Google Docs could soon show you word counts while you type

If you want to see how many words you've typed in a Google Docs document right now, you currently gotta select that from a drop-down menu first: Tools > Word Count. (There's a keyboard shortcut, sure.)

But starting this week, G Suite (read: Google Docs for business) customers can activate a live word counter that shows you word counts while you type:

"We've heard that displaying this information is helpful to users working on docs that require minimum or maximum word count," writes Google.

No kidding, Google.

It should be rolled out to all G Suite users by early October. Hopefully the rest of us get it too.

Word count: 112 words.

The next iPhone may not have reverse wireless charging for your AirPods after all

With less than 24 hours remaining until Apple reveals the iPhone 11 — or whatever they might be named — the most trusted source of Apple rumors is backing away from his prediction that they'll include reverse wireless charging that would let you use your phone to top up your wirelessly charging AirPods case.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo isn't saying quite yet that the feature has been definitively axed — but that it may have been ditched because the "charging efficiency may not meet Apple's requirements," according to 9to5Mac.

If so, it wouldn't be the first time in recent memory that Apple's had trouble bringing wireless charging up to its standards; Apple got a rare black eye this spring when it abruptly canceled its publicly announced...

Private Instagram posts and stories can be shared publicly using just a web browser

Instagram has a security flaw in the way it handles posts on accounts that have been set to private, BuzzFeed reported today. The report illustrates how a series of mouse clicks on any web browser can expose the persistent URL of private posts and stories cached on Facebook servers.

Anyone can use a web browser, like Google Chrome, to inspect the source code on a web page using the "Inspect Elements" tool. By tabbing over to the "Img" section of the Network header, you're able to find the URL of any Instagram image you've clicked on, be it a disappearing story or a photo posted to a user's feed. That URL can then be shared and the photo viewed by anyone, including people who do not follow the private account in question.

EA has announced that it'll be launching a closed technical trial for its upcoming Project Atlas cloud streaming service tonight at 10PM PT / 1AM ET, allowing anyone with an EA Origin account to sign up and potentially gain access to a test of EA's in-progress cloud gaming service. The trial will start tonight and run for two weeks.

Players selected for the trial will be able to play four games: FIFA 19, Titanfall 2, Need for Speed Rivals, and Unravel. According to a Medium post published this afternoon announcing the trial from Ken Moss, EA's chief technology officer, the company is looking to see how games perform in real-world scenarios, particularly in regard to things like latency and jitter.

Per Moss, "EA is working on leveraging...

Furious storm over Trump’s tweets continues to rage at NOAA

President Trump Receives Briefing On Hurricane Dorian At White House Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

Hurricane Dorian has moved out to sea, but a gale is still raging at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In a forceful email sent to staff on Sunday night, Craig McLean, the chief scientist of NOAA, took on anonymous members of his own organization who may have "violated NOAA's policies of scientific integrity." McLean vowed to pursue truths in a long saga involving President Trump, Hurricane Dorian, a Sharpie, a forecaster in Alabama, and an anonymous — and potentially coerced — press release.

This all started on September 1st, when President Trump tweeted that Alabama would be among the states most likely to be "hit (much) harder than anticipated." It, in fact, was not.

Twenty minutes later, the National...

New York City mayor and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Bill de Blasio has endorsed a "robot tax" and the foundation of a new government agency to oversee automation. De Blasio laid out his plan late last week in an opinion article for Wired, describing it as an alternative to the universal basic income (UBI) supported by his rival Andrew Yang.

De Blasio's plan would create a new agency called the Federal Automation and Worker Protection Agency (FAWPA), which would govern how companies could automate jobs. This would include removing tax incentives for automation and adding a "permitting process" for any company that wants to "increase automation that would displace workers." (Companies would need to offer severance packages or...

Wow Air, the bankrupt budget airline, will make a comeback in October

The last we heard of the Icelandic budget airline Wow Air was in March 2019 when it ceased operations without warning, stranding up to 4,000 passengers at the time. According to Yahoo, the airline is now on schedule to come back in October of this year, thanks to a major investment by USAerospace Associates.

Michele Ballarin, chief executive of USAerospace Associates, said in a press conference last week that Wow Air will relaunch with just two planes in operation, with the potential to increase that number to more than 10 aircraft by summer 2020. The relaunched Wow Air operations will be based at Dulles International Airport, located outside of Washington, DC, though it will have facilities in Reykjavik and nearby Keflavik...

Google under antitrust investigation by 50 attorneys general

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton Announces Lawsuit Against Delaware Over Unclaimed Checks Photo by Gabriella Demczuk/Getty Images

On Monday, 50 attorneys general from US states and territories signed onto an antitrust investigation into Google, placing even more pressure on the major tech firms that are already facing intense scrutiny over their market dominance from the government.

The probe, led by Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton from Texas, will focus primarily on Google's advertising and search businesses. But in remarks given Monday, the attorneys general suggested that they may expand the investigation later.

California and Alabama are the only two state attorneys general staying out of the probe.

At Monday's press conference in front of the Supreme Court,...

Celeste’s massive new expansion is a good time to play the platforming masterpiece

Image: Extremely OK Games

The excellent indie game Celeste is coming to an end. Today sees the launch of the game's first, and final, expansion, appropriately titled Farewell. Game developer Matt Thorson, whose studio Matt Makes Games developed the title before rebranding as Extremely OK Games, designed the expansion to be one giant send-off: both for main character Madeline, and the players who've spent countless hours helping her traverse the titular mountain.

I haven't had a chance to sink into it quite yet. But early impressions have the roughly three-hour expansion as some of the most creative and challenging levels in the game set to all-new music from composer Lena Raine, who created some of the most memorable tracks from the original.

If you haven't yet...
