The reflections in a pop star’s eyes told a selfie stalker exactly how to find her Posted: 11 Oct 2019 06:05 PM PDT In September, a Japanese man was arrested for reportedly stalking a pop star and attacking and groping her at her home, according to Japanese news organization NHK. Allegedly, this man found the woman's home by studying photos she posted on social media, observing a train station reflected in her eyes, finding that train station using Google Street View, waiting for her at the train station, and following her home. The man also apparently learned more about where the woman lived by studying videos she posted from inside her apartment, observing her curtains and how light came through her windows. You may not be a pop star, but it's still a cautionary tale about how tiny details in your smartphone photos could be used to figure out one... |
Blizzard breaks its silence on controversial suspension of pro Hong Kong Hearthstone player Posted: 11 Oct 2019 05:32 PM PDT Photo by Maik Boenisch/Pacific Press/LightRocket via Getty Images Video game developer Blizzard Entertainment has finally broken its silence after banning a professional player of popular virtual card game Hearthstone for voicing support for the Hong Kong protests. In a lengthy statement, the company says it will reduce the one-year suspension of player Ng "Blitzchung" Wai Chung to a six-month one, and it will restore the prize money it withheld from him. Blizzard claims that its initial decision was not influenced by its relationship with China. "The specific views expressed by blitzchung were not a factor in the decision we made. I want to be clear: our relationships in China had no influence on our decision," writes J. Allen Brack, the president of Blizzard Entertainment. "We have these rules to... |
Telegram must halt sale of its crypto token due to an SEC emergency restraining order Posted: 11 Oct 2019 04:22 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge The US Securities and Exchange Commission has formally instructed Telegram Group, the parent company of the Telegram encrypted messaging service, to halt sales of its cryptocurrency Gram. The SEC says the company, and its crypto-focused subsidiary TON Issuer Inc., failed to register an early sale of $1.7 billion of its crypto tokens prior to the October 31st launch of its blockchain network. Because the SEC treats cryptocurrency as securities, the agency says Telegram is in violation of the Securities Act. "Our emergency action today is intended to prevent Telegram from flooding the US markets with digital tokens that we allege were unlawfully sold," writes Stephanie Avakian, the co-director of the SEC's Division of Enforcement, in a... |
El Camino adds no redemption to Breaking Bad, but ups the insight into Jesse Pinkman Posted: 11 Oct 2019 04:03 PM PDT Photo: Ben Rothstein / Netflix Writer-director Vince Gilligan brings an underlying confidence to nearly every moment of El Camino, the Breaking Bad sequel movie he made for Netflix. The carefully choreographed cinematography, Aaron Paul's raw and committed performance, Gilligan's faith that those who tune in will have keen memories for the details of his AMC series Breaking Bad — the Netflix original film successfully makes the case for its existence, even though it's two hours of content that didn't necessarily need to be made. It's not that audiences and critics are tired of revisiting Gilligan's nuanced examination of morality and corruption, as seen through the prism of Albuquerque's best and worst people. The spinoff series Better Call Saul has drawn a faithful... |
Why so many companies bailed on Facebook’s Libra project at once Posted: 11 Oct 2019 03:18 PM PDT Image: Facebook When Libra launched on June 18th, it seemed like an alarming new front in Facebook's megalomaniacal expansion. Having captured billions of users and tens of billions of dollars in annual profits, the company would now be taking over currency itself. The company's head of blockchain, David Marcus, laid out his plan for Libra in a detailed white paper, with some of the financial world's most powerful companies already signed on to help govern the new currency as part of the Libra Association. It was Facebook's vision for an international currency, and based on the company's partners, it seemed unstoppable. That was then. The first to ditch Libra was Paypal, which withdrew on October 4th. Then, over the course of a few hours on October... |
Andy Rubin has left his own incubator — but he’s still in the building Posted: 11 Oct 2019 02:18 PM PDT Asa Mathat Andy Rubin used to be primarily known as the "father of Android," but he's also becoming known for leaving companies amid scandal — in this case Playground Global, the tech incubator he founded after leaving Google in 2014. Rubin confirmed to The Verge today that he's no longer with the incubator, following a BuzzFeed report that he was "quietly shown the door." But that turn of phrase isn't quite appropriate — because Rubin's smartphone startup Essential happens to share the very same building as Playground Global in Palo Alto, California. The office has an open floor plan with few walls to speak of. "Yes, the Essential office is still located in the Playground space," an Essential spokesperson confirmed to The Verge. Rubin tells The... |
Facebook sued over Calibra’s look-alike logo Posted: 11 Oct 2019 01:17 PM PDT Image: Calibra Over the summer, Facebook unveiled its Libra cryptocurrency and the Calibra subsidiary that would help manage it. Facebook also unveiled a logo for Calibra and, well, it looks somewhat similar to the logo of Current, a startup bank. Apparently, Current agreed, so much so that it has filed a lawsuit against Facebook, alleging trademark infringement.
The suit names four defendants: Facebook, Calibra, a Facebook subsidiary that owns IP related to Calibra, and Character, the design agency that made the Calibra logo. You might be surprised to see a design agency named in the lawsuit — but Character apparently designed both... |
Nomad’s Base Station Pro wireless charger looks to succeed where AirPower failed Posted: 11 Oct 2019 01:13 PM PDT Apple's AirPower wireless charger was one of the company's most high-profile failures ever, but in the wake of its cancellation, plenty of companies have been trying to swoop in to fill the gap that Apple left. The latest is Nomad, whose new Base Station Pro wireless charger promises to offer the kind of versatile charger that Apple couldn't. The big promise of AirPower was a wireless charger that didn't need any exact placement — just drop up to three devices anywhere on the pad, and they would charge. That's exactly the thing that Nomad says its achieved with the Base Station Pro, which, instead of the usual three coils that you'd typically see on a triple-device wireless charger, features an 18-coil matrix. To pull this off, Nomad... |
Facebook’s Libra Association crumbling as Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, and others exit Posted: 11 Oct 2019 01:01 PM PDT Illustration by William Joel / The Verge Visa, Mastercard, eBay, Stripe, and Mercado Pago have all withdrawn from the Libra Association, dealing a major blow to Facebook's plans for a distributed, global cryptocurrency. The withdrawals were first reported by the Financial Times and Bloomberg. A Visa spokesperson told The Verge. "Visa has decided not to join the Libra Association at this time," the spokesperson said. "We will continue to evaluate and our ultimate decision will be determined by a number of factors, including the Association's ability to fully satisfy all requisite regulatory expectations." The withdrawals leave Libra with no major US payment processor, a serious issue for the fledgling project. They also come just one week after PayPal (eBay's former subsidiary) w... |
Succession’s creator wrote one of the best Black Mirror episodes Posted: 11 Oct 2019 11:35 AM PDT Photo: Netflix There are so many streaming options available these days, and so many conflicting recommendations, that it's hard to see through all the crap you could be watching. Each Friday, The Verge's Cut the Crap column simplifies the choice by sorting through the overwhelming multitude of movies and TV shows on subscription services, and recommending a single perfect thing to watch this weekend. What to watch"The Entire History of You," a season 1 episode of the science-fiction anthology series Black Mirror. The story is set in a near-future society where the hot technology is a skull implant that turns memories into first-person video clips, which people can either rewatch themselves or share with others. Toby Kebbell plays Liam Foxwell, a... |
