Instagram gets the iOS 13 dark mode treatment and it’s wonderful Posted: 07 Oct 2019 05:32 PM PDT Screenshots by Nick Statt / The Verge Instagram has updated its iPhone app to take advantage of native dark mode support in iOS 13, and it makes scrolling through your feed and tapping through Stories much easier on the eyes if you're not a fan of Instagram's popping color palette and bright white borders. Unfortunately, for as nice as it looks, Instagram doesn't let you toggle the dark mode option on or off within the app itself, as Twitter's pre-iOS 13 addition of the feature does. That means it has to match your iPhone's system-wide settings, which is pretty standard right now as most iOS app makers are adding dark mode support for the first time. That said, it's always better to have more visual options, and I can't complain too much about an Instagram experience that... |
You need a MacBook with a butterfly keyboard to use macOS Catalina’s Sidecar Posted: 07 Oct 2019 04:52 PM PDT Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge Apple released macOS Catalina today, and one of the update's marquee features is Sidecar, which lets you use your iPad as a second display for your Mac laptop or desktop. The feature is designed to be a handy way to give yourself some extra screen real estate, especially if you regularly carry around both an iPad and an Apple laptop. The Verge's Dieter Bohn called it his favorite new feature on Catalina in our review. But there's a catch if you're excited to use Sidecar with your laptop: if you've been holding out on buying an Apple laptop without the troubled butterfly keyboard, you can't use Sidecar. According to an Apple white paper, the only laptops that Sidecar works on are:

Google now requires Digital Wellbeing and USB-C PD charging standard for new Android phones Posted: 07 Oct 2019 04:11 PM PDT Google introduced new guidelines that Android device makers must follow in order to use its services, according to a technical document obtained by XDA Developers. Of what we've seen so far, one of the more notable changes is that Google will require new Android devices to be compatible with USB-C PD chargers. USB-C PD is an open standard for USB-C that allows for fast charging speeds. But as is often the case with new standards, it's something that some manufacturers have skirted in favor of proprietary fast-charging methods. According to testing done by Android Authority, OnePlus' Warp Charge, Samsung's Fast Charge, and other technologies haven't played nicely with third-party accessories in the past. In order to get the advertised... |
The PS4’s Facebook integration comes to an abrupt end, but it should only be temporary Posted: 07 Oct 2019 04:11 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Sony today disabled the ability for PlayStation 4 owners to link the game console to their Facebook account. That in turn disabled the ability to use your Facebook profile photo as your official PlayStation Network avatar, the ability to find friends using your Facebook friends list, and the share features that let you transfer gameplay videos and screenshots. There was no warning of the change, and Sony's terse blog post on the subject offered no explanation. Instead, Sony writes, "We apologize for any inconvenience," and the company suggests using one of its provided video game avatars or uploading a new photo to replace your Facebook profile photo in the event you used that as the image for your PSN account. |
Apple is hiding Taiwan’s flag emoji if you’re in Hong Kong or Macau Posted: 07 Oct 2019 03:32 PM PDT When Apple released iOS 13.1.1 in late September, it appears to have dropped the Taiwan flag from the emoji keyboard for users that have their iOS region set to Hong Kong or Macau, as noticed by the blog Hiraku and later corroborated by Hong Kong Free Press. The Taiwan flag emoji isn't completely gone — apparently, it will still display in apps and on websites, and you can even still "type" it by either typing "Taiwan" in English and selecting it from Apple's next-word predictions or by copying and pasting it. Regardless, the removal is being treated by activists and pro-Hong Kong supporters as another attempt from mainland China to establish sovereignty over areas it considers under its control. Because of Taiwan's political status,... |
Genndy Tartakovsky’s dinosaur epic Primal turns compassion into a survival tool Posted: 07 Oct 2019 03:10 PM PDT In "Spear and Fang," the first episode of the new animated Adult Swim show Primal, the caveman Spear (Aaron LaPlante) sees his mate and young children devoured by a pack of horned dinosaurs. Later in the episode, he winds up fighting that same pack alongside a Tyrannosaurus dubbed Fang, and he befriends her two young children. It's a sweet redemptive moment, suggesting that Spear might be able to regain something of what he's lost. Then the leader of the dino pack shows up and eats the babies. Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory creator Genndy Tartakovsky designed Primal as a brutal show about survival in a fantastic version of prehistoric times, where early hominids, dinosaurs, ice age megafauna, and monstrous creatures that never... |
US blacklists Chinese surveillance companies over human rights abuses Posted: 07 Oct 2019 03:00 PM PDT FRED DUFOUR/AFP/Getty Images The United States is adding eight Chinese technology companies to its trading blacklist, barring some major producers of surveillance equipment from working with American companies. In a filing released Monday, the Commerce Department said it was adding 28 entities to the list that have been "implicated in human rights violations and abuses in the implementation of China's campaign of repression, mass arbitrary detention, and high-technology surveillance against Uighurs, Kazakhs, and other members of Muslim minority groups" in the country's Xinjian region. The listed entities include Chinese state security bureaus, as well as the eight companies. Those companies include Hikvision and Dahua... |
The NBA is afraid of offending China — and so are online platforms Posted: 07 Oct 2019 02:57 PM PDT Photo by Takashi Aoyama/Getty Images Late last week, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted his support for protesters in Hong Kong: "Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong." By this morning, however, he'd deleted the tweet and posted an apology — as Chinese companies pulled sponsorship over the message and Morey's employers reportedly considered firing him. This weekend's controversy wasn't unique — journalist Max Read listed companies that had apologized over slights like omitting Taiwan from a map of China on a t-shirt. But it was a microcosm of how companies struggle to deal with China's influence. And while this case involved one man posting a personal opinion online, it's particularly pertinent for companies that let millions of people post opinions and... |

Apple’s macOS Catalina update is a big problem for DJs who relied on iTunes Posted: 07 Oct 2019 01:36 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Apple's latest desktop operating system update, macOS Catalina, will mark the official end of iTunes after nearly two decades. But that transition is proving to be complicated for a certain subset of Mac users who've relied on the software to help manage their jobs: DJs. According to Apple, along with Catalina's removal of iTunes, users are also losing XML file support as all native music playback on Macs moves over to the official Music app, which has a new library format. XML file support is a popular organizational feature for DJs who use it to sort tracks into playlists and utilize the "Share iTunes Library XML with other applications" option to seamlessly transmit data between apps. |
