Amazon will let you opt out of human review of Alexa recordings Posted: 02 Aug 2019 05:55 PM PDT Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge First Google, then Apple, and now Amazon: all three are bowing to pressure from the EU over the issue of humans reviewing recordings from their respective digital assistants. While Apple and Google paused human review, Amazon has decided to offer a clearer, more comprehensive opt-out setting to Alexa users. Amazon already offered a much clearer set of privacy policies than either Google or Apple — having set up a privacy portal after the last round of scandals over Alexa voice recordings revealed more than most realized. That portal now has updated language around what checking certain boxes will do. Specifically, you can go to your Amazon Alexa app and navigate to your settings, then "Alexa Privacy" and finally "Manage How Your Data... |
Apple Card restrictions include no jailbreaking or cryptocurrency purchases Posted: 02 Aug 2019 04:26 PM PDT Image: Apple Apple has revealed more details about its upcoming credit card, and the Apple Card will come with one unique restriction and one not-so-unique restriction. Thanks to the card's customer agreement, which was posted publicly on creditor Goldman Sachs' website this afternoon, we know now the Apple Card won't play nice with a jailbroken iPhone, via 9to5Mac. And according to Reuters, it will also come with a ban on purchasing cash advances and cash equivalents, with the latter including cryptocurrencies, casino chips, and lottery tickets. The crypto ban is not so unusual. It's rare to have a line of credit that can be used for cash equivalents. A number of states also have laws on the books that prohibits the use of credit for items like... |
Google starts selling its Titan security key in Canada, Japan, the UK, and France Posted: 02 Aug 2019 03:26 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge A year after arriving solely in the US, Google's Titan two-factor authorization security key has now landed in Google's online stores in Canada, Japan, the UK, and France. If you are working with sensitive data in one of those countries, it might be worth considering. Google's Titan security key is a physical security solution that (similar to competition from Yubico and Feitian) enables hardware-based two-factor authentication for the FIDO standard, letting you log into a number of apps and browsers using the key to verify that it's actually you, instead of relying on a comparatively weak password. The key can connect to the device that requires authentication in three ways — via USB, NFC, or Bluetooth. |
Instagram and WhatsApp will add ‘from Facebook’ to their names Posted: 02 Aug 2019 03:17 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Just how uncool can Facebook make Instagram and WhatsApp? If exerting more influence over the direction of both apps by installing Facebook executives wasn't enough, now the social network giant is going to add "Facebook" to their names. Instagram will soon become "Instagram from Facebook" and WhatsApp will turn into "WhatsApp from Facebook." The company already follows this approach with its Workplace app. The Information first reported the planned changes, which Facebook confirmed directly. The new titles will appear in the title for both apps in Apple's App Store and Google Play. On your device's home screen, the name for each will mercifully remain the same (for now). But it's also very likely that you'll see "from Facebook" on the... |
Roblox surpasses Minecraft with 100 million monthly players Posted: 02 Aug 2019 02:22 PM PDT Minecraft may be having a moment again thanks to newfound interest from popular YouTubers and an uptick in nostalgia-induced playing, but even the world-building crafting game can't compete with Roblox. Roblox, a popular digital playground similar to communities like Habbo Hotel and games like Second Life, has hit a new milestone — 100 million monthly active users. The company celebrated by released an exclusive, limited-edition accessory for players, which can be redeemed for free. "Roblox began with just 100 players and a handful of creators who inspired one another, unlocking this groundswell of creativity, collaboration, and imagination that continues to grow," CEO David Baszucki said in a press release today. The company has been... |
Amy Klobuchar wants to help the government go harder on monopolies Posted: 02 Aug 2019 02:07 PM PDT Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images On Friday, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) put out a new bill that would give the United States's antitrust enforcers the ability to seek fines over anti-competitive behavior, something that, if approved, could scare big companies into following the law because there would be clear punishments for violations. Right now, the federal government has its hands tied when it comes to punishing anti-competitive behavior. In most cases, the FTC opts to settle with companies rather than sue them when they're believed to violate the law. Klobuchar's "Monopolization Deterrence Act" would empower both the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission with the authority to seek civil penalties for behavior they deem monopolistic. In theory, the bill... |

Epic details the future of competitive Fortnite after the World Cup Posted: 02 Aug 2019 01:48 PM PDT Photo by Mike Stobe/Getty Images Epic's first year of competitive Fortnite wrapped on Sunday with the World Cup in New York, but the developer has certainly been keeping busy. The battle royale hit's tenth season launched just yesterday, and today the developer has released details about the title's e-sports future. Starting August 17th, Epic will be hosting the Champion Series, a new online tournament circuit designed to replace its the season model it experimented with starting last summer. The Champion Series will take place over five weeks with weekend tournaments, culminating in a three-day championship tournament starting September 21st that will crown seasonal winners from each world region. The initial mode will be trios, a never-before-seen team structure for... |
Ninja’s 80,000 Mixer viewers show that he’s bigger than just Twitch Posted: 02 Aug 2019 01:31 PM PDT Photo: Ryan Hadji/Red Bull Content Pool Tyler "Ninja" Blevins — the Fortnite livestreamer and all-around entertainer — had his first exclusive broadcast on Microsoft's Mixer platform; in the moments before his broadcast officially began, the number of people watching his stream crossed 50,000 and 60,000 people to land, in its first moments, somewhere around 76,000 sets of eyes. (It grew to 80,000 just after Blevins's first victory.) Mixer competes with Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook for a relatively narrow share of the livestreaming market. Yesterday, Blevins announced his move to the service, in a tweet that blew up gaming's corner of the internet; he was leaving behind 14.7 million followers on Twitch, and striking out for a service that, comparatively, nobody knew much... |
Samsung’s take on the Surface Laptop leaks out Posted: 02 Aug 2019 01:26 PM PDT Samsung appears to have a new Windows laptop on the way with a design that seems to have taken some inspiration from Microsoft. The Galaxy Book S, which was leaked this afternoon by reporter Evan Blass, has a very square, mono-color keyboard and trackpad layout that very much resembles the design of Microsoft's Surface Laptop, minus the Surface's trademark fabric covering. The reset of the computer is more of a departure, though. From the side, it still looks a lot like a Samsung laptop, and there's no image yet of the top of the device. Samsung also seems to have stuck with a thinner screen aspect ratio. For now, spec details are limited. We can see a single USB-C port and a headphone jack, and there's some speculation... |
