Disney+ crashed on launch day because its software wasn’t ready for the demand Posted: 19 Nov 2019 05:05 PM PST Photo: Lucasfilm / Disney On Disney+'s first day, its initial 10 million subscribers were hit with a series of outages. The company says this was because of high demand and the way engineers "architected the app." Ahead of the launch, Disney executives thought they would be ok. Michael Paull, head of Disney Streaming Services, told The Verge in August that years of handling big streams (like Game of Thrones premieres and finales) prepared the team for a launch of this size. It didn't. New subscribers couldn't log in to the app; if they managed to get in, streaming was nearly impossible. People thought it might be issues with Amazon or third-party platforms carrying the app, but Kevin Mayer, head of Disney's direct to consumer division, denied those rumors. "It... |
Star Trek 4 eyes Fargo, Legion creator Noah Hawley to direct Posted: 19 Nov 2019 04:53 PM PST After a three-year silence, there has been news on the fourth film in rebooted Star Trek film series: Noah Hawley, best known for creating FX's Legion and Fargo TV series, is in final talks to write and direct it, according to reports from The Wrap and Deadline. The most recent Star Trek film was 2016's Star Trek Beyond. Unlike the original two films in the modern iteration of the franchise, Star Trek Beyond was directed by Justin Lin; 2009's Star Trek and 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness were directed by J.J. Abrams. Abrams was a producer on Star Trek Beyond, and will be reprising the role in the as-yet-untitled fourth film. The fourth Star Trek film was greenlit in 2016, with reports that Chris... |
Google keeps face-planting on the small stuff with latest Stadia launch gaffe Posted: 19 Nov 2019 03:30 PM PST Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge On June 6th, Google opened up preorders for the $130 "Founder's Edition" of its Stadia cloud gaming service, promising those buyers would be the first to experience the future of gaming — and reserve a unique username. Though Stadia is now live, many buyers are reporting they haven't received the most crucial piece of the entire Stadia package: the invite email that opens the door to actually let them in. Many on Stadia's official Discord server are performing what they're calling a "code check" to let others know whether their codes have been sent, and whether their devices have actually been shipped. Others are reporting the usernames they wanted are already taken. On Reddit, Google said it was investigating the issue:

Verizon finally reveals actual 5G coverage maps Posted: 19 Nov 2019 03:08 PM PST Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg | Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge Verizon is addressing one of the biggest criticisms about the company's growing 5G network: a lack of traditional coverage maps. As noted by PC Mag, today the carrier has finally published maps where customers in 5G cities can get lightning-quick data speeds (over 1Gbps in some cases) from its millimeter-wave technology. Earlier today, Verizon launched 5G in Boston, Houston, and Sioux Falls. Service is now available in 18 cities, and the company says it will reach 30 by the end of 2019. Verizon continues to claim that it's putting 5G "in locations where more people can experience ultra-fast speeds together" — near landmarks and high-traffic areas of each market. Recently, it brought 5G to sections of football stadiums. Here's what the... |
Apple preparing to build the ‘next generation of media apps for Windows’ Posted: 19 Nov 2019 02:59 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Apple is hunting for software engineers to help the company build media apps for Windows. The iPhone maker revealed its plans in a job listing earlier this month, spotted by Neowin, inviting potential candidates to "join us and build the next generation of media apps for Windows." Apple maintains existing Windows apps like iTunes and iCloud, but these are both old traditional desktop apps that are showing their age. Apple revealed earlier this year that it's breaking up iTunes into three separate macOS apps: Podcasts, TV, and Music. None of these apps have arrived on Windows, leaving PC users with just iTunes. If you're an Apple Music or Apple TV Plus subscriber, you have to use the web versions instead of dedicated apps on Windows 10... |
Amazon lets police ask for Ring videos that are more than a month old Posted: 19 Nov 2019 02:49 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Amazon's Ring home security company lets police ask users for videos that are up to 45 days old and 12 hours long, Amazon said in a letter released today. Ring has been the source of privacy concerns for months, as the company, which offers doorbell cameras, faces questions about how it works with law enforcement. The home security business has partnered with hundreds of police agencies around the United States, giving a way for officials to request customer footage through Amazon, with users' approval. Those reports prompted Sen. Edward Markey (D-MA) to ask Amazon for more information on Ring's privacy practices. Today, Markey released Amazon's responses. To ask for video footage, the company... |
Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro has a mysterious new ‘lid angle sensor’ Posted: 19 Nov 2019 02:36 PM PST Image: iFixit Apple's new 16-inch MacBook Pro not only has a bigger screen, but it returns to a scissor switch keyboard, has louder speakers, a better mic, and a... lid angle sensor? MacRumors found the mention of the new sensor in a service document that was sent to Apple Authorized Service Providers. It shared the info with iFixit, which found the small sensor inside the computer and also noticed that the MacBook Pro's hinge has a magnet inside it with an arrow that indicates the hinge's polarity. But that's as much as we concretely know about the lid angle sensor. Based entirely on the name, it seems likely that the sensor can track the exact angle of the lid in some way. iFixit also speculated that the sensor helps keep a history of how much the... |
Uber is at fault for fatal self-driving crash, but it’s not alone Posted: 19 Nov 2019 01:46 PM PST Image: ABC 15 Federal investigators split the blame for the fatal Uber self-driving crash between the ride-hailing company, the safety driver in the vehicle, the victim, and the state of Arizona in a blistering official report that also took the federal government to task for failing to properly regulate the industry. In a hearing of the National Transportation Safety Board in Washington, DC on November 19th, the three-member panel heard from a team of investigators who had been sifting through the details of the crash for over a year now. At the end of the two-and-a-half-hour hearing, the board issued its determination of probable cause in the event that shook the autonomous vehicle industry. The board cited the following as contributing to the... |
