Best Buy is leaving smart home users in the cold, but its Wi-Fi freezer will still mostly work Posted: 06 Sep 2019 05:35 PM PDT Image: Best Buy Best Buy has quietly announced that the mobile app platform for controlling its Insignia brand of smart home devices will be shutting down on November 6th. The company says affected products will still function at a basic level, but any features that rely on its Insignia Connect app and platform will no longer work. The products include its Insignia smart wall plugs, Wi-Fi light switches, its smart camera, and its Wi-Fi freezer (yes, a Wi-Fi freezer). Best Buy is now running a reimbursement program for any unfortunate soul who decided to buy one of these products. Perhaps most importantly, Best Buy confirms on its Connect FAQ page that its smart freezer "will retain all normal freezer functions." There are also variants of the Insignia... |
The stakes are too high for Apple to spin the iPhone exploits Posted: 06 Sep 2019 02:44 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Today, Apple responded to Google's discovery of a major iPhone security flaw with a bristling statement that accused its rival of creating "false impressions." But Apple did very little to clear up those false impressions, and seems to have created some of its own, as we'll see by taking a close read. First, let's talk about what Apple did confirm. When Google originally published detailed information about the iOS exploits, it conspicuously did not say specifically why they were created or who they were targeted at. Following Google's disclosure, TechCrunch reported that the exploits were part of a state-sponsored attack that was meant to target China's minority Uighur population. (The attackers also reportedly targeted Android and... |
Facebook, Twitter, and Google must remove disinformation, Beto O’Rourke demands Posted: 06 Sep 2019 02:37 PM PDT Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke's campaign is demanding that Facebook, Twitter, and Google more aggressively counter disinformation on their platforms. In letters addressed to the companies Friday, O'Rourke's team outlines how they believe each of them could address the issue after his campaign was falsely linked to a suspected shooter on social media last weekend. That attack occurred in Odessa, Texas, killing seven people and leaving 25 injured. In the aftermath, bots worked to spread false information across social media with many claiming that the suspected shooter supported Beto O'Rourke. Posts on Facebook and Twitter suggested that the shooter had an O'Rourke sticker on his vehicle. Texas officials have denied any... |
India loses communication with lunar lander shortly before scheduled landing on the Moon Posted: 06 Sep 2019 02:19 PM PDT A scene from India's mission control room, after communication with the lander was lost | Image: ISRO What was supposed to be India's first soft landing on the Moon today appeared to end in failure when the country's robotic Vikram lander seemingly crashed into the lunar surface during its powered descent to the ground. If it had been successful, India would have become the fourth country to land a spacecraft intact on the Moon. But for now, only the United States, Russia, and China hold that title. The Vikram lander was a critical part of India's Chandrayaan-2 mission — a project aimed at learning more about the unexplored and highly intriguing south pole of the Moon. Numerous lunar spacecraft have gathered enough evidence about this region to suggest that significant amounts of water ice might be hiding on the south pole, likely in... |
News anchor sues Facebook and Reddit after a convenience store creepshot showed up in dating ads Posted: 06 Sep 2019 02:12 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge A Philadelphia news anchor has sued Facebook, Reddit, and other web platforms after a convenience store photo started showing up in dating and erectile dysfunction ads. Karen Hepp, who works for Fox 29 News, filed the suit earlier this week. She alleges that the sites violated her right of publicity and damaged her reputation with "abhorrent and disgusting" uses of the picture. Hepp's lawsuit names Facebook, Reddit, the image repository Imgur, the animated GIF site Giphy, and the porn site XNXX, alongside 10 other operators of unnamed sites. She writes that approximately two years ago, she discovered that a convenience store security camera photo of her had appeared online in some unwanted contexts. That included a Facebook ad promising... |
The Apple Card can double as an extremely sneaky knife Posted: 06 Sep 2019 01:31 PM PDT YouTube Seems like modifying the Apple Cards, with their titanium build and all-white finish, is becoming a thing. We spoke with one person who etched the design from the back of a Bicycle playing card onto his Apple Card. Another is going a step further and has sharpened the Apple Card into an actual knife. See for yourself: If you now want your own credit card-sized knife, know that there are already options that don't require you to deface your shiny new Apple Card. There's this plastic case with a knife and other tools, or another product that folds from a flat, credit card-sized sheet into a knife with a handle. If you really want to make a knife out of an actual credit card, you don't have to... |
Posted: 06 Sep 2019 01:14 PM PDT Tile doesn't want people to forget about it, especially if Apple debuts its own item tracker. Today, Tile announced a minor update to its Google Assistant integration that'll allow Assistant to directly ring a Tile. The functionality isn't launching until later this year, but clearly, Tile wants to get its news out ahead of Apple. Before, Tile just had a Google Assistant skill, which required users to say, "Hey Google, ask Tile to find my phone." Later this year, they can just say, "Hey Google, find my phone," and the Tile attached to their phone will ring. The update is minimal and helpful, although the bigger story seems to be that Tile is trying to keep its name in the broader tech news ahead of Apple's upcoming hardware event.... |
Latest Pixel 4 rumors claim 8x zoom, improved Night Sight, and new ‘Motion Mode’ Posted: 06 Sep 2019 01:13 PM PDT Image: Google, re-stitched by @atn1988 Fresh off our best look at the Pixel 4's hardware, another batch of rumors has cropped up regarding what might be the most important part of the phone: the camera. A pair of leaks claims that the upcoming smartphone will offer 8x zoom, an improved Night Sight feature, and a brand-new "Motion Mode" for shooting action shots, via 9to5Google and XDA Developers. We've known for a while that the Pixel 4 would have two rear cameras (a first for the product line): a 12-megapixel lens and a 16-megapixel telephoto lens. But these leaks are the first to detail the new capabilities of what those lenses will be able to do, with Google's smartphones historically relying as much (if not more) on the company's advanced image processing and AI tools... |
Complaint filed against a popular toy channel on YouTube could lead to big ad changes Posted: 06 Sep 2019 01:10 PM PDT The line between an advertisement and entertaining content is blurry on YouTube, and a children's rights watchdog group is asking the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to step in. The group Truth in Advertising has filed a complaint with the FTC over one specific YouTube creator's channel — Ryan ToysReview. Hosted by seven-year-old Ryan Kaji (but run by his parents), the channel often finds Kaji playing with and unboxing toys. The complaint states that Kaji's parents didn't disclose paid sponsorships from companies like Chuck E. Cheese's and Hardee's. When the channel did properly disclose paid sponsorships, they were written or voiced in a way that is impossible for preschool children to understand. "An adult might be able to tell ...... |
Procreate is getting a new graphics engine and the ability to import Photoshop brushes Posted: 06 Sep 2019 01:00 PM PDT Procreate is getting some major new brush customization tools to make the go-to iPad illustration app even better for professional artists. Its developer, Savage Interactive, revealed that the features will be part of the upcoming Procreate 5 update slated for later this year. As part of the update, the app is getting a new graphics engine called Valkyrie, which will give artists customizable brush options and let them import Adobe Photoshop brushes for the first time. It's a big deal, as working with the right brush is a huge part of any illustrators' workflow, to the point that artists sell custom brush packs for both Procreate and Photoshop. The app is also getting a new feature called Brush Studio, which is a full-screen brush... |
