| 7-Eleven Japan shut down its mobile payment app after hackers stole $500,000 from users Posted: 06 Jul 2019 11:56 AM PDT  On Thursday, 7-Eleven Japan suspended a recently-launched mobile payments feature on its 7Pay app after a flaw allowed a third party to make bogus charges on hundreds of customer accounts. The company released the feature on Monday, July 1st: it allowed customers to scan a barcode with the app and charge a linked credit or debit card. However, the company received a complaint the next day: a customer noticed a charge that they didn't make. The app had a flaw, according to Yahoo News Japan (via ZDnet). A hacker would only need to know a user's date of birth, their email, and phone number, and could send a password reset request to another email address. | Google is testing a play button for Chrome’s toolbar Posted: 06 Jul 2019 11:26 AM PDT  It appears that Google will soon add a play button to its Chrome browser, as spotted by ZDnet and Techdows. The button will live on Chrome's toolbar, and will allow users to play or pause a video or music that's playing in a tab. The feature is called Global Media Controls, and it's currently being tested on Chrome's Development browser, Canary. Once it's enabled, the feature appears next to the URL field, and will highlight what is playing, even if it's on a different tab. If you have the Canary browser and want to test it out for yourself, you can go to its experiments page, chrome://flags/, and search for "Global Media Controls." | Formula E’s electric off-road SUV is an absolute unit Posted: 06 Jul 2019 10:25 AM PDT  Formula E, the first global all-electric racing series, has unveiled the racecar that will run in its new upcoming off-road sister sport, "Extreme E." Dubbed Odyssey 21, the all-electric SUV made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK this weekend. It has even been making runs up the famous Goodwood hill, and while it's still just a prototype, one thing is clear: it's an absolute unit. I wouldn't say that just to say it, either. The wheels alone measure 940mm (37 inches!) in diameter, according to Extreme E's organizers. The SUV's body is 2.3 meters (7.5 feet) wide, 1.9 meters (6.2 feet) tall, 4.4 meters (14.4 feet) long, and the whole thing weighs a whopping 1,650 kilograms (3,638 pounds).

| 7 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 06 Jul 2019 09:00 AM PDT  With New York City's libraries dropping access to Kanopy last week, I found time to squeeze in one more movie the service carried that I hadn't seen elsewhere: Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, an odd film based on a mistaken real-life theory that a woman found dead in Minnesota had been hunting for the fictional treasure from Fargo. It's a great one-line premise that very much made me interested in seeing the movie. But it turns out that centering a film around a character who's strange enough to mistake a fictional film for a real event makes it very challenging for that character to also be thoughtful and compelling enough to lead a quiet, emotional movie. | Professor faces 219-year prison sentence for sending missile chip tech to China Posted: 06 Jul 2019 07:00 AM PDT  A University of California, Los Angeles professor faces a maximum sentence of 219 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of smuggling chips with military applications to China. Yi-Chi Shih, an electrical engineer and adjunct professor at UCLA, was found guilty last month by a Los Angeles jury, officials said in a statement this week. He was convicted on 18 counts, including making an illegal export and multiple fraud charges. Shih and another defendant, Kiet Ahn Mai, were found to have worked together to defraud an American semiconductor chip manufacturer. According to prosecutors, Mai posed as a potential customer to obtain chip designs from the unnamed company, then illegally sent the products to China. ... |
