Trump’s vehicle emissions rollback is dicey, so he’s lowering the fine for guzzling gas Posted: 15 Jul 2019 03:37 PM PDT President Trump's administration has fought to roll back Obama-era vehicle emissions standards since his inauguration, and a final version of the looser rules is expected to be revealed later this summer. But since the rollback faces a number of obstacles — likely including a long, drawn-out battle in the court system that could ultimately kneecap the effort — the administration has found another way to discourage automakers from increasing the fuel efficiency of their vehicles: lower the fines for missing the targets. News dropped late Friday night that Trump wants the fines to revert back so that automakers only pay $5.50 for every tenth of a mile per gallon of fuel above federal standards that new cars consume — a price set in 1997,... |
This $25 Nintendo Switch controller supports in-game Fortnite chat with a headphone jack Posted: 15 Jul 2019 03:36 PM PDT The Nintendo Switch is a bit lacking in the accessory market, and that means a lot of the deficiencies that came baked into the first-generation version of the product aren't really getting addressed in a timely fashion. We're talking features like Bluetooth headphone support and, in the case of controllers, something as simple as a 3.5mm audio jack. Thankfully, we're starting to see the Switch's third-party ecosystem become more robust, and a new product from peripheral maker PDP seeks to address that audio problem head on. The company, which makes a wide-ranging set of low-cost gaming accessories, has a new gamepad called the Faceoff Deluxe Plus for the Switch that comes with a 3.5mm jack built in. It's a wired controller, so it's... |

Prices have fallen for countless products, including tech, and you'll be able to shop the deals for another day, until 2:59AM ET / 11:59PM PT on Tuesday, July 16th. First things first: to get in on the deals, you need to be an Amazon Prime subscriber. You can get started with a free 30-day trial to the service, then either let it auto-renew, or cancel it once the trial comes to an end. Following the cadence set in years past, Amazon will be rolling out new Spotlight Deals and Lightning Deals throughout Prime Day(s). So, while some of the savings will last throughout the two-day period, others will come and go in a matter of hours — or less. Now that day one of Prime Day 2019... |
SpaceX finally reveals cause of April spacecraft explosion Posted: 15 Jul 2019 02:40 PM PDT SpaceX says it has figured out what caused one of its spacecraft to explode during a ground test in April. A valve accidentally leaked some of the vehicle's propellant, starting a chain reaction that caused the spacecraft to burst apart. Now that the cause has been identified, SpaceX says it is replacing these parts in all future versions of the vehicle to make sure this explosive leak doesn't happen again. The spacecraft that SpaceX lost was a test version of the company's Crew Dragon, a capsule that's being built for NASA to take astronauts to and from the International Space Station. This particular capsule was the very first Crew Dragon that SpaceX had ever launched into space. In March, the vehicle — without a crew — successfully... |
Zoom’s video conferencing security flaw also applies to RingCentral and Zhumu Posted: 15 Jul 2019 02:36 PM PDT As Buzzfeed reports, security researcher Karan Lyons published evidence of yet more video conferencing apps that could be maliciously opened with their cameras turned on due to a security flaw. The apps this time are RingCentral and a Chinese app called Zhumu. If you are a Mac user that has ever installed either app and then visited a malicious website, it would be possible for code embedded in an iframe to automatically open up a video conference that turns your webcam on. Both actually use Zoom's technology behind the scenes — they're essentially white labels — and so the same issues that afflicted Zoom also affect them. If you are a user of RingCentral, you should update your app ASAP, as the latest patch includes a fix for this... |
Microsoft pulls Windows 10 May update from some Surface Book 2 devices over GPU issues Posted: 15 Jul 2019 02:01 PM PDT Microsoft is putting a compatibility hold on its Windows 10 May 2019 update for some of its Surface Book 2 laptops due to an issue where the discrete Nvidia GPU can vanish from the device manager on the OS, which in turn can cause apps or games that rely on that GPU to have issues, via ZDNet. The problem affects a small subset of Surface Book 2 devices — only high-end models with discrete Nvidia GPUs — but it is all the more notable for occurring on Microsoft's own in-house hardware. Until the company can resolve the issue, though, Surface Book 2 owners with Nvidia hardware won't be able to download the May 2019 update. It's not the first issue that Microsoft has had with the May 2019 update, either: as ZDNet points out, the company had... |
Twitter won’t hide Donald Trump’s racist tweets Posted: 15 Jul 2019 01:29 PM PDT Twitter won't be treating President Donald Trump's recent tweets telling congresswomen to "go back" to their supposed home countries as a violation of its hateful conduct policy, the company confirmed to The Verge. That means the tweets won't trigger a flagging system Twitter announced last month, intended to limit the reach of banned content by public officials. On Sunday, Trump attacked a group of congresswomen — implicitly the Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) — by saying they came from "countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe" and telling them to "go back" to "the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came." All four... |
LG’s acclaimed C8 OLED 4K TV is just $948 at Google Express Posted: 15 Jul 2019 01:28 PM PDT It's not often you find a too-good-to-be-true deal on an 4K HDR OLED TV, but Google Express is coming through on Amazon Prime Day, per Android Central. The 55-inch LG C8 OLED is $948 right now, the lowest price that we've seen. To get this discount price, simply click the "add to cart" button at Google Express. Doing so will knock $548 off of the total, then enter the code FOHTTK at checkout to save another $100 off of the original price. This deal ends tomorrow, or sooner if supply runs dry. Compared to a backlit LED or LCD television, an OLED TV has per-pixel control for unparalleled color contrast, and it can display true blacks for a more accurate picture. The C8 debuted in early 2018, and, unlike the usually-cheaper B8 OLED, it has... |
TikTok took over VidCon, and YouTube is next Posted: 15 Jul 2019 12:59 PM PDT Pandemonium at VidCon is generally a good signifier of what people actually care about. Last year, it was YouTuber Tana Mongeau, who threw a disastrous, off-venue mini convention after being snubbed by VidCon. Before that, controversial personality Logan Paul caused a stampede just months after becoming one of the most detested YouTubers for his suicide forest video. Ever since it began in 2009, VidCon — the premiere convention for online creators — has revolved around the who's-who of YouTube. This year, YouTubers took a backseat to the creator scene's new rockstars: TikTokers. Conventions are a lot like high school — everyone wants to be invited to the best parties with the coolest people. This year, that party belonged to TikTok. It... |
Twitter desktop redesign adopts some of its mobile app’s best features Posted: 15 Jul 2019 12:56 PM PDT Twitter is rolling out a new desktop design today that adds more customization options and a completely rearranged navigation experience. The redesign has been open to testers for the past few months, but it will be available to everyone over the next few days. Unlike previous redesigns, however, opting into the new experience will be mandatory, and there will be no legacy Twitter to fall back to, reports Mashable. The biggest, most noticeable change is that the top navigation bar has been moved to the left sidebar, which contains bookmarks, lists, your profile, and a new explore tab. Twitter says the explore tab has been brought over from its mobile app to feature more live videos and personalized local trends. Direct messages have also... |
