One of two devices recently filed by Sonos with the FCC is a Bluetooth speaker, The Verge can confirm. In the filing for product model S17, Sonos directly states that it's "a high-performance wireless speaker and part of the Sonos sound system. The device's primary function will be for streaming with Wi-Fi, but also features Bluetooth audio streaming and Bluetooth Low Energy, used for simplified setup." (Emphasis added by The Verge.) No other previous Sonos speaker has supported Bluetooth music playback, though the Sonos One includes BLE for the same reason of easier setup.

The product label for S17 features a curved blue line running across it, which could be a reference to the speaker's unique functionality in the Sonos lineup. It...

IGN reported this afternoon that Walmart is pulling violent video games from shelves, but the retailer confirmed to The Verge that it has not directed stores to remove them or halt sales. Instead, the company is removing signage, advertisements, and demos for some video games featuring violence and firearms in the wake of the El Paso mass shooting this past weekend.

"We've taken this action out of respect for the incidents of the past week, and it does not reflect a long-term change in our video game assortment," a company spokesperson told The Verge. "We are focused on assisting our associates and their families, as well as supporting the community, as we continue a thoughtful and thorough review of our policies."

The spokesperson...

MoviePass reportedly changed account passwords to prevent users from seeing films

Struggling theater subscription service MoviePass reportedly resorted to extreme tactics to prevent users from taking advantage of core features, according to a new report from Business Insider. In particular, the report highlights a strategy the company used to keep users from bankrupting it, by changing account passwords to prevent ticket purchases that might cost it money it didn't have.

Business Insider's report looks at how Ted Farnsworth, CEO of MoviePass parent company Helios & Matheson Analytics, and MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe, transformed the company from a little-known subscription service to a nationwide sensation. It also delves deep into the questionable business strategies and tactics the duo used to keep the company afloat,...

Watch DARPA test out a swarm of drones

Aeroquad Drone (STOCK)

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is experimenting with using a swarm of autonomous drones and ground robots to assist with military missions. In a video of a recent test, DARPA showed how its robots analyzed two city blocks to find, surround, and secure a mock city building.

DARPA conducted its test back in June in Georgia, featuring both drones and ground-based robots. The demonstration was part of DARPA's OFFensive Swarm-Enabled Tactics (OFFSET) program, which is designed to eventually accompany small infantry units as they work in dense urban environments, and could eventually scale up to 250 drones and ground robots. The test back in June was the second of six planned tests, which DARPA says will increase in...

Verizon is charging a rural library $880 for accidentally using 440MB of data in Canada

Internet telecom companies aren't your friends, no matter how cheerful they may try to portray themselves in advertisements. The latest reminder of that fact is the story of Tully Free Library in rural Tully, NY, which got hit by an absurd $880 bill from Verizon for using a mere 440 megabytes of data while accidentally roaming in Canada, according to a report from Ars Technica.

The Tully Library offers a hotspot-lending program for residents to get internet access, which is otherwise limited in the town. The program had originally been funded by the Central New York Library Resources Council, which paid for the first two years of the hotspots. But when that grant ended, the library decided to keep the program going on its own.

How to block distracting apps on your Android phone

Posted: 09 Aug 2019 02:00 PM PDT

Like many modern information workers, my personal phone serves many purposes. It's how I communicate with friends and family; it's how I experience entertainment; it's how I navigate around a city; it's how I purchase my morning coffee; it's how I control countless smart home devices; and so on and so forth. It's also crucial to how I perform my job, by letting me keep on top of the never-ending news cycle and communicate with my co-workers and other contacts through Slack and email.

Managing that dual-purposeness of my phone has always been a challenge. It's all too easy to just idly open Twitter or Slack on a Saturday while I'm standing in line to pay for groceries or waiting for my kid to finish brushing their teeth, and then get...

No, the Galaxy Note 10 doesn’t have a stainless steel frame

Posted: 09 Aug 2019 01:36 PM PDT

Samsung managed to prompt some confusion the other day when a video uploaded to its own YouTube channel (now unlisted and probably set for deletion) mentioned that the Galaxy Note 10 was made from stainless steel. "Stainless steel and glass meld seamlessly to minimize bezel," says the video's narrator.

Wait, what?

The company never mentioned anything about switching from aluminum to steel during press briefings — nor was it brought up onstage during this week's Unpacked event. Why would Samsung upgrade to a new material and not tell anyone?

It didn't. The video was completely wrong.

Samsung has now confirmed to The Verge that the Note 10's frame is made from aluminum, just like the company's other flagships in recent years. It's odd...

Sonos FCC filings reveal a mystery device and likely Connect refresh

Posted: 09 Aug 2019 01:16 PM PDT

Yesterday Sonos invited media to come learn about new hardware later this month, and the company is already pushing some fresh products through the FCC. Model numbers S17 and S23 are now listed on the FCC's site. Credit goes to Dave Zatz for spotting them. Now let's get to figuring out what they might be.

S23 has the exact same label style as the Sonos Amp, which leads me to believe it's a revamped version of the old Sonos Connect. No other current Sonos device, other than the Amp, shares this circular fine print, and it makes sense for the Amp and Connect to share a similar design, with the Connect priced significantly lower.

A victim of billionaire Jeffrey Epstein testified that she was forced to have sex with MIT professor Marvin Minsky, as revealed in a newly unsealed deposition. Epstein was registered as a sex offender in 2008 as part of a controversial plea deal. More recently, he was arrested on charges of sex trafficking amid a flood of new allegations.

Minsky, who died in 2016, was known as an associate of Epstein, but this is the first direct accusation implicating the AI pioneer in Epstein's broader sex trafficking network. The deposition also names Prince Andrew of Britain and former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, among others.

The accusation against Minsky was made by Virginia Giuffre, who was deposed in May 2016 as part of a broader...

YouTube’s moderators think top creators get special treatment — the community agrees

Posted: 09 Aug 2019 12:55 PM PDT

Logan Paul

Several YouTube moderators say that the platform's most popular creators receive special treatment when it comes to moderation of their channels, allowing them to get away with worse behavior than a typical YouTube creator would, according to a new report from The Washington Post. Many of YouTube's creators aren't surprised.

Moderators told The Washington Post that "recommendations to strip advertising" from videos that appeared to violate the site's rules were "frequently overruled by higher-ups" when high-profile creators were involved. This includes creators like Logan Paul, Steven Crowder, and Felix "PewDiePie" Kjellberg, all of whom have faced controversies around the content on their channels. While all three creators have been...
