See how an AI system classifies you based on your selfie Posted: 16 Sep 2019 04:57 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Modern artificial intelligence is often lauded for its growing sophistication, but mostly in doomer terms. If you're on the apocalyptic end of the spectrum, the AI revolution will automate millions of jobs, eliminate the barrier between reality and artifice, and, eventually, force humanity to the brink of extinction. Along the way, maybe we get robot butlers, maybe we're stuffed into embryonic pods and harvested for energy. Who knows. But it's easy to forget that most AI right now is terribly stupid and only useful in narrow, niche domains for which its underlying software has been specifically trained, like playing an ancient Chinese board game or translating text in one language into another. Ask your standard recognition bot to do... |
Twitch competitor Mixer adds ads, but it might be keeping the revenue for itself Posted: 16 Sep 2019 03:46 PM PDT Alex Castro / The Verge Mixer, Microsoft's answer to Twitch, has just rolled out its first ads, but it appears the only entity earning money from the ads will be Mixer itself. Some of the ads will show up on channels run by Microsoft itself — but other partnered channels, like Ninja's, will now see ads appear in front of their content that don't support them financially. Mixer announced the move last Friday on its "Level Up Cast," a weekly show about what's happening on the platform. Ads were always part of the plan, said Mixer community manager Andy Salisbury and guest host Ethan Rothamel. People who have Mixer's premium monthly subscription offering Pro won't see the ads, they said, and neither will people who have subscribed to a partnered channel. |
Nintendo’s wireless SNES controllers for Switch are now available to buy Posted: 16 Sep 2019 03:16 PM PDT If you're hankering for the perfect classic controller to play the Nintendo Switch's new collection of downloadable Super Nintendo titles, you may be happy to hear that the company's new retro wireless SNES gamepad is now available for purchase — assuming you're a Nintendo Switch Online member, of course. That's because just like last year's wireless NES gamepad, Nintendo will only let you buy one if you're already paying the $4/month, $20/year subscription fee that gives you the games to begin with. Which makes a certain degree of sense, because the old-school SNES gamepad probably isn't going to help you play a whole lot of modern games without joysticks and triggers... |
Mercedes-Benz reboots the ‘first modern car’ as a dashing EV concept Posted: 16 Sep 2019 03:01 PM PDT Images: Daimler/Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz's newest concept car is a reminder that the company pioneered the concept of cars. The Vision Mercedes Simplex, unveiled late last week at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, is essentially a modern-day reboot of the original Mercedes, the "35 PS" from 1901. Along with its successor, the original Simplex, the 35 PS helped kick off the era of the automobile, tipping the industry away from rickety, top-heavy wooden carriages that were retrofitted with engines. Instead of cramming lots of typical concept-y ideas into the new Vision Mercedes Simplex (like the company did with the Vision EQS concept announced last week, or last year's retro EQ Silver Arrow), the automaker has stayed fairly true to the original. Yes, a number of... |
Saturday Night Live fires comedian Shane Gillis over racist, homophobic comments Posted: 16 Sep 2019 02:35 PM PDT Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic for Clusterfest Saturday Night Live today fired comedian Shane Gillis after a series of racist and homophobic comments he made in the past surfaced last week. NBC released a statement, published via Vulture, that states that although the show first hired Gillis "on the strength of his talent as comedian and his impressive audition for SNL," producers were "not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days." "The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable," reads the statement, which comes from executive producer and show creator Lorne Michaels. "We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard." Gillis was chosen to appear as a featured player on the show at... |
Android TV leak reveals Google Stadia integration and ‘hero device’ coming next year Posted: 16 Sep 2019 02:26 PM PDT Google appears to be planning a bunch of updates for Android TV over the next year, including new Assistant features, a major hardware release, and support for its upcoming game streaming service, Stadia. According to XDA Developers, which saw a slide presented by Google at a recent conference, Google has already planned out the key upgrades for Android TV over the next two years. This year, it's planning to begin allowing device makers to add custom phrases to the Assistant, test in-menu ads, and launch a Play Store redesign that was previewed back in May. These features would be part of an update to Android 10. Next year's plans are a lot bigger. The most immediately interesting news is... |
Microsoft’s annual Build developer conference kicks off on May 19th Posted: 16 Sep 2019 01:23 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Microsoft will host its 2020 Build developer conference in Seattle from Tuesday, May 19th to Thursday, May 21st, the company announced today. Microsoft didn't say when tickets will go on sale, but does have a general mailing list you can sign up for to get information about the event. Build is one of Microsoft's biggest events of the year, and although the event is focused on developers, the company uses it to preview its latest Windows road map as well as updates and features coming to Office, its Edge browser, the Cortana voice assistant, and other software and services. This far out, it's hard to predict exactly what the company might talk about at this conference — but perhaps it will include updates on things announced at October's... |
Electric car owners could choose which fake sounds their cars make under new proposal Posted: 16 Sep 2019 01:21 PM PDT Photo by Sean O'Kane / The Verge The federal government is requiring automakers to include artificial motor sounds in electric and hybrid cars when traveling at low speeds to alert pedestrians, but it wants to give vehicle owners the ability to choose which sounds they use. In a notice of proposed rule-making, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says drivers should be able to "select the sound they prefer from the set of sounds installed in the vehicle." But NHTSA is also seeking feedback about whether it should limit the number of fake sounds that manufacturers should be allowed to install. The proposed rule-making would be an amendment to rules that were finalized in February 2018 requiring EVs and hybrid vehicles to emit sounds at low speeds to... |
Apple Arcade goes live for iOS 13 beta testers Posted: 16 Sep 2019 11:42 AM PDT Image: Apple A few days ahead of its scheduled September 19th launch, Apple Arcade is now live and accepting subscriptions from those participating in Apple's iOS 13 beta program. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman tweeted that Apple's gaming service, which unlocks access to dozens of ad-free games for a monthly fee, was up and running. Many other people have gained access on devices enrolled in the iOS 13 public beta. Subscriptions appear to be processing successfully, including the one-month free trial that Apple has promised, and games can be downloaded and played immediately. Over 50 titles are available at launch. The Verge has reached out to Apple for details on whether this early debut for beta customers is intentional and to confirm... |
Amazon reportedly changed its search results to boost more profitable products Posted: 16 Sep 2019 10:38 AM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Amazon began making changes to its search results last year to prioritize profitability over relevance, according to The Wall Street Journal. Those changes were reportedly spurred on by demands from Amazon's retail divisions and private label team, and they're said to have the effect of often boosting Amazon's own products in search listings. To avoid antitrust concerns at a time when Amazon's role as both a product maker and a platform company are under scrutiny, Amazon doesn't directly boost products based on how profitable they are, according to the report. Instead, the Journal says that Amazon boosts other factors that its search engine can consider, which collectively have the effect of elevating more profitable products. |
