The US military doesn’t know how many websites it runs

Posted: 10 May 2019 01:06 PM PDT

The Department of Defense isn't sure how many websites it runs. Stars and Stripes reports that at an event last month, US Army Colonel Paul Haverstick, the acting director of the Defense Media Activity at Fort Meade, Maryland said that the number of websites that the Pentagon runs is "undefined."

The Defense Media Activity is the US military's multimedia outreach operation, covering the publication of official outlets, such as Army News, Air Force News, Marines News, and Navy News, and communications education for military and civilians. It also provides hosting and web development for the Department of Defense.

But it seems that there's no official tally of all of the websites that it's responsible for. The DMA's website says that it...

Game of Thrones Hope Chest: underserved and absent characters

Posted: 10 May 2019 01:05 PM PDT

Game of Thrones has never been about giving readers or viewers what they most want. Its author and screenwriters prefer to build fan expectations, then overturn them for narrative impact and, sometimes, pure shock value. Yet, fans maintain hope that at least a few of the characters will reach a satisfying, well-deserved ending. So it's time for the return of Game of Thrones Hope Chest, the weekly poll where we put all of our hopes together in one place. We aren't asking what you think is going to happen on Game of Thrones. We're asking: what do you most hope to see happen?

The last few episodes of Game of Thrones have kicked up a lot of fuss, from viewers and critics upset about everything from Daenerys Targaryen's bad scouting strategy...

Refurbished iPhones are 10 percent off at Back Market for Verge readers

Posted: 10 May 2019 12:48 PM PDT

Back Market, a marketplace for refurbished tech, is offering Verge readers a chance to save 10 percent on any of its refurbished products, including iPhones, laptops, drones, and more. Once you find what you've been looking for, enter the code BMVERGE at the "confirm and pay" screen to knock a few dollars off of your total cost. This deal is active until Mother's Day comes to an end in the US on Sunday, May 12th.

The site doesn't currently have many recent Android phones in stock, though you'll find all of the latest iPhones here. For example, the iPhone XS with 64GB is currently $806, though you'll save a little more once the discount code is applied. The iPhone XR is available in several colors for about $100 off of its usual $749...

Elon Musk is going to trial for calling a cave diver a pedophile on Twitter

Posted: 10 May 2019 12:12 PM PDT

A defamation case involving Tesla CEO Elon Musk and a British cave diver will go to trial on October 22nd, according to recent court filings. Vernon Unsworth sued Musk for defamation last year after Musk repeatedly accused Unsworth of being a pedophile. A judge rejected Musk's claim that he wasn't making a real accusation — in part because of a potentially damning email Musk sent to BuzzFeed. "A reasonable fact-finder could easily conclude that [Elon Musk's] statements ... implied assertions of objective fact," wrote district judge Stephen V. Wilson.

Musk and Unsworth got into a brief feud last year following the rescue of a soccer team that was trapped in a cave in Thailand. Unsworth, who helped with the rescue operation, criticized...

Justice Department charges Chinese hacking group for Anthem breach

Posted: 10 May 2019 11:38 AM PDT

On Thursday, the Justice Department charged a Chinese hacking group with carrying out one of the largest criminal hacks in United States health care history that resulted in 79 million people having their personal information stolen.

In the four-count indictment cited by the Justice Department, officials allege Wang Fujie, 32, and another man referred to only as John Doe intruded US computer systems, including Anthem, a health insurance giant, and three other businesses between February 2014 and January 2015.

"The defendants used sophisticated techniques to hack into the computer networks of the victim businesses without authorization," and "then installed malware and tools on the compromised computer systems to further compromise the...

Zach Lieberman’s interactive art creates moments of wonder and surprise

Posted: 10 May 2019 11:00 AM PDT

Zach Lieberman is an extremely busy person. He's a designer, computer programmer, educator, and artist (he's also one of my biggest inspirations). Among other things, he's one of the creators of openFrameworks, an open-source C++ library that is one of the coolest ways to dive into making striking visuals with code. A lot of his work is interactive and playful in unexpected ways — which just so happens to be one of his goals.

Recently Lieberman has been teaching at the School for Poetic Computation and continuing to experiment. He had an installation at Frieze Fair and spoke at the 11th annual Adobe 99U Conference this past week. I reached out to him to learn more about his process, motivations, and thoughts on AR.

This interview has...

Amazon Prime’s one-day shipping is already rolling out

Posted: 10 May 2019 10:59 AM PDT

Last month, Amazon revealed that it would be working to cut its free Prime shipping in half from two days down to one, and it appears the company has already started rolling out the feature in some areas, as spotted by SlickDeals.

The Verge has been able to confirm the new option showing up on various Prime items (as pictured below), with a new "Prime FREE One-Day" label replacing the usual two-day promise. The new one-day shipping times appear to be rolling out slowly — my account, for example, still promises two-day shipping, while my colleague Dan Seifert's is already offering him the free one-day option.

While Amazon has offered free one-day and same-day shipping for Prime customers before, it's been limited in the...

Marvel is adding the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer as Avengers: Endgame’s post-credits scene

Posted: 10 May 2019 10:37 AM PDT

Avengers: Endgame didn't have a post-credits scene when it was first released, but that's about to change — screenings will now come with the second trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home attached after the credits.

The new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, which is so full of Endgame spoilers that it came with its own spoiler warning, dropped earlier this week. Now, Endgame screenings will feature a message from Spider-Man actor Tom Holland suggesting audiences should hang around for a look at the trailer after the credits finish rolling on Endgame, according to Deadline. This is the first time since Endgame hit theaters on April 26th that a post-credits trailer will be featured.

Although adding a full-length trailer to a Marvel movie...

Detective Pikachu is the perfect reminder to revisit Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Posted: 10 May 2019 10:19 AM PDT

There are so many streaming options available these days, and so many conflicting recommendations, that it's hard to see through all the crap you could be watching. Each Friday, The Verge's Cut the Crap column simplifies the choice by sorting through the overwhelming multitude of movies and TV shows on subscription services and recommending a single perfect thing to watch this weekend.

What to Watch

Who Framed Roger Rabbit, a film noir set in an alternate version of Golden Age Hollywood in which animated characters, or "Toons," share the town with their human counterparts — sometimes with murderous consequences.

Adapting Gary K. Wolf's 1981 novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit? was never going to be easy. It's one thing to use words to create...
