In The Irishman, Martin Scorsese finally takes the glamour out of gangsters Posted: 27 Sep 2019 05:01 PM PDT Photo: Netflix At the press conference following the New York Film Festival press screening of the Netflix-produced feature The Irishman, director Martin Scorsese discussed the project's long gestation, noting that he and star Robert De Niro had wanted to work together again "since Casino." It sounded odd to hear it put that way, because before Casino, De Niro and Scorsese had one of the most prolific collaborations in American movies — to the point where during Casino's 1995 release, critics largely received it as an old-hat retread of Goodfellas. Now it's 2019, Casino has a better reputation, and De Niro and Scorsese haven't made a feature together in decades. That kind of time-passing blink is at the heart of The Irishman, even if its... |
Tesla and Elon Musk broke the law in labor dispute, judge rules Posted: 27 Sep 2019 04:26 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge | Photo by Joshua Lott / Getty Images In 2017, Tesla violated the National Labor Relations Act several times, Bloomberg reports, by threatening employees and retaliating against them, an administrative judge ruled today in California. Also, a May 2018 Elon Musk tweet — where Musk said that joining a union meant giving up Tesla stock options — was also illegal, the judge found.
Tesla fired one union supporter; the judge's order says this person should be reinstated with back pay. Another... |
Here’s what Lucid Motors’ $700 million EV factory will look like Posted: 27 Sep 2019 02:51 PM PDT Images: Lucid Motors Lucid Motors spent the last few years waiting to break ground on a brand-new factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, and the EV startup was finally able put things in motion late last year after it locked down a $1 billion funding round from Saudi Arabia. Now, The Verge has obtained the first images of what that factory will look like, after they were filed with Casa Grande's Planning and Developing Department this week. It's... big! And white! Perhaps unsurprisingly it... looks like a factory! In all seriousness, though, Lucid Motors looks has soome 21 million square feet to play with, according to the master site plan filed with the city. But it will start off at this site with 820,000 square feet of factory space. And instead of a gleaming... |
How Heavyweight podcast host Jonathan Goldstein helps strangers resolve their past traumas Posted: 27 Sep 2019 01:20 PM PDT Images provided by Spotify / Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge I love the podcast series Heavyweight, which started as a Gimlet Media show in 2016 and is now part of Spotify's podcast empire. It's funny, well-scripted, and surprising. Also, it's heart-warming. I need it! On the show, host Jonathan Goldstein assists his guests in confronting unresolved past conflicts, which can range from genuinely traumatic experiences to smaller spats. The fourth season premieres this week, so I spoke with Goldstein about his process for creating the show, what he looks for in guests, and, of course, whether he buys this idea that we're all living through the "golden age of podcasts." This interview has been lightly edited for clarity. Season four started this week. How long have you been working on these... |
Chrome OS 101: How to save and retrieve files Posted: 27 Sep 2019 12:34 PM PDT About three years ago, I was shopping for a Chromebook to take on a business trip — I wanted something lightweight enough to carry around all day and inexpensive enough that I wouldn't mind as much when I spilled coffee on the keyboard. I was considering two different models when a sales rep came over to see if I needed help. "You're aware," he said, "that these are Chromebooks, right? They only work online; you can't save any files to the hard drive." It wasn't the first time I've caught a sales rep in a mistake, of course. But this is a mistake that seems to have persisted. Yes, Chromebooks were created to be used predominantly online — in fact, when the first Chrome OS laptops were introduced in 2011, there were very few apps that... |
Apple TV Plus showcases its original children's content in new trailers Posted: 27 Sep 2019 11:35 AM PDT Apple TV Plus will arrive on November 1st with a couple of glossy-looking, star-studded original series that scream "Emmy potential," but there will also be shows for kids. The company has released new trailers for its first three children's shows: Snoopy in Space, Helpsters, and Ghostwriter. These aren't the first trailers for the shows, but it's clear that Apple is trying to get potential TV Plus subscribers hyped for the service's launch by releasing additional looks. The first features Charlie Brown's lovable dog in a series of 12 short films, according to a press release. Snoopy finally achieves his dream of becoming an astronaut with NASA, and he spends his time taking command of the International Space Station, exploring the... |
How artist Meyoco built an online business with pastel florals and magical girls Posted: 27 Sep 2019 11:08 AM PDT Image: Meyoco Running an online shop is a daunting task for any digital artist, with bigger hurdles than most people realize. There are on-demand printing services like Printful or Society6 that can print art on tote bags and T-shirts. But custom-made items like enamel pins or acrylic charms come with production challenges that require finding the right suppliers that specialize in making those items. (Just check out this How It's Made video that shows how much manual work goes into making enamel pins.) Indonesian artist Meyoco's illustrations — which often take inspiration from Japanese pop culture and feature magical anime girls with wavy ocean hair, translucent bottles of Ramune, and Game Boys bursting with garden flowers — are the kind of special... |
Apex Legends season three comes with a brand-new map, and it has a moving train Posted: 27 Sep 2019 10:46 AM PDT Image: Respawn Respawn made a bombshell announcement for its Apex Legends battle royale shooter this morning, revealing a brand-new map for its upcoming third season that's arriving in just a few days. The new destination, called World's Edge, is "where molten heat and chemical ice collide," indicating players will be facing off in an extreme temperature environment. In a teaser trailer for the map, we can see both icy and lava-filled battlefields. In a twist on the existing drop ship, there is also a moving train, which should add a very interesting mobile element to World's Edge. Respawn says the location, alongside its new legend Crypto, will be arriving with season three next week on October 1st. Beyond the... |
iOS 13.1.1 now available with fixes for battery drain, third-party keyboard bug, and more Posted: 27 Sep 2019 10:28 AM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Earlier this week, Apple alerted customers that third-party keyboards on iOS 13 could gain "full access" and transfer data over the internet even without user permission, and now the company has already released an update to fix it. iOS 13.1.1 is rolling out now, and along with patching up the third-party keyboard issue, it includes a fix for customers who might've experienced faster-than-normal battery drain after updating to iOS 13. The 13.1.1 release also resolves "issues that could prevent iPhone from restoring from backup," improves Siri recognition on the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max, and fixes a bug that could've led to slow syncing in Reminders. iOS 13.1.1 is Apple's latest attempt to address the bugginess of its most... |
