Apple’s top spec Mac Pro will likely cost at least $35,000

Posted: 03 Jun 2019 05:03 PM PDT

Apple announced today that its new Mac Pro starts at an already pricey $6,000, but the company neglected to mention how much the top-of-the-line model will cost. So we shopped around for equivalent parts to the top-end spec that Apple's promising. As it turns out: $33,720.88 is likely the bare minimum — and that's before factoring in the four GPUs, which could easily jack that price up to around $45,000.

For all that dough, big-budget video editors and other creative types get a lot of firepower: a 28-core Intel Xeon W processor, an almost-impossible-to-comprehend 1.5TB of RAM, 4TB of SSD storage, and four AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo GPUs — assuming you can afford one.

Add in a Pro Display XDR monitor (and a Pro Stand to go with it), and...

Apple’s Real User Indicator will tell developers when a new account may actually be a bot

Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:45 PM PDT

Apple says it's building a new tool it calls Real User Indicator that could cut down on the number of bots secretly signing up for new accounts with mobile, desktop, and web services.

The feature, announced during the company's Platforms State of the Union event at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), is designed to check for traits more consistent with bots than people. It then informs an app developer of the situation, so the developer can then take further action to verify the authenticity of the new account.

"It uses on-device intelligence to determine if the originating device is behaving in a normal way. The device generates a value without sending any specifics to Apple," an Apple spokesperson explained onstage during the...

Apple is building a major defense against spam calls into iOS 13

Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:20 PM PDT

Apple is taking a new step to combat spam calls in iOS 13. Today, you can already install third-party spam call screeners on your iPhone, but if that's not good enough (or something you don't want to do), iOS 13 will add a new solution this fall: it will be able to automatically silence any calls coming in from an unknown number. Even better, it'll automatically send them to voicemail.

The new "silence unknown callers" option can be toggled on or off based on your preference, but I'm thinking most people will enable it right after updating and leave it that way. The feature is explained on this page of what's new in iOS 13.

So many of the spam calls we're bombarded with on a daily basis are spoofed to look like a local number. But...

Apple will force iOS developers to use its new Apple ID sign in option

Posted: 03 Jun 2019 04:14 PM PDT

Single sign-in can be super convenient — instead of creating a new username and password for each app and website you visit, just press a button to log in with your Google or Facebook account instead. And today, Apple announced its own, potentially even more attractive single sign-in scheme: one that doesn't turn data about your logins into fodder for your Facebook and Google advertising profiles.

But Apple doesn't seem to be content just selling its single sign-on as a convenient, pro-privacy option. As iOS developer Ben Sandofsky spotted today, the company has unilaterally decided that if any app offers Google, Facebook, or other third-party sign-in options, it'll need to offer Apple's sign-in too.

House lawmakers launch antitrust investigation into Big Tech

Posted: 03 Jun 2019 02:47 PM PDT

The House Judiciary Committee is launching an investigation into giant tech companies like Facebook and Google to determine whether they are abusing their market dominance and violating antitrust law.

"The open internet has delivered enormous benefits to Americans, including a surge of economic opportunity, massive investment, and new pathways for education online," Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) said in a statement. "But there is growing evidence that a handful of gatekeepers have come to capture control over key arteries of online commerce, content, and communications."

The investigation comes amid growing tensions between regulators and Silicon Valley. Over the past few days, reports surfaced that the Federal Trade...

Watch Apple’s Mac Pro video featuring Jony Ive that wasn’t shown at WWDC

Posted: 03 Jun 2019 02:24 PM PDT

I was a little surprised when Apple unveiled its redesigned Mac Pro earlier today without a flashy introduction video featuring the familiar voice of chief design officer Jony Ive. However, the company did produce one. It just wasn't part of the keynote for some reason — presumably, it was either cut for time or because Apple thought hardware engineering VP John Ternus could handle the product reveal just fine on his own.

But if you want to hear Ive go on at length about the new $5,999 Mac "designed and engineered to enable a wide range of uses and virtually unlimited possibilities for customization," well, here you go. "Our preoccupation with utility and function defines the design of Mac Pro," Ive says in the clip.

The video is...

Apple’s new iPadOS includes mouse support for iPads

Posted: 03 Jun 2019 02:23 PM PDT

Apple is making a huge change to its new iPadOS, introducing mouse support for both USB and Bluetooth devices. iOS developer Steve Troughton-Smith discovered the new mouse support in iPadOS today, and it reportedly works with USB mice, devices like Apple's Magic Trackpad, and wireless Bluetooth mice.

Apple adding mouse support to iPadOS is significant, even though it's an accessibility feature for now. Apple has implemented this support as an AssistiveTouch feature, and the cursor looks like a typical touch target you'd find in iOS. It's designed to simulate a finger touch, so you can use a mouse to do this instead. Many iPad owners have been asking for some type of cursor support for years, and this could be the start of Apple...

Apple’s new Mac Pro vs. the iMac Pro: Is it worth upgrading?

Posted: 03 Jun 2019 02:22 PM PDT

Modularity is the word of the day as far as Apple's newly announced and redesigned Mac Pro is concerned. The computer features a return to the older "cheese-grater" look, but redesigned and with a strong eye toward flexibility and expansion.

The question for owners of the most recent desktop Mac powerhouse, the iMac Pro, will be: Should I abandon my current system for the new Mac Pro, which will start at $5,999? (The iMac Pro starts at $4,999, but includes a 27-inch 5K display.) We took a look at the specs of the current iMac Pro, which launched back in December of 2017, and what was announced today for the new Mac Pro, which will ship this fall.

The rise and fall of iTunes, Apple’s most hated app

Posted: 03 Jun 2019 01:59 PM PDT

It was a long run for iTunes, the jukebox software that revolutionized the music industry after its launch in 2001. But now, in the year 2019, it's finally being put out of its misery — and ours.

With macOS 10.15 Catalina, the primary functions of iTunes will be spun out into separate Music, TV, and Podcasts apps, bringing an end to the program's two decades of dominance within the Apple software and hardware ecosystem. Syncing your devices will now be handled by the Finder application, which can backup, update, or restore your device directly from its sidebar. (Though it'll be gone on the Mac, iTunes will reportedly survive on Windows for the time being.)

Few will mourn the...

Apple’s $1,000 Pro Display XDR stand is the most expensive dongle ever

Posted: 03 Jun 2019 01:55 PM PDT

Apple just announced its latest pro-level monitor: the $4,999 6K Pro Display XDR. According to Apple's official technical spec page for the Pro Display XDR, included in the box with the new $4,999 monitor will be a power cord, a Thunderbolt 3 Pro cable, and a polishing cloth. Conspicuously missing is any form of a stand.

While Apple announced onstage that the nifty magnetically attached Pro Stand — which allows the screen to tilt, angle, and even rotate from landscape to portrait modes — would be sold separately for an extra $999, the company didn't mention that it (along with the $199 VESA mount adapter, which will require you to buy another third-party stand) are the only stand options for the Pro Display XDR. Despite...
