Nintendo brings more SNES and NES games to Switch, including Star Fox 2 Posted: 04 Dec 2019 06:23 PM PST Photo by Andrew Webster / The Verge Nintendo is adding the first new retro games to its Nintendo Switch Online service since the program expanded to include Super Nintendo titles. The most notable new addition is Star Fox 2, the long-lost Star Fox sequel that Nintendo dug out of its archives for the SNES Classic Edition mini console. Other SNES games added to Nintendo Switch Online include Super Punch-Out!!, Kirby Super Star, and Capcom RPG Breath of Fire II. Two more NES games are also joining the lineup: Sunsoft's run-and-gun shooter Journey to Silius, and SNK's action-adventure Crystalis. All will be available on December 12th. The new additions bring Nintendo Switch Online to a total of 24 SNES games and 50 NES games. The first SNES titles were added in September,... |

TikTok’s parent company sued for collecting data on kids Posted: 04 Dec 2019 02:02 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, is being sued after allegedly violating child privacy laws and collecting the data of young users through the video app, which was formerly called Musical.ly. ByteDance acquired Musical.ly in 2017, which it later rebranded as the enormously popular social video app TikTok. According to the December 3rd complaint, ByteDance has collected data from Musical.ly users under the age of 13 without their parents' explicit consent "since at least 2014" and sold the data to third-party advertisers. The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA, forbids social media companies from collecting the data of children without explicit parental consent. Failing to obtain that consent would be in violation of... |
Frozen 2’s biggest song, Into the Unknown, is now available on YouTube Posted: 04 Dec 2019 01:16 PM PST The full clip of "Into the Unknown," the big musical number from Frozen 2 performed by Idina Menzel and Aurora, is now available to watch on YouTube in full. That should be great news for kids who can't get enough of the sequel's version of "Let It Go," and it's terrifying news for parents who will surely have to endure the song on loop for the rest of their lives. It's only been about two weeks since Frozen 2 was released in theaters, but Disney is hoping viral magic will strike twice by uploading the full clip of the song now. The timing is similar to 2013, when the studio uploaded "Let It Go" in full on YouTube a week and a half after Frozen was released, a strategy that paid off in a massive way. The worldwide success of "Let It... |
Why Rian Johnson wanted to make Knives Out a modern-day whodunit Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:42 PM PST Illustration by Grayson Blackmon / The Verge; Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / Getty Images Rian Johnson's new film Knives Out is a devoted love letter to the whodunit genre — from its Poirot-esque detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig with an over-the-top Southern drawl, to its apparent murder victim Harlan Thrombey, an aging mystery author who "practically lives in a Clue board." But it's also a sharply contemporary project, not an Agatha Christie period piece. Even as Knives Out creates a familiar cozy atmosphere, it draws on present-day archetypes and culture-war conflicts, sketching a modern American family whose motives for murder are instantly recognizable. For Rian Johnson, who wrote and directed Knives Out after working on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, breaking the whodunit's comforting and familiar elements out... |
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765 chip could usher in the first affordable 5G phones Posted: 04 Dec 2019 11:56 AM PST Image: Qualcomm Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 865 might be the big news out of the company's annual Snapdragon Tech Summit, but the company also announced details about its other new chip, the midrange Snapdragon 765. The 765 might actually be the more interesting of the two, thanks to its integrated 5G modem and its likely future of powering cheaper, midrange devices. Right now, there's not a lot of 5G devices out there, and the ones that are around tend to be very expensive. The upcoming 865 might help with that. By default, it'll only work with the X55 5G modem, meaning every Android flagship with a Snapdragon 865 (i.e., nearly all of them) will, in theory, be a 5G phone next year. But even cheaper Android phones with Qualcomm's top processor tend... |
BMW reverses decision to charge vehicle owners an annual fee to use Apple CarPlay Posted: 04 Dec 2019 11:38 AM PST Harman BMW has backtracked on its controversial decision to charge an annual fee for the use of Apple's CarPlay in its vehicles, according to 9to5Mac. Since 2016, the German automaker has required owners to pay extra to use CarPlay — first as a one-time $300 option and then later as an $80-a-year fee. Now it appears that BMW has seen the error of its ways. It was a questionable decision from the start, considering no other automaker makes its customers pay for the use of CarPlay. A BMW spokesperson noted that the change will apply to both US-based and UK-based customers. Anyone who owns 2019 or 2020 model year vehicles and current BMW-Apple CarPlay subscribers will shortly no longer have to pay for a monthly or annual subscription, the... |
Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 865 promises 5G, camera, and gaming improvements Posted: 04 Dec 2019 11:03 AM PST Qualcomm officially announced its latest flagship processor, the Snapdragon 865, yesterday at its Snapdragon Tech Summit. But at the day two keynote, the company dove deep into all the details about the new chip and what it'll offer for the next wave of top tier Android devices next year. Qualcomm says that the new Snapdragon 865 will offer a wide variety of improvements over its existing chips, specifically when it comes to performance, AI processing, photography, and gaming. Connectivity and performanceClearly, 5G is a huge focus area for Qualcomm here. There's not a lot of news here, given that Qualcomm detailed the X55 modem that will be paired with the Snapdragon 865 months ago. (The first phones with an X55, the T-Mobile and A... |
NASA spacecraft unraveling Sun’s mysteries as it spirals closer to our star Posted: 04 Dec 2019 10:50 AM PST In August of last year, NASA sent a spacecraft hurtling toward the inner Solar System, with the aim of getting some answers about the mysterious star at the center of our cosmic neighborhood. Now more than a year later, that tiny robot has started to decode some of the mysteries surrounding our Sun's behavior, after venturing closer to our parent star than any human-made object has before. That spacecraft is NASA's Parker Solar Probe, a car-sized vehicle designed to withstand temperatures of more then 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. Its various instruments are protected by an extra hardy heat shield, designed to keep the spacecraft relatively cool as it gets near our balmy host star. Already, the Parker Solar Probe has gotten up close and... |
The Nintendo Switch had its best US sales week ever thanks to Black Friday Posted: 04 Dec 2019 10:36 AM PST Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Black Friday was a bright spot for Nintendo this year. Today, the company announced that the Thanksgiving holiday week was its biggest sales week ever for the Nintendo Switch in the US. According to Nintendo, between November 24th and 30th, the company sold 830,000 units combined of both the original Switch and the recently launched Switch Lite. Sales were bolstered not only by the new hardware and games like Pokémon Sword and Shield (which have sold 3 million copies in the Americas since launch), but also Black Friday deals, which included a Switch console bundled with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. All together, the Switch has sold 17.5 million units in the US alone. Back in October, Nintendo revealed that the device had sold more than 41... |
