Facebook built a chatbot to help employees deflect criticism over the holidays Posted: 02 Dec 2019 05:06 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Facebook's public image is in such a disastrous state that the company's public relations team built an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot to help its employees deflect criticism from family members over the holidays, reports The New York Times. The tool, called "Liam Bot" for reasons the company has not disclosed, helps walk employees through tough conversations about Facebook's various controversies. The tool was rolled out to employees shortly before the US Thanksgiving holiday, the NYT reports, and it first entered testing back in the spring. The answers are written by the company's public relations team and largely appear to align with executive team's public statements on topics like free speech, election meddling,... |
YouTube’s new gaming policy will allow creators to produce more violent footage Posted: 02 Dec 2019 03:39 PM PST Robin L Marshall/Getty Images A new YouTube policy taking effect today, December 2nd, will allow creators with a focus on gaming to upload videos that contain simulated violence without worrying about being automatically hit by age-restriction gates. The company's new policy for gaming is already how YouTube treats other scripted entertainment formats, like television and movies. It will allow future gaming videos that include scripted or simulated violence to possibly be approved directly without an age-gate. That means those videos will be open to everyone, not just those with an account stating they're over the age of 18. If the violence is extreme and the sole focus of a video, like a finishing move in Mortal Kombat, the video may still be age-gated. Overall,... |
Amazon is now offering quantum computing as a service Posted: 02 Dec 2019 03:20 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Google and IBM may be battling for quantum supremacy, but Amazon is currently happy to be a middleman — today, it's announcing and launching a preview of Amazon Braket, its attempt to turn the nascent field of quantum computing into a service you can access over the internet, a month after Microsoft did something similar. "Amazon Braket is a fully managed AWS service, with security & encryption baked in at each level," the company explains in a blog post. For now, it sounds like a pretty limited affair, where "you" will mean Amazon's corporate customers, and where "service" means the ability to experiment by running simulations on a set of existing quantum computers from partners D-Wave, IonQ, and Rigetti. (IonQ is also a Microsoft Azure... |
NASA spacecraft finds crash site of Indian lunar lander Posted: 02 Dec 2019 02:34 PM PST A NASA spacecraft in orbit around the Moon spotted the crash site of India's ill-fated lunar lander, Vikram, which slammed into the Moon's surface during a landing attempt in September. Images taken by the spacecraft confirm that the lander met an explosive end, revealing the lander's impact site and the surrounding debris created by the accident. Part of India's Chandrayaan-2 mission to the Moon, Vikram was supposed to be the first Indian spacecraft to touch down gently on the lunar surface. India had put a vehicle on the Moon before, but that spacecraft purposefully slammed into the ground, kicking up lunar dirt and allowing researchers to learn more about the kinds of materials lurking on the Moon. With Vikram, India hoped to put a... |

Would background checks make dating apps safer? Posted: 02 Dec 2019 01:58 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Match Group, the largest dating app conglomerate in the US, doesn't perform background checks on any of its apps' free users. A ProPublica report today highlights a few incidents in which registered sex offenders went on dates with women who had no idea they were talking to a convicted criminal. These men then raped the women on their dates, leaving the women to report them to the police and to the apps' moderators. These women expected their dating apps to protect them, or at least vet users, only to discover that Match has little to no insight on who's using their apps. The piece walks through individual attacks and argues that the apps have no real case for not vetting their users. The reporting positions Match as a company interested... |
Riot Games will pay $10 million in discrimination settlement Posted: 02 Dec 2019 01:12 PM PST Illustrations by Alex Castro / The Verge League of Legends publisher Riot Games will pay at least $10 million under a legal settlement with current and former female employees, following accusations of gender-based discrimination and sexual harassment at the company. The Los Angeles Times writes that Riot will compensate around 1,000 women who worked there between November 2014 and the present, with the dollar amount varying based on their time at the company. Court documents note that the two class representatives, Jessica Negron and Gabriela Downie, will each receive $10,000. After attorney costs and other fees, around $6.2 million is expected to go toward payouts for the other employees — full employees will get a minimum of $2,500, and temporary contractors will get at... |

Apple’s rumored Mini-LED iPad and MacBook Pro could arrive in 2020 Posted: 02 Dec 2019 11:32 AM PST Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Apple has been rumored to be working on an iPad and MacBook featuring Mini-LED displays for months, and a new research note from noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has now put a date on when to expect them: late 2020, via 9to5Mac. Kuo had originally broke the rumor that Apple was working on laptops and tablets with the new screen technology earlier this year, but at that time, he put the date as either 2020 or 2021. The new research note pins that down, predicting that Apple will release both an iPad Pro and a 16-inch MacBook Pro with Mini-LED screens as early as the end of next year. According to Kuo's note, the iPad Pro update will come earlier, in Q3 2020, and also feature an updated A14X processor (presumably an iPad-specific version of... |
Internet celebrity cat Lil Bub has died Posted: 02 Dec 2019 11:12 AM PST Lil Bub, the internet celebrity cat who brought joy to millions of fans, has died. Her owner, Mike Bridavsky, announced her death on social media today in a post celebrating her life and influence on animal welfare and research for special needs pets. She passed peacefully in her sleep, at eight years old. Born as the runt of her litter with a form of feline dwarfism, Lil Bub's genetic mutations gave her the unique features of looking like a permanent kitten, and a toothless jaw that left her tongue adorably hanging out. She's been the subject of a genetic research campaign to better understand gene mutations, and helped raise over $700,000 for animals in need through partnerships with organizations like the ASPCA.
