Does praying burn calories? Here’s the pope’s $110 e-rosary Posted: 17 Oct 2019 05:53 PM PDT The Vatican continues to take great pains to bring Catholic faith into the modern era, and this week it's transforming the faithful rosary — adapting today's popular fitness tracker idea into a $110 bracelet that tracks your prayers. No, we're not joking: this is a real gadget launched at a Vatican press conference whose specs include:
It's basically an adapted fitness tracker, and it still doubles as a fitness tracker, too: "Once the prayer begins, the smart rosary shows the user's progress throughout the different mysteries and keeps track of each rosary... |
Motorola teases its foldable RAZR phone reveal for November 13th Posted: 17 Oct 2019 03:25 PM PDT We heard early this year that Motorola would be bringing back its iconic RAZR handset as a pricy smartphone with a vertically folding screen, and in February the company confirmed it was working on a foldable for this year. Now, as CNET reports, the company has sent out invites for a November 13th event that prominently displays the unmistakable silhouette of a classic RAZR V3 as part of an animated teaser image: While it's hard to tell for sure, it certainly looks like we're seeing the RAZR's signature hinge pulled away from the edge of the handset to reveal a different sort of hinge underneath — perhaps to better house a true foldable screen like Samsung's Galaxy Fold. Motorola appears to have multiple taglines for the... |
Some of the UK’s phone number infrastructure relies on Yahoo Groups, which is shutting down Posted: 17 Oct 2019 03:06 PM PDT Image: Yahoo Yahoo Groups is about to shut down, and it's taking a lot of the old web with it. All content that had been posted there will be deleted by mid-December, and although it will be available for download before the end comes, the site will be largely shuttered by the end of this month. Because Yahoo didn't give the internet much warning, a lot of weird externalities of the company's decision are being worked out in public. One that's particularly surprising: the United Kingdom's phone system actually relies in part on a Yahoo group founded in 2002 — which I learned about through a tweet.

Google Maps on iOS will soon let you report speed traps and traffic slowdowns Posted: 17 Oct 2019 03:03 PM PDT Photo: Chris Welch / The Verge Since 2018, Google has slowly added ways to report incidents on the road like accidents, road closures, and traffic slowdowns — something made popular by Google-owned Waze — to Google Maps on Android. Starting this week, though, Google says Google Maps users on iOS will soon be able to report road incidents as well. In a blog post (via 9to5Google), Google says that iPhone users will be able to report those crashes, speed traps, and traffic slowdowns now too. To report an incident, you'll tap a new button under the compass in the driving navigation UI, as shown in this GIF: And iOS users aren't the only ones getting new reporting options — Google says that users on both platforms will be able to report construction, lane... |
California’s earthquake warning app: how it works and what comes next Posted: 17 Oct 2019 02:16 PM PDT Berkeley Seismological Laboratory Seconds before an earthquake hits anywhere in California, people nearby will now get a warning on their smartphones to duck and cover. The first state-wide early warning system in the nation launched today, on the 30th anniversary of the devastating Loma Prieta earthquake that killed 63 people in the San Francisco Bay Area. The early warning system will reach people in two ways: through an app called MyShake and through the existing wireless emergency alerts that sound an alarm on cellphones for flood warnings and missing children (Amber Alerts). If all goes well, it will give people up to "tens of seconds" of advance notice before they might feel the ground shaking. That's just enough time to save lives... |
The Switch turns Overwatch into a great second-screen game Posted: 17 Oct 2019 01:53 PM PDT Overwatch has finally made its way to the Nintendo Switch, fulfilling the endless requests from me that Blizzard port its popular team shooter to Nintendo's portable console. It's not the first mainstream shooter to make the jump to the Switch: Bethesda has ported Doom and a few Wolfenstein games, and of course there's Nintendo's own Splatoon series and the ubiquitous Fortnite. But as an exclusively online, multiplayer-based competitive team shooter, Overwatch might be the least likely fit for the Switch, at least on paper. I've spent the last day or two playing the Switch port, and at first glance, that impression is correct. As a way to play Overwatch seriously, the Switch port is bad. There's no other way to put it. If you're... |
Yahoo will give you an extra week to post on Yahoo Groups, says it will ‘listen to feedback’ Posted: 17 Oct 2019 01:29 PM PDT If you were saddened to hear that you will no longer be able to post to Yahoo Groups starting next week, cheer up — you've now got an extra week to post. Yahoo's plan to largely shut down Groups was widely publicized on October 16th, just days before the company was going to freeze uploads on October 21st. But today, the company told us that date is actually going to be a bit later, on October 28th. (It has also added the new date to its support document about the decision.) However, no matter when you post something to a group, it's still going to get deleted, as Yahoo is still removing all content hosted on Groups on December 14th. Yahoo Groups once served as a place for discussions on just about any niche topic you could think of, a... |
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare ditches loot boxes for a battle pass Posted: 17 Oct 2019 01:14 PM PDT Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is just days away from its October 25th release date, and Activision has finally announced how it'll be running the in-game economy for the upcoming shooter. Specifically, Modern Warfare will be the first Call of Duty game to use a battle pass system, instead of the much maligned random loot boxes, to dispense content and cosmetics to players. Popularized by Fortnite, the battle pass system allows for players to buy the pass at the beginning of the season, and unlock a variety of items as they progress. Modern Warfare's system sounds like it'll be extremely similar to the Fortnite model (which has since been adopted by other major titles, like Destiny 2 and PUBG). Players will be able to buy a pass at the... |
Newegg leaks Nvidia’s brand-new Shield TV streaming... tube Posted: 17 Oct 2019 12:26 PM PDT Nvidia can't be very happy with its online retail partners today. After Amazon leaked every detail about the upcoming Shield TV Pro, Newegg has now spoiled the reveal of a seemingly more mainstream Shield TV that also supports 4K playback with Dolby Vision. 9to5Google managed to save everything before Newegg wised up and removed the listing. Both streaming devices run Google's Android TV software. The first thing you'll notice about this one is definitely the form factor. Whereas the new flagship Shield TV Pro resembles Nvidia's old model, this device has a completely fresh cylindrical design. It measures 6.5 inches wide and 1.57 inches tall, according to Newegg. Nvidia has found room for HDMI, microSD, a figure-8 power jack, and even... |
Reddit-born engineering group buys leftovers of failed hyperloop startup Arrivo Posted: 17 Oct 2019 12:06 PM PDT Image: rLoop Reddit-born hyperloop and engineering collective rLoop has bought the intellectual property of Arrivo, a fellow hyperloop startup that went out of business last December, The Verge has learned. rLoop co-founder Brent Lessard confirmed the sale, but he would not disclose how much the group paid. Lessard said rLoop might try to revive some of the deals that Arrivo had been working on, like a test track outside of Denver, Colorado, and that it may hire back some of Arrivo's former employees. But, Lessard said, rLoop is still only in the "final stages" of assessing the progress Arrivo's employees had made toward developing a type of hyperloop that relies on magnetic levitation (as opposed to the vacuum-based solution that was originally... |
