The IFPI has marked piracy as a threat to the music industry for a number of years. Its 2018 Music Consumer Insight Report said that 38 percent of people globally... |
DC is shutting down Vertigo label, will brand comics by age-appropriateness Posted: 21 Jun 2019 03:17 PM PDT DC will shut down three major imprints in January 2020, including Vertigo, Zoom, and Ink amidst a reorganization. They will be replaced by a new branding scheme that sorts comics into age groups for younger and older readers called DC Kids, DC, and DC Black Label. DC created its Vertigo imprint as a way for the publisher to explore more mature themes, and included ongoing titles such as DMZ, Hellblazer, iZombie, Lucifer, Preacher, The Sandman, Swamp Thing, Y: The Last Man, and standalone graphic novels. Those titles brought considerable critical acclaim. In 2012, DC announced that founder Karen Berger would leave the company, and in 2018, DC Comics "relaunched" Vertigo as DC Vertigo, along with a number of new titles, which would be... |
Apple might put OLEDs in laptops and tablets to make up for slowing iPhone sales Posted: 21 Jun 2019 02:43 PM PDT Apple may use high-end OLED screens in more of its devices, not necessarily just because it wants to, but also because it may satisfy a penalty it supposedly owes to its OLED supplier, Samsung Display — after reportedly failing to buy enough iPhone screens to make good on its contract. According to a report from ETnews, this repayment might even see Samsung's OLED screens appearing in Apple products that have never featured them before, including notebooks and tablets (via AppleInsider). That's merely what industry sources say Apple and Samsung may be considering as one of their many options to settle the dispute, so it's far too early to say if that will happen — but it could make sense. Apple uses the vibrant high-end screens as a... |
FedEx refused to deliver a Huawei phone into the US Posted: 21 Jun 2019 02:21 PM PDT If you were planning to ship a Huawei phone to America, you might be in for a surprise. This week, writers at PC Magazine tried to ship a Huawei P30 from a UK office to a US one, and were surprised to find it sent back a few days later. Since the sender had identified the phone down to the IMEI number, it was clear from the beginning that box contained a Huawei phone, but the package was actually shipped all the way from London to Indianapolis — from the UK's Parcelforce to its US partner FedEx — until a legal issue emerged and the shipment was returned to the UK. According to the attached notice, the problem was a "US government issue with Huawei and China government."

The US Air Force has a new weapon called THOR that can take out swarms of drones Posted: 21 Jun 2019 01:37 PM PDT In recent years, small drones have made their way onto battlefields where they've been used to surveil US forces or drop bombs on them, prompting the US military to develop new ways to take them down. This week, the US Air Force unveiled a new tool that can be stationed at bases around the world: a high-powered microwave system called Tactical High Power Microwave Operational Responder (THOR), which is designed to protect bases against swarms of drones. The Air Force Research Laboratory at the Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, developed the system, which uses short bursts of high-powered microwaves to disable unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). According to local TV station KRQE, the system was developed quickly (18... |
Nashville is banning electric scooters after a man was killed Posted: 21 Jun 2019 01:29 PM PDT Nashville is banishing the scooters after its first scooter-related death. The city's mayor David Briley notified seven scooter companies operating in Nashville he was ending the pilot project and banning electric scooters from the streets, according to a letter he posted to Twitter Friday. "We have seen the public safety and accessibility costs that these devices inflict, and it is not fair to our residents for this to continue," Briley writes. "If these devices return in the future, it will be after a public process, on our terms, with strict oversight for numbers, safety, and accessibility."

Facebook says it’s taking new steps to stop hate speech in Sri Lanka and Myanmar Posted: 21 Jun 2019 12:09 PM PDT As Facebook deals with global criticism for its platform's role in promoting violence, the company says it's taking new steps to slow the spread of hate. In a blog post published yesterday, the company noted action it's recently taken in two countries: Sri Lanka and Myanmar, both of which have been hit by social media-fueled conflict. In Sri Lanka, where posts on Facebook have spread anti-Muslim violence, the company says it's limiting the number of messages that users can forward — a change the company previously made to WhatsApp amid similar concerns. The number of threads that can be forwarded at once is reportedly set at five in the country. The company said it is also focusing on... |
Dell software designed to protect you from vulnerabilities has another vulnerability Posted: 21 Jun 2019 11:28 AM PDT Dell's SupportAssist software, a Windows toolkit designed in part to protect your computer from security vulnerabilities, has yet another vulnerability of its own that makes running older versions of the software a risk to your system. As noted by Gizmodo this morning, this new vulnerability was discovered by security researchers at SafeBreach and disclosed on Monday in a public blog post. Dell has now issued an update to patch it that you should download now. A serious concern here is that this vulnerability doesn't just affect Dell machines with SupportAssist, as was the case with an entirely separate SupportAssist vulnerability from two months ago. This time, it can affect other laptop manufacturers that are also, like Dell, using... |
YouTube can’t remove kid videos without tearing a hole in the entire creator ecosystem Posted: 21 Jun 2019 10:31 AM PDT As a federal investigation into YouTube's problems with children enters its late stages, the platform needs a solution. But as YouTube struggles to find a fix that addresses policymakers' concerns, it's left with a major roadblock: children have become integral to the overarching creator community. Whether it's six-year-olds reviewing toys and landing on YouTube's Trending page, kids' reaction videos attracting millions of views, or top-tier vloggers teaming up with four-year-olds to create more family-centric content, the platform has become a destination for videos starring kids. In 2017, Time magazine reported being told by YouTube that "time spent watching family vloggers is up 90 percent in the past year." Melissa Hunter, a... |
