Lyft pulls its electric bike fleet from San Francisco streets after some catch fire Posted: 31 Jul 2019 04:43 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Lyft is pulling its pink electric bicycles from the streets of San Francisco, just two months after deploying them, because some of these bikes caught fire while in use. The bikes, officially labeled Lyft bikes and accessible under the newly rebranded Bay Wheels platform (formerly Ford GoBike), are one of the ride-hailing company's new dockless mobility options, all operated by the Lyft-owned bikeshare company Motivate. Lyft previously pulled its electric bikes off city streets nationwide back in April after a braking malfunction proved extremely dangerous to riders. Lyft has spent months working on redeploying the fleet so that it could support both docked, non-electric bikes and dockless electric ones. (The electric ones are similar... |
Microsoft’s new Mac vs. PC ad gets a guy named ‘Mac Book’ to diss Apple Posted: 31 Jul 2019 04:15 PM PDT Apple and Microsoft have a storied history of duking it out on TV, often cleverly sniping at each other in a series of iconic Mac vs. PC ads. But Microsoft's latest campaign is a rather low blow — it apparently found a guy named Mackenzie Book (Mac Book, get it?) to testify that the Surface Laptop 2 is a better buy than a MacBook. Imagine the audacity of combing the world for a single actor with the right name, just so you can arrive at the punchline "Mac Book says get a Surface Laptop" without an army of lawyers breathing down your throat. Would Apple stoop to finding a "Mike Rosoft" to tout a new iPad? I think not. It's still too busy deciding whether the iPad Pro is a computer or no! Which Microsoft has an opinion on, too. In the... |
Here comes Big Boy: a children’s story Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:05 PM PDT After spending 50 years on display in a museum, the world's largest steam engine is finally getting to stretch its wheels and blow the cobwebs out of its steam whistle for a journey across the Midwest. Big Boy, as the locomotive is known, is sparking delight in all the towns he visits. The Union Pacific Railroad restored the historic train engine to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. I have a two-year-old son, so as you can imagine I read a lot of books about trains. Often the same book about trains, over and over again, until it basically has scrambled my brain. Now I've been tasked with writing my own children's story about trains, in honor of Union Pacific locomotive No. 4014, aka Big... |
How to watch part two of the 2020 Democratic debates tonight Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:19 PM PDT Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images The race is on for who will be the Democratic presidential candidate in 2020. Once again, 20 candidates are spending two nights trying to convince US Democrats that they are the right person to run against Donald Trump. This time, CNN is sponsoring the event, which is taking place at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, Michigan. Things were lively on the first night, as front-runners Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren made nice with each other while most of the other candidates went on the attack. Tonight, Joe Biden will test his mettle against Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, and other hopefuls. If you want to follow these debates as they happen, here's how to do it: When are the debates?Like last month's debates, these were split up into two... |
You can save $25 on Apple’s second-generation AirPods until later tonight Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:44 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge AirPods, Apple's truly wireless headphones, are $25 off of their regular $159.99 price at Rakuten until tonight at 11:59PM ET, July 31st. To get in on this deal, you'll need to create a free Rakuten account, then paste HND24 in at checkout. These AirPods are Apple's latest model and come in the standard, non-wireless charging case. If you're looking for what sets these apart from the first-generation model, it's the H1 wireless chip. It allows hands-free "Hey Siri" voice commands and speeds up the time it takes to switch between, say, your iPhone and iPad, or whatever else you're connected to. It also lowers the audio latency while you play games and adds an additional hour of battery life during talk time, totaling three hours per... |
Solar-sailing satellite proves it can use light to propel through space Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:38 PM PDT LightSail 2's solar sail, as seen from the spacecraft's onboard camera | Image: The Planetary Society The Planetary Society's experimental LightSail 2 spacecraft — designed to fly on light coming from the Sun — has lived up to its namesake. The nonprofit today announced that the satellite has successfully raised its orbit around Earth thanks to sunlight pushing on the vehicle's large, reflective solar sail. It marks the first time a spacecraft in Earth's orbit has used solar sailing to change its path around our planet. LightSail 2 has been in a low orbit above Earth since its launch on top of a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket on June 25th. Last week, the spacecraft successfully deployed its sail — a thin, square piece of mylar about the size of a boxing ring. Since then, the Planetary Society has been twisting and turning the sail's position... |
FTC says ‘you will be disappointed’ if you choose $125 for Equifax payout Posted: 31 Jul 2019 11:52 AM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge The Federal Trade Commission said today there's been "overwhelming" interest in a settlement agreement with Equifax, and that consumers looking for a previously announced payout of up to $125 may be disappointed. The agency said this month that it had reached a $700 million agreement with the credit reporting agency over a massive breach of private data in 2017. As part of the settlement, consumers whose data was compromised could request up to $125 or free credit monitoring services. The potential for a quick payout generated major interest, but only $31 million of the settlement was set aside for cash payouts, meaning each payout could be far smaller than $125, depending on how many people request one. Hyperloop project in India inches closer to reality Posted: 31 Jul 2019 11:28 AM PDT There is no fully functional hyperloop in the world, but that could soon change, as officials in India have recently designated the ultra-fast, futuristic transportation system a "public infrastructure project" and will soon be taking bids on its construction. There are still many hurdles to overcome, such as certifying the hyperloop as safe for human passengers. But Virgin Hyperloop One, one of the handful of companies working to turn Elon Musk's dream of supersonic travel through vacuum tubes a reality, is confident that its project in the western district of Maharashtra is all but a done deal. Officials in Maharashtra have named Virgin Hyperloop One and its partner shipping giant DP World as... |
In Hobbs & Shaw, the Fast & Furious crew is basically the X-Men Posted: 31 Jul 2019 11:18 AM PDT Photo: Universal Pictures The Fast and the Furious series has undergone some profound changes since 2001 when the franchise launched with a film about LA car enthusiasts who fund their passion for illegal street races by boosting DVD players. (It was a different era.) The original film wasn't exactly a low-key indie, but nothing about it suggested that it would eventually evolve into a globetrotting action franchise that pitted Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his ever-expanding crew against international terrorists and other nefarious foes. The series has switched genres a couple of times, but at this point, it resembles nothing so much as the X-Men (not the superpowered mutants of the movies so much as the X-Men from the long-running comics, in which colorful... |
The Capital One breach is more complicated than it looks Posted: 31 Jul 2019 10:33 AM PDT JOHANNES EISELE/AFP/Getty Images On Monday night, Capital One and its customers got some very bad news. The company had been breached, spilling hundreds of thousands of social security numbers and account details into public view. The New York Attorney General is already investigating whether Capital One is negligent, but the broader story is familiar: a big company let a lot of sensitive data go missing, and customers bore most of the risk. But the closer you look, the stranger the story is. The alleged hacker, Paige Thompson aka "Erratic," was caught and charged at the same time the breach became public, and she didn't seem interested in covering her tracks. We don't know exactly what she did with the data once she got it, but she doesn't fit the profile of most... |
