Samsung teases Galaxy Note 10 event on August 7th Posted: 01 Jul 2019 06:00 PM PDT Samsung has announced its latest Unpacked event for August 7th at 4PM ET at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, NY, where the company will be announcing the Galaxy Note 10, the latest in its line of super-sized stylus-equipped smartphones. There's not a ton to go by from the invite: just a picture of an S Pen and a single camera lens (which could be forming an exclamation point, if you squint at it really hard). The latest leaks do give a bit more to go by, with rumors of a fresh design for the Note 10 that will feature a single front-facing camera embedded in the display (similar to the Galaxy S10 earlier this year), although the Note 10 will allegedly be putting that camera dead center on the screen. |
Dr Disrespect breaks character to apologize over Twitch ban incident Posted: 01 Jul 2019 03:56 PM PDT Guy Beahm, who streams on Twitch as the popular character "Dr Disrespect," has broken his silence on the controversial live stream incident during the E3 expo in Los Angeles early last month that resulted in a multi-week ban from the platform. Breaking character in rare fashion, Beahm posted a note to his dormant Twitter account in the form of a Twitlonger post, the first tweet from the account since November 2017. In the post, Beahm apologizes for his actions and offers some insight into why the incident, in which he and his cameraman filmed live in a men's bathroom, took place. "When we were walking around filming at E3, we clearly weren't thinking about the laws/repercussions of filming in the bathroom because honestly, it wasn't in... |
Apple CEO Tim Cook says report on tensions with Jony Ive is ‘absurd’ Posted: 01 Jul 2019 02:33 PM PDT Apple CEO Tim Cook has fired back at a recent Wall Street Journal article that reported on tensions between departing chief design officer Jony Ive and the company, calling the story "absurd" and claiming that "the conclusions just don't match with reality" in an email sent to NBC News reporter Dylan Byers. The WSJ report alleged that Ive's departure from the company had been a long time coming, claiming that Ive has been slowly drifting away from the company in recent years, leaving the design team at Apple rudderless and without leadership. A similar report was published at Bloomberg last week in the wake of Ive's announcement, although Cook has yet to offer a rebuttal there. Cook's email instead notes that the design team at Apple is... |
Virginia’s ‘revenge porn’ laws now officially cover deepfakes Posted: 01 Jul 2019 01:46 PM PDT Virginia has officially expanded its nonconsensual pornography ban to include realistic fake videos and photos, including computer-generated "deepfakes." The amendment was passed earlier this year and goes into effect today, making Virginia one of the first places with a law covering deepfakes. Since 2014, Virginia has banned spreading nude images or video "with the intent to coerce, harass, or intimidate" another person. The amendment clarifies that this includes "a falsely created videographic or still image" — which could refer to "deepfakes" video but also Photoshopped images or otherwise faked footage. Violating the rule is a Class 1 misdemeanor, which carries up to 12 months in prison and up to $2,500 in fines. "Deepfakes" — a term... |
Some Facebook Menlo Park buildings evacuated after possible sarin exposure in mailing facility Posted: 01 Jul 2019 01:19 PM PDT Several buildings at Facebook's Menlo Park campus have been evacuated after a machine at the company's mailing facility alerted employees that a package may contain sarin, a potentially deadly nerve agent, as first reported by NBC Bay Area. According to that report, no one has been exposed to the substance, whatever it may be. "We evacuated four buildings and are conducting a thorough investigation in coordination with local authorities," Anthony Harrison, a Facebook spokesperson told The Verge. "As of now, three buildings have been cleared for repopulation. The safety of our employees is our top priority and we will share additional information when it is available." Facebook routinely tests packages sent through its mailing facility... |
Sony raises PlayStation Vue prices by $5 a month across all tiers Posted: 01 Jul 2019 12:09 PM PDT Every PlayStation Vue subscriber will see a $5-per-month price increase, Sony announced today. New subscribers to Sony's over-the-top TV service will see higher costs across all pricing tiers, meaning basic plans will rise from $45 to $50 per month. Current subscribers will start paying the higher price after July 31st. The increase comes from a recent review of what competitors are charging for content, changes in the ecosystem, and the number of services offered, according to Sony's blog post on the announcement. PlayStation Vue isn't the only live TV streaming package that's getting an increase: YouTube TV, which offers similar paid TV packages with a bundle of channels, raised its monthly fee to $50 a month (or $55 a month for those... |
40 years ago, the Sony Walkman changed how we listen to music Posted: 01 Jul 2019 12:03 PM PDT The world changed on July 1st, 1979: the day that Sony released the iconic Walkman TPS-L2, the first real portable music player that would revolutionize the way we listened to music in a way that no other device really had ever done before. Boomboxes and portable radios had been around for a while, but the Walkman made portable music private, ushering in a whole new era of people listening to music away from home. Forty years later and Walkmans aren't exactly popular to use anymore (outside of things like Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy films, anyway), but the sea change that the Walkman caused in our lives is more apparent than ever. We don't use cassettes or CDs anymore. Nearly every mobile device we carry... |
12 new science fiction and fantasy books to check out this July Posted: 01 Jul 2019 10:48 AM PDT My colleague Chaim Gartenberg recently reviewed Sarah Gailey's debut novel Magic for Liars, prompting me to bump it further up my to-read list. I'm already a sucker for books about magical schools, and it's a spectacular read, following a tough-as-nails PI who is hired to investigate a brutal murder at The Osthorne Academy of Young Mages, where her estranged, magical twin sister works. What impressed me most was how Gailey plays with all of the conventions of a magical academy story while demonstrating that teenagers — magical or not — will be teenagers, and that the problems that they face and create are deeply rooted in some very human tendencies. It's a stellar mystery, and it makes a perfect read for a summer afternoon. Here are 12... |

Samsung CEO says he pushed Galaxy Fold launch ‘before it was ready’ Posted: 01 Jul 2019 10:23 AM PDT Samsung co-CEO DJ Koh says he pushed the Galaxy Fold to market "before it was ready," leading to the device's delay just days before it was supposed to ship out to customers. "It was embarrassing," Koh told a small group of reporters, according to The Independent. The Galaxy Fold, which would have been the first major release of a foldable smartphone, was supposed to come out in late April. But as reviewers started testing the phone in the weeks prior, several noticed that the screen could be easily destroyed, either by debris slipping in or by user error. The phone has been delayed since then. Samsung has promised that the phone will still come out, but it has yet to announce a new release date. The... |
