A war is brewing in the new trailer for HBO’s fantasy series His Dark Materials Posted: 18 Jul 2019 06:09 PM PDT Image: HBO The BBC and HBO unveiled a new trailer for their upcoming TV series, His Dark Materials, showing off a fantastical world where a war is brewing between an authoritarian Church and those who resist it. Based off the book series by Philip Pullman, the series is set in an alternate world where every person has their own shapeshifting, animal-shaped companion, a manifestation of their soul. These companions are called Daemons. The story follows a young girl named Lyra Belacqua (played by Logan's Dafne Keen) who grows up as an orphan in Oxford. When children begin vanishing, including her best friend Roger, she sets off into the Arctic to find him, and discovers a conspiracy involving her world's domineering Church. This latest trailer... |
Orlando police once again ditch Amazon’s facial recognition software Posted: 18 Jul 2019 05:30 PM PDT Illustration by James Bareham / The Verge Amazon's controversial Rekognition platform, its artificial intelligence-powered facial recognition software, is no longer being used by Orlando law enforcement, ending the second attempt to use the technology in a pilot phase in central Florida. The reason: the city didn't have the necessary equipment or bandwidth to get it properly running and never once was able to test it live. The news, reported today by Orlando Weekly, marks another high-profile setback for Rekognition, which has been plagued by criticism of its contributions to bias policing, unlawful surveillance, and racial profiling, as well as the clandestine way Amazon has gone about selling it to police departments while it's still in active development. The use of... |
Southwest Airlines cancels Boeing 737 Max flights until at least November Posted: 18 Jul 2019 02:56 PM PDT Photo by Ralph Freso/Getty Images Southwest Airlines has canceled thousands more Boeing 737 Max flights, this time until at least November, after the Federal Aviation Administration recently discovered a new flaw in the plane's flight software. The company's announcement follows news that United and American Airlines are also delaying the reintroduction of the 737 Max until November. The three US airlines have spent the last few weeks repeatedly announcing new cancellations as Boeing and the FAA work to re-certify the 737 Max, after it was involved in two fatal crashes within the span of five months that claimed 346 lives. Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenberg said in a tweet Thursday that the plane's grounding, which was ordered by regulators around the world in March, is... |
Google’s Stadia Controller won’t work with Bluetooth headsets at launch Posted: 18 Jul 2019 02:49 PM PDT Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Google's Stadia controller won't be able to wirelessly stream game audio to your Bluetooth headphones or gaming headsets when it launches in November, according to Stadia Product Director Andrey Doronichev. In a Reddit AMA earlier today, Doronichev suggests people plug in a set of wired headphones into the controller's 3.5mm jack if they want to listen to game audio in privacy. There will be a work-around for Stadia users come launch time — that is, so long as you have a Pixel-series phone or plan to play Stadia games on the Chrome browser. Pointed out by 9to5Google, Doronichev says that you'll be able to use your Bluetooth headphones to play Stadia by pairing them to your PC or Pixel phone, which will be one of the only mobile device... |
Let’s all boggle at the furry erotic dream that is the first trailer for Tom Hooper’s Cats Posted: 18 Jul 2019 02:48 PM PDT Photo: Warner Bros. The first trailer for Cats — the first film adaption of the long-running, record-breaking Broadway musical — has arrived, and it's an intensely surreal experience. As promised in a behind-the-scenes video released yesterday, the film consists of live human actors singing and dancing on oversized sets, meant to make them appear about the comparative size of actual housecats. And rather than using Broadway's elaborate fur costumes, director Tom Hooper (Les Misérables, The King's Speech) chose to use motion capture and CGI to give the performers sleek, fuzzy pelts. It's visually startling, especially when you recognize the actors under these very expensive, high-tech versions of Instagram filters. Much like Hooper's Les Misérables, his C... |
Microsoft’s Surface and cloud focus helps boost Q4 earnings as Xbox sales disappoint Posted: 18 Jul 2019 01:17 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Microsoft posted the fourth quarter of its 2019 financial results today, reporting revenue of $33.7 billion and net income of $13.2 billion. Both are big increases year-over-year, setting a new record fiscal year for Microsoft. The results also come as Microsoft continues to be valued as a $1 trillion company thanks to the company's market cap. Microsoft first passed the $1 trillion milestone in this quarter, thanks to its continued growth in cloud and diverse businesses. Surface revenue was up in the same quarter last year, and it's up once again by 14 percent. Microsoft attributes this to "strong growth in our commercial segment." This growth shows that Surface hardware is selling well, despite no new refreshed models during this... |
The first trailer for Top Gun: Maverick is a flashback to 1986 Posted: 18 Jul 2019 12:58 PM PDT Image: Paramount Pictures At San Diego Comic-Con today, Tom Cruise made a surprise appearance during Paramount Pictures' Terminator: Dark Fate panel in Hall H to debut a trailer for his next action film, Top Gun: Maverick. The film is a direct sequel to 1986's Top Gun, the film that helped establish Cruise as an official Hollywood star. It's set 34 years later, with Cruise reprising his role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, now a flight instructor at the Topgun, the Navy's Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar. There, he's teaching the son of his late partner, Nick "Goose" Bradshaw, who's following in his father's footsteps. There are plenty of callbacks to the original film in the trailer as well — Cruise on a motorcycle, playing volleyball, and of... |
The excellent Flappy Bird battle royale game is now available for everyone Posted: 18 Jul 2019 11:47 AM PDT Flappy Bird is a gaming legend and one of the most explosively popular mobile games ever made. But what if it were more like Fortnite? That's the idea behind Flappy Royale, a new game from developers Orta Therox and Em Lazer-Walker (with contributions from Zach Gage). It mashes together the endless flapping gameplay of Flappy Bird with the last-bird-standing style of the battle royale genre that's all the rage these days. Gameplay is simple, just like it was in the original game: tap on your bird to flap and dodge your way through some suspiciously Mario-esque pipes. Except the goal isn't to survive as long as you can; it's to survive longer than the other 99 players, all of whom you can see flapping alongside you in real time. And... |
Overwatch’s new ‘role queue’ feature lets you play the hero you want Posted: 18 Jul 2019 11:00 AM PDT Overwatch players all know the feeling: you're in a match with random people, and no one wants to play support. With only a few seconds to make a choice, you're stuck taking on a role you don't enjoy or feel comfortable playing, just so your squad has a chance at winning. It's something that has plagued the hero shooter for years, but it looks like developer Blizzard finally has a solution. Today, the company is announcing role queue, a feature that lets you choose what kind of character you want to play as — whether that's support, tank, or damage — before heading into a match. Blizzard says the new feature is designed to "create an environment that fosters teamwork and encourages players to bring their very best to every match." |
YouTube Music now lets you flip between a song and its music video with a tap Posted: 18 Jul 2019 10:38 AM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge YouTube Music has introduced a neat little feature that lets users flip between listening to a song to watching that song's music video without any interruption. If a video is available, the top of the app's screen will now have two buttons that say "song" and "video." Tapping video should switch over to the song's official music video without any hiccups or pauses. Then, tapping song reverts back to just the audio and the song's cover art. It's all time-matched, so switching in the middle of a song will jump to the corresponding point in the video. If you want to stick to just audio, go into settings and turn off the music video option by toggling "don't play music videos." YouTube says it's matched... |
