7 new trailers you should watch this week Posted: 10 Aug 2019 09:00 AM PDT Photo: Amazon I watched A Scanner Darkly the other week for the first time in probably a decade. In many ways, the horrors it depicts — lives destroyed by drugs, corporations complicit in that destruction — are more relevant now than they were when the film adaption of Philip K. Dick's book was initially released. That also makes the film somewhat harder to watch because it constantly feels like there's more it could be doing. It's a lethargic, trippy movie, and while that plays into the theme, it also puts the film's characters behind a pall. It's not really clear what anyone's doing or why, and the minimal plot is far too empty to feel important. Mostly, the film made me think that there has to be a better use for rotoscoped animation. It's a... |
Apple’s next iPad Pro could come with a rear triple-camera array Posted: 10 Aug 2019 08:42 AM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge It's widely expected that Apple will release an iPhone with a triple-camera array on the back, and a new rumor suggests that the company's next iPads might also get multiple rear camera systems. Mac Otakara reports (via AppleInsider) that the next iPad Pro could come with a triple-camera array, while the regular 10.2 inch iPad might come with a dual-camera system. Apple updated its iPad Mini, and iPad Air earlier this year, and it's expected to unveil some additional updates for the iPad and iPad Pro later this year, which could include the new camera systems. Mac Otakara cites accessory diagrams from Apple suppliers, which point to the iPad Pro getting a bigger camera array. The upcoming iPhone 11 is rumored to be getting a similar... |
Watch Porsche’s first electric car make an EV expert’s mind melt Posted: 10 Aug 2019 08:00 AM PDT Porsche started teasing its first all-electric car almost four years ago to the month, and we've learned a lot about it since then. Two of the biggest things left to discover about the car (called the Taycan) are what it will truly, actually, finally look like, and how it performs. We can now start to fill in the latter, though, because former Fifth Gear presenter Jonny Smith repeatedly put the new electric Porsche through its launch mode paces in a new video published this week. If you're not familiar with Smith, he's an appropriate person to get the first crack at giving the Porsche Taycan a full go. Not only does he make loads of videos about electric cars on the Fully Charged YouTube channel, he's known for taking a tiny 1970s... |
Small satellite launcher Vector pauses operations after ousting CEO Posted: 10 Aug 2019 07:00 AM PDT The Vector-R taking off on its second suborbital test flight in 2017 | Photo: Vector Aerospace startup Vector — a US company developing small rockets to send small satellites into orbit — announced on Friday it is pausing operations due "to a significant change in financing." The company's CEO, Jim Cantrell, has also left and been replaced by John Garvey, one of the company's co-founders. Those abrupt changes for the company come just a few days after Vector received its first launch contract from the US Air Force valued at $3.4 million. Now, the company says it will try to figure out how to move forward. "A core team is evaluating options on completing the development of the company's Vector-R small launch vehicle, while also supporting the Air Force and other government agencies on programs such as the recent ASLON-45... |
The Honor Vision TV is Huawei’s first HarmonyOS device Posted: 10 Aug 2019 06:06 AM PDT Huawei has announced its first HarmonyOS-powered devices: a pair of smart TVs called the Honor Vision and Honor Vision Pro, which will go on sale in China next week, reports Gadgets360. Announced yesterday, HarmonyOS is Huawei's big attempt to decrease its reliance on Google's Android operating system. Since Google suspended Huawei's Android license back in May, the company has been open about its plans to develop an alternative operating system, although it says that HarmonyOS has been in development for over two years. Eventually, HarmonyOS will run on everything from wearables to PCs and tablets, but for now Huawei says its focus is on "smart screens" like this. Although the company has indicated that the OS is ready to run on... |
