The NYPD is using a new pattern recognition system to help solve crimes Posted: 10 Mar 2019 03:09 PM PDT The New York City Police Department is using a new software system called Patternizr, which helps officers search through "hundreds of thousands" of case files, according to a report in The Washington Post. The report says that the software was developed in house, and allows analysts to search across a wide range of files to look for patterns or similar crimes. Previously, they would have had to have gone through physical files. In one example, officers used the system to connect two crimes — a man who used a syringe to steal a drill in two different Home Depots in New York City. Rebecca Shutt, the crime analyst who solved the case explained to the Post that the system "brought back complaints from other precincts that I wouldn't have... |

Palmer Luckey’s company earned a contract for the Pentagon’s Project Maven AI program Posted: 10 Mar 2019 11:52 AM PDT Palmer Luckey's Anduril Industries has won a contract on the Pentagon's controversial AI program, Project Maven, reports The Intercept. Since founding the company in 2017, Luckey has focused on the defense industry, building advanced systems that could be used for border surveillance. Project Maven is a controversial artificial intelligence program that uses machine learning to sort through millions of hours of drone footage to help systems distinguish people from their surroundings. The project would help reduce the burden on human analysts and improve the intelligence that's captured in cameras. The project's goal is to get better information to military officers, with the idea that with better decisions, there's less of a change of... |
In season 2, American Gods has fallen on hard times Posted: 10 Mar 2019 11:41 AM PDT Spoiler warning: This review reveals major plot points from season 1 of American Gods, and lays out season 2 storylines. Neil Gaiman's 2007 novel American Gods tells the story of awesome, magical beings brought low by the loss of faith and the cold realities of the modern age. Now the same tragic fate has struck Starz's American Gods TV adaptation, which returned for season 2 on March 10th. Conflicts about the show's budget and adherence to Gaiman's story led showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green to leave after season 1, which led to the loss of standout cast members Gillian Anderson and Kristin Chenoweth. Gaiman chose Jesse Alexander to take over as showrunner, but he was "exiled" from the show last fall, and Starz still hasn't... |
Public Official A charts Rod Blagojevich’s spectacular fall from grace Posted: 10 Mar 2019 11:00 AM PDT Remember Rod Blagojevich? My memory of the former Illinois Governor is the coverage of his case from The Daily Show as Jon Stewart made a long-running gag of exaggerating his name. In 2008, Governor Blagojevich was arrested and charged with corruption after a long-running investigation, and was eventually impeached and removed from office. A new podcast from WBEZ Chicago, Public Official A, delves into the events that led to Blagojevich's removal from office, and why his name has been in the news lately. In the introduction, journalist Dave McKinney describes the show as "this is our podcast about the bringing down of a charismatic and non-conformist politician by a federal investigation," and if you aren't up to speed on Illinois... |
E-sports teams are flocking to Apex Legends Posted: 10 Mar 2019 10:00 AM PDT Apex Legends is the hottest game of the moment, skyrocketing to 50 million registered players in its first month of existence. Its combination of lightning-quick action and squad-focused gameplay has made it not only a popular game to play, but an exciting one to watch as well. Apex regularly dominates the Twitch charts, often topping mainstay Fortnite. So it's no surprise that Apex Legends is primed to become the next big e-sport. Over the last few weeks, established e-sports teams have been slowly assembling Apex Legends squads. The last week, in particular, has been a flurry of announcements. TSM, 100 Thieves, Gen.G, and NRG all added either entire Apex teams or individual players over the last few days. One of the more surprising... |
Facebook sues Ukrainian quiz-makers for stealing user data with malware plugins Posted: 10 Mar 2019 08:50 AM PDT Facebook has sued two Ukrainian men for allegedly using quiz apps to scrape Facebook users' private data and inject advertisements into their News Feeds. The lawsuit, filed Friday, accuses Gleb Sluchevsky and Andrey Gorbachov of running a years-long hacking scheme. Between 2017 and 2018, they enticed users to install malicious browser plugins promising horoscopes or "character and popularity" tests, apparently infecting around 63,000 Facebook users' browsers. Sluchevsky and Gorbachov allegedly operated four web apps including "Supertest" and "FQuiz," mostly targeting Russian and Ukrainian users. According to court filings, the apps offered personality quizzes like "Who are you of modern vampires?" (illustrated by a poster for Twilight)... |

Daylight saving time is hot garbage Posted: 10 Mar 2019 06:29 AM PDT This story was originally published on March 12th, 2016. It has been updated to include video, but it has not otherwise been edited as daylight saving time remains trash. When Benjamin Franklin proposed daylight saving time — he invented it — it was a joke. These days, it's more like a practical joke we play on ourselves every single year. It's time to end this dumb prank once and for all. |
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says ‘we should be excited about automation’ Posted: 10 Mar 2019 06:26 AM PDT New York congressional representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez believes that people should welcome robots taking their jobs — but not the economic system that can make it financially devastating. During a talk at SXSW, an audience member asked Ocasio-Cortez about the threat of automated labor. "We should not be haunted by the specter of being automated out of work," she said in response. "We should be excited by that. But the reason we're not excited by it is because we live in a society where if you don't have a job, you are left to die. And that is, at its core, our problem." The congresswoman referenced a proposal from Bill Gates, who has discussed a tax on robots that replace human workers. (While she stated that Gates suggested... |
