These Chinese sanitation workers have to wear location-tracking bracelets now Posted: 06 Apr 2019 04:33 PM PDT China has quite the reputation for monitoring its citizens, and it feels like various parts of the country are constantly figuring out new ways to use gadgets to that end — RFID chips in cars, facial recognition sunglasses, and location-tracking uniforms for students each made headlines in the past year. Now, you can add sanitation workers with GPS-equipped tracking bracelets to the list. On April 3rd, news broke that sanitation workers in Nanjing, China's Hexi district were being required to wear GPS-tracking smart bracelets to not only monitor their location at all times, but audibly prod them if they stopped moving for more than 20 minutes. Just one day later, the South China Morning... |
Our second-favorite universal remote just hit its lowest price ever, plus smart bulb sales Posted: 06 Apr 2019 01:52 PM PDT The Logitech Harmony 650 has been our runner-up pick for the best universal remote control; at its typical $40-50 street price, we considered it the budget alternative to the far pricier Harmony Elite. But today, it's not $40 or $50. The 8-device infrared remote is $25 at Best Buy, the lowest price we've ever seen. (We've seen it hit $30, but rarely.) If you're in the market for some smart light bulbs, I also have to admit I'm tempted by this 2-pack of TP-Link's Kasa KL130 multicolor bulbs for $42.98 at Newegg, a considerable savings when even a single bulb can cost $30 when they're on sale. Plus, Amazon's deal of the day today includes a bunch of (refurbished) Philips Hue bulb kits for 25 percent off — though you should probably check... |
Here’s the US Army version of HoloLens that Microsoft employees were protesting Posted: 06 Apr 2019 12:59 PM PDT In November, we learned that Microsoft won a $479 million contract to supply the US Army with a version of its HoloLens augmented reality headset — a move that Microsoft's own employees decried this February, prompting Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella himself to respond. Now, for the first time, we're seeing what those hundreds of millions of dollars actually bought. CNBC got an exclusive look at an early draft of the Army's Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS), which turns out to be a modified version of the new HoloLens 2 for soldiers. Physically, it looks almost identical to the commercial headset — save the new FLIR thermal camera prominently mounted above a user's forehead. But it's what's inside the glasses that counts, and C... |
Netflix confirms it killed AirPlay support, won’t let you beam shows to Apple TVs anymore Posted: 06 Apr 2019 10:30 AM PDT With no warning and little explanation, Netflix has removed the easiest way to sling its shows from one Apple device to another: AirPlay. Netflix confirmed to The Verge that it pulled the wireless casting feature this past week, due to what it's calling a "technical limitation." But it's not the kind of technical limitation you'd think. You see, Apple recently partnered with most of the major TV brands to allow AirPlay 2 to send shows directly to their 2019 TV sets with a firmware update later this year, but a Netflix spokeperson tells me AirPlay 2 doesn't have digital identifiers to let Netflix tell those TVs apart — and so the company can't certify its users are getting the best Netflix experience when casting to those new sets. So... |
11 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 06 Apr 2019 09:00 AM PDT I watched First Reformed last weekend, and I still don't know quite what to think. The film, which comes from Taxi Driver writer Paul Schrader, stars Ethan Hawke as a minister who slowly starts to see darkness in the world — global warming, capitalism, political indifference — and gets sucked toward the extremes he had once been warning against. The film does a masterful job twisting its minister from a quiet, lost character to one who's driven and obsessed. It feels real, and it's an excellent portrait of how someone could shift their point of view so far and so intensely. But, like Taxi Driver, I also don't know how much I enjoy watching a story that lets us see into how the heart of man (men, specifically) becomes twisted. I sort of... |
Refurbished Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL phones are cheaper this weekend Posted: 06 Apr 2019 08:40 AM PDT There are quite a few deals to check out this weekend, some of which are exclusive to readers of The Verge. Starting with arguably the best deal that we've come across this week: Daily Steals is offering readers an exclusive discount on refurbished Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL phones. The Pixel 3, the smaller of the two, usually starts at $799 brand-new, while the Pixel 3 XL starts at $899, but these refurbished models are over $300 off of their normal prices. The Pixel 3 with 64GB of storage will only cost $462.99 with the offer code THEVERGE3. You can pick between black, white, or pink. If you want a bigger phone that has more screen real estate, the Pixel 3 XL in black with 128GB of storage is $569.99 with the offer code T... |
Smart glasses company North announces new, essential features for Focals Posted: 06 Apr 2019 07:30 AM PDT North, the company behind the Focals smart glasses, announced this week that it's updating its glasses to add new, much-needed functionality. Of most interest to me, and as I noted as a feature I'd like to see in my prior review, the company added support for Spotify controls. Users will be able to skip songs, see a track's title/artist, and adjust the volume of their connected listening device from the glasses' accompanying control ring, called the Loop. The company's also rolling out direction updates that will provide steps to take for transit, as well as delays. Users can also share their ETAs with contacts. Up until now, Focals could only provide walking directions or the ability to call an Uber. It doesn't provide driving... |
The Hidizs Sonata HD is the best USB-C audio dongle Posted: 06 Apr 2019 06:09 AM PDT One of the frustrations of my job is the difficulty of convincingly communicating differences in sound quality. If I want to inform you of a great new camera, such as the Huawei P30 Pro's low-light heroics, I can post side-by-side photos and demonstrate exactly how much of an upgrade the latest tech is. A great new display can also be photographed to show off its strengths. New video game with awesome graphics? More visual evidence can be provided. But if I want to tell you about an amazing pair of headphones, all I have is words. So I suppose you'll have to just trust me when I say that a $28 USB-C audio dongle by an obscure company called Hidizs is the best you can buy. It's 2019 and the issue of headphone dongles is very much still... |
Google Assistant’s worst feature is still having to say ‘Hey Google’ Posted: 06 Apr 2019 06:00 AM PDT Recently, a few of us at The Verge who use Google Assistant devices in our homes started complaining about the whole "Hey Google / OK Google" thing. We all had the same experience: you'd say something like, "Hey Google, set a timer for 12 minutes," and the expected "Timer set" response would come from a device somewhere else in the house. In my home, we have that problem all the time. We have three Google Assistant devices (not including our phones), and I can't count how many times we'd be sitting in the living room, would say, "Hey Google, play The Great British Baking Show from Netflix," and somewhere above my head, in the second floor bedroom, a voice would explain that it can't do that. What is the issue here? Apparently, the voice... |
Google’s own website just confirmed the Pixel 3a Posted: 05 Apr 2019 08:02 PM PDT For the second time in two weeks, Google's website has seemingly confirmed the name of a new product — in this case, the long-rumored upcoming "lite" version of the company's Pixel 3. It looks like the new phone will officially be called the "Pixel 3a," according to screenshots we just captured of this Google Store page: While Google has already taken down the page showing the "new" phone, the damage (if you can call additional hype for a thoroughly leaked product "damage") appears to be done. In fact, 9to5Google reports that the website also displayed references to the previously-leaked Nest Hub Max, as well as a Nest Hub, before it was taken down. (In our case, thanks go to astute Verge reader Aadithya G. who pointed us... |
