If you still aren’t convinced Big Brother can see you, here’s where Trump has gone Posted: 20 Dec 2019 02:55 PM PST Image: Alex Castro / The Verge Yesterday, The New York Times exposed in chilling detail how smartphones now mean practically anyone can be precisely tracked and identified in real time without their knowledge or permission. Today, the publication is driving that home with a particularly stunning example: tracking the President of the United States using the movements of his Secret Service agents, and other government officials, too.

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 01:03 PM PST Illustration by Corey Brickley for The Verge Welcome to the final episode of The Vergecast for 2019. On today's docket, we've got a deep dive into the lives of YouTube moderators, plans for the biggest smart home standards to unite under one banner, and Microsoft's surprise announcement of the Xbox Series X. In the first half of the show, Silicon Valley editor Casey Newton joins to talk about his continuing reporting on the lives of online content moderators with a recent feature that spoke to employees from Google and YouTube about how viewing violent content for a living has impacted their lives, potentially giving them PTSD. The second half of the show, Nilay Patel, Dieter Bohn, and Paul Miller discuss the announcement that Apple, Amazon, Google, Samsung, and others have joined... |
YouTubers physically fighting each other could become a regular event Posted: 20 Dec 2019 12:54 PM PST Jake Paul is the latest YouTuber to get his own boxing special. If the team behind the growing sports streaming platform Dazn is right, it'll be more than a one-time event. Following the successful rematch between his brother, Logan Paul, and fellow YouTuber KSI earlier this year, Jake is the next creator Dazn thinks can pull in a sizable audience. Jake Paul will fight YouTuber and boxer Ali "AnEsonGib" Gib in the penultimate match of a special boxing event on the eve of Super Bowl weekend in Miami, Florida. The full event has three world fights, including a headliner match between Demetrius Andrade and Luke Keeler. If it draws new viewers, Dazn has plans to team up with more creators and pit them against each other in the boxing ring —... |
New Samsung Galaxy Buds appear to be on the way, and they might have better battery life Posted: 20 Dec 2019 12:14 PM PST Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Filings for what appear to be a new set of Samsung Galaxy Buds have hit the FCC, indicating that a new version of Samsung's wireless earbuds might be arriving soon — and the filings have a tantalizing piece of information that might indicate improved battery life (via Droid Life). In a diagram of where the required FCC labeling may appear on the new Galaxy Buds, you can see that each bud may have a capacity of "300mA," and that the case may have a capacity of "600mA." That could theoretically mean up to triple the battery life for each bud over the Galaxy Buds on the market today, and a slight improvement in battery life for the case. You shouldn't... |
Iron Man 2 was one of Marvel Studios’ biggest failures this decade, but it set up a legacy Posted: 20 Dec 2019 12:00 PM PST Marvel Studios 2019 is coming to a close, and with it comes the end of the decade. Prestige TV has never been better. Marvel turned on-screen superheroes into the biggest (and most profitable) trend of the era. Streaming is the new battlefield for viewer eyeballs. To close out the 20-teens, Verge staffers break down their favorite moments, media, and what they believe was the most overlooked in entertainment from the last 10 years. I'm not here to convince you Iron Man 2 is a good movie. It's a pointless endeavor. Instead, I want to look back at the Marvel movie that kicked off the 2010s, and its impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iron Man 2 is a story about legacy. The whole thing is chaotic, ambitious, messy, and trying to figure itself out.... |
Facebook and Twitter shutter pro-Trump network reaching 55 million accounts Posted: 20 Dec 2019 11:04 AM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge On Friday, Facebook and Twitter shut down a network of fake accounts that pushed pro-Trump messages all while "masquerading" as Americans with AI-generated faces as profile photos. In a blog post, Facebook said that it connected the accounts to a US-based media company called The BL that, it claims, has ties to Epoch Media Group. In August, NBC News first reported that Epoch Media Group was pushing messages in support of President Donald Trump across social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Epoch has extensive connections to Falun Gong, an eccentric Chinese spiritual community that has faced significant persecution from the country's central government. While the Epoch Times denied any connection to The BL in a statement to T... |

Today’s deals include Echo Show bundles, iPads, and MacBooks Posted: 20 Dec 2019 10:38 AM PST Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge If you've been putting off your holiday shopping, there are even more deals available now on popular phones, tablets, and laptops. While a lot of these will make for great last-minute holiday gifts, not all of these are expected to arrive before the holidays, as we're cutting it close. Target's items won't ship before Christmas, but most Best Buy, B&H Photo and Amazon orders are expected to arrive by the holiday. Best Buy is offering even more deals. Among those are two smart display bundles. The Echo Show 8 is $50 off and includes an Echo Dot (third-gen), which was originally priced at $49.99. That brings the total price for the two items down to $79.99. You can also get two Echo... |
Vaping-associated lung injuries can be attributed to vitamin E acetate, CDC says Posted: 20 Dec 2019 10:21 AM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge The outbreak of vaping-associated lung injuries this summer and fall can officially be attributed to vitamin E acetate in THC-containing vaping products, the Centers for Disease Control said today. The new confirmation of the link between the chemical and the injuries came after a new study found it in nearly all of the lung fluid samples from a new set of patients. As of December 17, 2,506 people have been hospitalized with e-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI), according to the CDC. There have been 54 deaths. The injuries started increasing in June before peaking in September, new CDC data indicates, and the number of visits to emergency departments for vaping-associated injuries have been declining since.... |
Motorola slightly delays Razr preorder and launch timing due to high demand Posted: 20 Dec 2019 10:00 AM PST Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Motorola's resurrected foldable Razr was one of the most exciting phone announcements in 2019, but it seems that demand for the upcoming phone was higher than the company expected. Because of that demand, Motorola has announced a slight delay for both the preorder and launch of the Razr, which were originally planned for December 26th and sometime in January, respectively. There's no word yet when the new dates for preorders and launch timing will be, although the fact that Motorola is saying it doesn't "anticipate a significant shift from our original availability timeline" would seem to indicate that the delay will be small. Based on Motorola's statement, it seems the company is looking to avoid a scenario where customers who want to... |
