We still don’t know how many people watched The Irishman on Netflix Posted: 06 Dec 2019 03:00 PM PST Netflix didn't have plans to release numbers for The Irishman when asked by The Verge earlier this week, but ratings firm Nielsen beat the streamer to the punch. Nielsen reports that "an average minute audience of nearly 13.2 million viewers with a reach of over 17.1 million unique U.S. viewers" watched The Irishman within the first five days of its release. That's better than El Camino, the Breaking Bad movie that debuted to 11 million views, but didn't do as well as the meme-fueled Bird Box, which saw 26 million views within the same time frame. Nielsen isn't a complete measure of viewing data as it doesn't take into account global views (where the majority of Netflix's subscriber base is), nor are these official Netflix numbers.... |
Elon Musk wins Twitter defamation trial brought by caver Vernon Unsworth Posted: 06 Dec 2019 02:35 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Elon Musk's tweets calling caver Vernon Unsworth, who was involved in the rescue of 13 people from a cave in Thailand, a "pedo guy" do not meet the legal standard for defamation, a jury found Friday afternoon. As a result, Musk will not be liable for damages. The decision had to do with defamation law as the judge had laid it out. There were five points: first, that the statements had to be made to a person other than Unsworth; second, that the statements had to be understood to be about Unsworth; third, that the statements had to be understood to mean Unsworth was a pedophile; fourth, that the statements were false; and fifth, that the statements were reckless. "As soon as we got to point two, which was about being acquainted [with... |
Truth Be Told doesn’t know how to make a murderer Posted: 06 Dec 2019 01:56 PM PST Truth Be Told should be a home run. Its premise — the story of a podcaster revisiting a murder case 20 years after a suspect has been incarcerated — immediately evokes Serial. The pilot, which showcases what appears to be a coerced minor's testimony, might as well mention Making A Murderer by name. These are popular, compelling true crime stories, and Truth Be Told is out to recreate the thrills of the genre through fiction. Truth Be Told is the latest original series from Apple TV Plus. Poppy Parnell (Octavia Spencer) is a true crime podcaster returning to the case of Warren Cave (Aaron Paul), a man convicted of murdering his neighbor when he was a teenager. Poppy has reason to believe that Warren might be innocent, but she's also got... |
Nokia’s first branded smart TV just made its debut Posted: 06 Dec 2019 01:27 PM PST Photo courtesy Flipkart When the brand "Nokia" is mentioned, most of us immediately think "phone." This is pretty much what it is known for. However, it looks like the company is branching out — or, at least, it's licensing its name to third-party retailers to branch out for it. As reported by Gadgets 360, Indian company Flipkart has been granted the use of the Nokia brand for its smart TVs — "a global first for the brand in the TV category," according to Flipkart itself, which is a major e-commerce retailer in the country. Vipul Mehrotra, Flipkart's VP of Nokia brand partnerships, adds, "Flipkart's understanding of the needs and behaviors of Indian consumers, and the power of its reach, will help it make Nokia branded smart TVs accessible and affordable." If... |
Cyber Week sales are still going: iPad Pro, Dell laptops, Nintendo Switch Lite, and more deals Posted: 06 Dec 2019 01:16 PM PST Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge As Cyber Week draws to a close, and retailers begin their sales leading up to the holidays, deals are coming and going quickly. In this transition between sales season, we've picked out a few worthwhile deals, and we'll be updating our coverage to bring you more as the next season of deals kicks off. And some of these deals are even better than the Black Friday and Cyber Monday savings. Best Buy is offering sizable discounts on the 11-inch models of the latest iPad Pro. The savings range from $150 to $200 and each purchase comes with a free year of Apple TV Plus. We didn't see any major deals on any iPad Pros over Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but we have seen these... |
Big data may not be enough to predict injuries in the NFL Posted: 06 Dec 2019 12:55 PM PST Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images The NFL is hoping big data tools can help bring down the number of concussions, ligament tears, and other injuries sustained in each game of professional football. Currently, the injury count per game is holding steady at an average of six or seven. League engineers are working with Amazon Web Services to apply machine learning and artificial intelligence tools to player data, with the hope of finding in-game situations that commonly lead to injury, The Wall Street Journal reported this week. "Ultimately, we will be able to identify injury risk scenarios, and we will be able to predict injury risk scenarios, and we will be able to find innovations that will make the game safer for our athletes while maintaining high quality of play,"... |
Adobe is buying the Oculus Medium VR sculpting app Posted: 06 Dec 2019 11:44 AM PST Adobe is acquiring Oculus Medium, a virtual reality sculpting tool originally revealed by the Facebook-owned VR company in 2015. Nothing is apparently changing for now — an Oculus blog post notes that Medium will remain free for people with an Oculus VR system. But it suggests that Adobe will bring "more features, improvements, and other developments" to Medium in 2020. Sébastien Deguy, Adobe's 3D and immersive content head, says Medium will complement Adobe's existing Substance app for 3D texturing. Medium was launched as a mass-market art tool, but as Oculus notes, it's been used by game developers, concept artists, and other ideal Adobe customers. Deguy and the Medium team both mention wanting to preserve Medium's existing community.... |
Here’s the leaked memo in which Away tells employees not to fave The Verge’s investigation Posted: 06 Dec 2019 11:37 AM PST Alex Castro / The Verge Newly leaked documents reveal that Away has barred employees from discussing The Verge's investigation into workplace conditions on either their personal or professional social media channels. "Please do not share the article," managers told their direct reports. "Please do not fave/like/comment or interact with any commentary (negative or positive) through either your personal or professional accounts." Employees were also alerted to the fact that The Verge will be speaking about the story live on CNBC this afternoon. "The reporter from the article is apparently slated to appear on CNBC," a manager said. "The direction we're getting is to continue with the protocol of not responding to inbounds relating to the article." ... |
Magic Leap’s next-generation headset is reportedly ‘years away from launch’ Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:44 AM PST Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Magic Leap's sales numbers reportedly haven't matched CEO Rony Abovitz's high expectations — and a second-generation headset could be years away from release. The Information has published a sobering update on the much-hyped augmented reality company, which released its first product last year. According to former employees and people close to the company, Magic Leap had sold around 6,000 Magic Leap One headsets six months after release, compared to a goal of 100,000. The company is apparently prototyping a Magic Leap Two headset with 5G connectivity, a wider field of view, and smaller and lighter hardware with multiple color options. But the project is reportedly hampered by "fundamental technology constraints," and Magic Leap is more... |
All I want for Christmas is this string light phone charger Posted: 06 Dec 2019 10:37 AM PST This genius combination of Christmas string lights and phone charger borders the line between kitschy and adorable, but I first saw it on Apartment Therapy, and I trust their judgment when it comes to cute items. It's a 50-inch USB cable that comes in a Lightning charger cable version for iPhones, Micro USB for Android phones, and USB-C. And it is freakin' delightful. Is it worth buying a $12 charger from a random Amazon store that describes itself as, "Our brand name is: Cewuidy. Our seller's name is YAGE TALE ."? That's for you to decide, but for me, it is absolutely worth it. Reviewers say the lights won't get hot even after being plugged in for 12 hours, and that it's not absolute garbage because it still works after a year! The... |
