OpenAI’s Dota 2 AI steamrolls world champion e-sports team with back-to-back victories Posted: 13 Apr 2019 02:05 PM PDT OpenAI, the AI research organization, can claim a world first: its artificial intelligence system trained to play the complex strategy game Dota 2 has bested a world champion e-sports team. The competition was held in San Francisco today and dubbed the OpenAI Five Finals, ending the organization's public demonstrations of its Dota-playing technology on a high note. The competition on the human side included five top Dota 2 pros from team OG, which won the world's most coveted e-sports prize last year when it took the No. 1 spot at The International, the premiere annual Dota 2 tournament with prizes now totaling $25 million. OG faced off in a best-of-three contest against the OpenAI Five bots, all trained using the same deep... |

Amazon is selling a bundle of three Echo Dot speakers for just $70 Posted: 13 Apr 2019 09:50 AM PDT Amazon's running a pretty great deal right now that will let you buy three of its Alexa-enabled Echo Dot speakers for just $69.97. Each Dot individually costs $49.99, so you're saving $80 off the standard amount you'd pay for three. The Echo Dot frequently goes on sale, but even then, it would almost certainly cost more to get a trio. The offer is good for all three colors of the Echo Dot, so you can mix and match them as you please. Remember that the Dots can be stereo paired for wider, more immersive sound output in whatever room you put two of them in. But left all by itself, this latest hardware generation still sounds markedly improved compared to previous Dots and is enough to fill a bedroom or small living room. If you've got a... |
Twitch’s first-ever video game is a free karaoke title built for live streaming Posted: 13 Apr 2019 08:30 AM PDT Since becoming the de facto game streaming platform of the modern generation, Twitch is finally ready to design its own video games, starting with a karaoke title built specifically to take advantage of the Twitch platform. The news, announced this morning on the first day of TwitchCon Europe, marks the Amazon-owned live streaming platform's first-ever foray into game development. The game is called Twitch Sings and is available for free on Windows at sings.twitch.tv. Twitch started as a lifecasting platform, then shifted to one more oriented to game streaming, but it's also been a place to find experimental efforts that take advantage of the live nature of the platform, alongside its array of competitive shooters and other e-sports... |
Microsoft reveals hackers accessed some Outlook.com accounts for months Posted: 13 Apr 2019 08:13 AM PDT Microsoft has started notifying some Outlook.com users that a hacker was able to access accounts for months earlier this year. The software giant discovered that a support agent's credentials were compromised for its web mail service, allowing unauthorized access to some accounts between January 1st and March 28th, 2019. Microsoft says the hackers could have viewed account email addresses, folder names, and subject lines of emails, but not the content of emails or attachments. It's not clear how many users have been affected by the breach, or who was involved in obtaining access to Outlook.com email accounts. "Our data indicates that account-related information (but not the content of any e-mails) could have been viewed, but Microsoft... |
World’s biggest airplane takes flight for the first time ever Posted: 13 Apr 2019 07:31 AM PDT The world's largest airplane took flight for the first time ever on Saturday morning. Built by rocket launch company Stratolaunch, the 500,000-pound plane with a 385-foot wingspan lifted off shortly after 10AM ET from Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, California. It was a critical first test flight for the aircraft, designed to launch rockets into orbit from the air. The inaugural flight lasted for 150 minutes, according to the company, after which the plane safely landed. The dual-fuselage Stratolaunch is designed to fly to an altitude of 35,000 feet, where it can drop rockets that ignite their engines and boost themselves into orbit around the planet. There is no rocket on this particular flight. But the company has already signed... |
Four theories about Julian Assange’s cat Posted: 13 Apr 2019 07:00 AM PDT Thursday's arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has provoked complicated reactions. There's one place, however, where everyone seems to agree: we really hope his cat is doing okay. "Embassy Cat," as the feline is known on Twitter and Instagram, is undoubtedly a PR play from WikiLeaks. According to one New Yorker profile, Assange made up a story about getting the cat from his children, and the organization sells an array of Embassy Cat mugs, shirts, and stickers. But the fact remains that Embassy Cat is adorable (it wears little ties!), and several Verge reporters are deeply invested in its well-being. Unfortunately, a bevy of major news outlets have been unable to confirm that cat's precise location, and multiple, credible sources... |
Online trolls are harassing a scientist who helped take the first picture of a black hole Posted: 13 Apr 2019 05:00 AM PDT It's so easy to be excited about Katie Bouman. She's the 29-year-old computer scientist whose utter glee at seeing a black hole for the first time was captured in a picture that warmed hearts around the world.
Bouman, soon to be an assistant professor at Caltech, led one of the four teams tasked with turning data on half a ton of hard drives into the picture that ricocheted around the world on Wednesday. Even with a picture right there on our screens, actually understanding something larger than our solar... |
