Here are AT&T’s first real consumer 5G coverage maps Posted: 22 Nov 2019 05:49 PM PST AT&T announced today that its 5G network will launch in the first half of December. You can use it if you've got a compatible Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G, one of two unlimited plans, and are fortunate enough to live in one of the five cities where it will be available at launch — or ten cities that will get 5G by early next year. Now, AT&T has also shared its initial 5G coverage maps, and we've included them all in this post. AT&T claims it has two kinds of 5G already, but this third one is the real deal, sort of.

OnePlus discloses data breach, less than two years after the last one Posted: 22 Nov 2019 03:41 PM PST Photo by Jon Porter / The Verge OnePlus has suffered a data breach: the company says an "unauthorized party" accessed some customers' order information. In a statement, OnePlus says some customer names, contact numbers, emails, and shipping addresses "may have been exposed," but also that "all payment information, passwords and accounts are safe." The company began notifying affected customers today. In an FAQ, the company says the breach was discovered last week, and that it has "inspected our website thoroughly to ensure that there are no similar security flaws." That suggests the breach happened through the OnePlus website, perhaps the online store, rather than its phones. The company said that it took "immediate steps to stop the intruder and reinforce security"... |
Some T-Mobile prepaid customers had their account information breached Posted: 22 Nov 2019 02:17 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge On Thursday, T-Mobile disclosed a security breach that impacted some of its prepaid customers in the United States. The company told Bleeping Computer on Thursday that a "small number of customers" were affected by the breach that was discovered earlier this month. According to T-Mobile, customer names, addresses, phone numbers, account numbers, rate plans, and plan features were all left exposed. More sensitive information like passwords, financial information, or social security numbers were not affected. T-Mobile told the impacted customers this week that its cybersecurity team "discovered and shut down malicious, unauthorized access" to their accounts. Shortly after, the... |
Apple’s first big TV Plus theatrical release is delayed following controversy Posted: 22 Nov 2019 01:58 PM PST Image: Apple Apple is delaying the theatrical release of its upcoming feature film The Banker following sexual misconduct allegations leveled about Bernard Garrett Jr., the son of the character depicted by Anthony Mackie in the film. "We purchased The Banker earlier this year as we were moved by the film's entertaining and educational story about social change and financial literacy," an Apple representative said in a statement to The Verge, echoing what the company previously said. "Last week some concerns surrounding the film were brought to our attention. We, along with the filmmakers, need some time to look into these matters and determine the best next steps. In light of this, we are no longer premiering The Banker at AFI Fest." The theatrical... |
‘The time is now to have a federal privacy bill,’ says Tim Cook Posted: 22 Nov 2019 12:10 PM PST Photo credit should read SAUL LOEB/AFP via Getty Images Congress has been struggling for years to pass a federal data privacy law, but on Friday, lawmakers gained an unexpected ally in Apple CEO Tim Cook. In an interview with ABC News, the executive said big tech companies haven't corrected their mistakes, and it's time for the government to step in — ideally with a federal privacy bill. "I think we can all admit that when you've tried to do something and companies haven't self policed, that it's time to have rigorous regulation," he explained, "and I think we've passed that time." But while many are focused on splitting up companies like Facebook into separate, smaller entities, Cook also said regulators are too focused on antitrust action and not focused enough on data privacy. Breaking up... |

The Verge reacts to Half-Life: Alyx Posted: 22 Nov 2019 11:25 AM PST After 12 long years, there's finally going to be a new Half-Life game, and it's exclusive to VR. Half-Life: Alyx is due to arrive in March 2020 for a wide array of PC VR headsets, but none with traditional flat screens, mice, and keyboards. Is it the killer app VR has been waiting for and the fulfillment of Half-Life fans' dreams? Or is it merely a bump in the road? Here's what a savvy selection of The Verge's staff thinks about that. Michael Moore, reviews coordinator: The question that keeps coming to mind after seeing Half-Life: Alyx is: can Valve save VR? Not that VR is somehow dying, but the hype from a few years ago seems to have completely dissipated. We're to the point where it seems as though VR is no longer the next big thing... |
Electric Citi Bikes are coming back to NYC this winter Posted: 22 Nov 2019 11:12 AM PST The return of the electric Citi Bike is nigh! Several thousand pedal-assist electric bikes were yanked from service last April after "dozens" of people were injured due to harder-than-expected brakes. But now the brakes are fixed, and hundreds of e-bikes will begin appearing at docking stations across the city starting this winter. The news follows a similar announcement that e-bikes are coming back to San Francisco, after a couple battery fires put those bikes out of service, too. New York City's Citi Bike and San Francisco's Bay Wheels are both operated by Motivate, a national bike-share company owned by Lyft. Citi Bike says it has redesigned the bikes' brake setup, and is now working with a different battery supplier. |
Google is shutting down its Cloud Print feature in 2020 Posted: 22 Nov 2019 10:34 AM PST Illustration: Alex Castro / The Verge Google has announced that Cloud Print, which lets you easily print things from the web using Google Chrome (even on printers that lack an internet connection), will print its final pages on December 31st, 2020. 9to5Google reported on the news. Cloud Print has been a handy service, as it works both on desktop and mobile and gives extended utility to older printers. Interestingly, despite being introduced back in 2010, Google Cloud Print still has a beta tag. In a support document, Google recommends using the printing experience that's baked into Chrome OS or, if you're on a different OS, using "the respective platform's native printing infrastructure." Some Twitter users are mourning the death of Cloud Print, which is probably part of... |
