Posted: 17 Sep 2019 07:10 PM PDT

Pocket Casts

Pocket Casts, a popular podcast app, is changing up its money-making strategy and launching a subscription service. The company previously charged users between $4 and $10 to download the app, depending on the OS and platform. The app will now be free, but users will have the option to pay $0.99 per month, or $10 per year, for a premium service.

The subscription service, called Pocket Casts Plus, includes access to desktop apps, exclusive app icons and themes, and 10GB of cloud storage for people who want to upload their audio and video content. People who previously purchased the desktop app will be given three years of Pocket Casts Plus for free.

Pocket Casts CEO Owen Grover imagines that podcast creators will use the cloud storage to...

Taiga Motors’ Orca is a $24,000 electric watercraft with a two-hour battery

Montreal startup Taiga Motors has spent the last few years tackling the tricky task of electrifying snowmobiles, but it's now turning its attention to making cleaner and quieter personal watercraft. The company unveiled a pricey new Jet Ski-style watercraft called Orca at an event in Toronto Tuesday night that can last for up to two hours on a full charge.

The Orca has a top speed of 65 miles per hour, and has 134kW of power (about 180 horsepower) on offer, which sounds like it will make for a fun ride. The 23kWh battery can be charged on standard or level 2 (240V) outlets, or more quickly with a DC fast charger (from 0 to 80 percent in 20 minutes), provided owners can find one of those near enough to the water (or with enough space to...

When two big streamers ditched Twitch, Fortnite suffered too

If you visit Twitch right now and click on the Browse tab, you'll see a constantly updated list of the most popular games on the site. As I'm writing this, there's a conspicuous absence from the big three: Fortnite. And its absence may be because two key streamers aren't on Twitch.

According to the metrics site Twitch Tracker, Fortnite dropped from pole position, where it had been holding steady for months, and has lately been hovering somewhere around third or fourth. Right now, in the early afternoon on a Tuesday, the top three games on Twitch are World of Warcraft: Classic, League of Legends, and Just Chatting (a category that generally features people talking to their viewers directly).

So where's Fortnite? It's free and available...

Uber is bringing its self-driving cars to Dallas

Posted: 17 Sep 2019 02:41 PM PDT

Uber will begin testing its self-driving cars in Dallas, Texas in November, the company announced Tuesday. The vehicles will be operated by human drivers in downtown Dallas to start out, collecting mapping data and capturing driving scenarios which Uber's engineers will then reproduce in simulation.

This doesn't mean Uber is planning to offer trips in its self-driving cars or even perform self-driving tests in Dallas. "The data we collect will inform our next steps — we may not look to test our self-driving system in Dallas immediately following this first round of data gathering," Austin Geidt, head of Uber ATG strategy, said in a Medium post. "While we are certainly excited by this possibility, we are also committed to ensuring that...

Facebook is reportedly teaming up with Ray-Ban on its smart AR glasses

Facebook has been working to build its own augmented reality glasses for the past few years. According to CNBC, these glasses (codenamed "Orion") won't be supplemental to your phone — they're supposedly built to replace it entirely. They will reportedly be able to take calls without being tethered to a smartphone, and will show information in "a small display," which sounds similar to Google Glass. The glasses are also said to have a camera that can allow users to live stream their journeys to followers and friends.

CNBC stated that Facebook partnered with popular eyewear brand Luxottica, makers of Ray-Ban glasses, to bring them to market in the next few years, possibly between 2023 and 2025. A recent post by The Information claims that...

Facebook’s ‘Supreme Court’ can overrule Zuckerberg, per new charter

Facebook has published new documents detailing the company's plans for a content oversight board, which would serve as a kind of Supreme Court for the platform. In a call with reporters on Tuesday, Facebook said that it hopes to have the board fully staffed by the end of this year, and gave more details on how the board will operate and be governed.

Last November, Mark Zuckerberg penned a blog post laying out his plan to create virtually a Supreme Court for Facebook. Once it's fully staffed, the body will be in charge of adjudicating appeals from users whose content has been removed from Facebook's platforms. It will also make judgements on cases referred to it by the company itself.

Lyft hit with another horrifying sexual assault lawsuit

Warning: this story contains descriptions of sexual assault that some readers may find disturbing.

A woman who says she was raped by her Lyft driver in 2017 is suing the ride-hailing company in California for failure to keep its passengers safe. It is the latest case about safety in the ride-hailing industry, and the latest charge against Lyft, which was sued by 14 women earlier this month alleging rape complaints against drivers.

In a statement released by her lawyer, Alison Turkos said in the fall of 2017 she hailed a Lyft after a night out with friends. "What should have been a 15 minute drive, turned into an 80 minute living nightmare," she said.

Turkos says her driver kidnapped her at gunpoint, drove her across state lines, and...

Google may reveal ‘Nest Wifi’ with beacons that double as smart speakers on October 15th

Posted: 17 Sep 2019 12:06 PM PDT

Google's mesh Wi-Fi router — Google Wifi — is nearly three years old, but it may be getting a radically different design next month. 9to5Google is reporting that the company is prepping a new "Nest Wifi" that pairs a single new hub router with two new "beacons" that will double as Google Assistant smart speakers, giving you the equivalent of two additional Google Home Mini speakers to cover additional rooms of your house with both Wi-Fi and sound.

You may note that Google would be effectively copying Amazon's second-gen Eero router by going with a pair of beacons to extend Wi-Fi coverage across your house, which could have pros and cons. In our review, we found the second-gen Eero to be just as capable as the first-gen model overall, but...

Mercedes-Benz quietly enters the e-scooter market

Mercedes-Benz is known for being a pioneer in the world of automobiles, but until now, it hadn't ventured into the world of two-wheeled electric scooters. That will change, though, as the company very quietly announced a two-wheeler at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show last week.

Stuffed inside a press release between news of Mercedes-Benz-branded over-the-ear headphones and a toy version of the company's EQC electric SUV is a brief mention of the forthcoming e-scooter. Seriously, here's every word Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler wrote about the new scooter:

E-scooters have only been allowed on German roads since June, and it is already hard to conceive of a traffic scene without them. These agile, electrically powered scooters are...
