You can see where and how many cases have been reported in this map created by US researchers. So far, there have been over 9,700 confirmed cases and 213 deaths. The majority of the illnesses are in China, but cases have been reported in nearly two dozen other countries, including the US. No deaths related to the illness have been reported outside of China. ‘Do not travel to China’ because of coronavirus risk, US tells citizens Posted: 30 Jan 2020 07:28 PM PST Photo by CHARLY TRIBALLEAU/AFP via Getty Images Americans shouldn't travel to China because of the risks from the new coronavirus, the US State Department said. US citizens currently in China should "consider departing using commercial means," the alert said. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo echoed the warning on Twitter. A Level 4 travel advisory is the most severe warning issued by the State Department, and it applies only to areas with a "greater likelihood of life-threatening risks."

Nintendo says it has no plans for a new Switch this year Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:51 PM PST Photo by James Bareham / The Verge Nintendo CEO and president Shuntaro Furukawa told investors today that the company has "no plans" to launch a new model of the Switch in 2020. Speaking as part of a corporate management policy briefing following yesterday's release of financial results, Furukawa instead pointed to today's announcement of the new Animal Crossing-branded model. "According to the conventional wisdom for dedicated video game platforms, Nintendo Switch should be entering the midway phase of the hardware lifecycle," Furukawa said. "But we believe we have built a foundation on which we can pursue further growth opportunities for Nintendo Switch." It wouldn't really be surprising if there were no new Switch hardware this year. The original system came out in... |
Here’s what you need to watch the Super Bowl in 4K HDR Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:35 PM PST Photo by Rich Graessle/PPI/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images Updated 9:35PM ET, January 30th: Just a few hours after we published this guide, Roku notified its users that it is pulling all seven of its Fox apps from its platform, and this includes Fox Sports. This means that your Roku device will be in the dark on gameday, unless you subscribe to fuboTV, Hulu with Live TV, or Sling TV to tune in (all of which offer a free trial). Roku told The Verge that the reason for the channel removal is due to a carriage dispute between it and Fox. An agreement could be reached in time for the Super Bowl on Sunday, which would reinstate the channels. But if not, at least Fox Sports won't have to update its Super Bowl LIV page again — Roku's name has been wiped clean from it already. The original post follows... |
Roku is losing Fox apps just in time for you to miss the Super Bowl, maybe Posted: 30 Jan 2020 06:14 PM PST If you were hoping to watch the Super Bowl on your Roku TV or set-top box, I hope you don't mind paying for streaming services like FuboTV, Sling or Hulu, because your existing cable subscription is no good as of today — Roku is pulling all of its Fox apps off of the platform, effective tomorrow, two days before the Big Game. That might strike you as sudden, considering we reported this very morning that Fox Sports was working hard to bring a 4K HDR stream of the Super Bowl to Roku's streaming sticks, pucks, and TVs. But minutes ago, Fox Sports removed references to Roku from multiple spots on its Super Bowl website, and we confirmed with Roku that seven channels in total are leaving... unless Fox and Roku strike a deal. |
Nintendo’s new Animal Crossing-themed Switch looks amazing Posted: 30 Jan 2020 05:02 PM PST Nintendo is releasing an Animal Crossing-themed Switch on March 13th, just one week before the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and it's one of the best-looking Switch models yet. Nintendo says you'll be able to pre-order the themed console at select retailers soon. This is the full-size Switch, which means it can be played in handheld mode or on a TV by dropping the Switch into the (Nook family-adorned) dock. It also comes with detachable Joy-Con controllers, and the colors on them look amazing. This model of the Switch also has an embossed design on the back that's just awesome. If you do pick this up, though, you should be aware that Animal Crossing: New... |
Google searches for coronavirus will now show you safety tips Posted: 30 Jan 2020 04:18 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Searching Google for "coronavirus" will now send users to a curated search results page with resources from the World Health Organization, safety tips, and news updates, Google and the WHO announced today. This effort, which is just one of Google's SOS Alerts, is now live. Google also announced a $250,000 direct grant from Google.org, the company's philanthropic arm, that will go to the Chinese Red Cross to help support coronavirus relief efforts.

You can now report voter suppression on Twitter ahead of the 2020 election Posted: 30 Jan 2020 02:48 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Twitter's tool for reporting instances of voter suppression is now available for US users, just days ahead of the 2020 Iowa caucuses (via Politico). In its "report this tweet" drop-down menu, US Twitter users now will be able to choose "it's misleading about a political election" or "it intends to suppress or intimidate someone from voting" as options. If Twitter finds the tweet violates its election integrity policy, the user could be asked to remove the tweet, and repeated abusers could be banned from the platform. To avoid getting flagged for violating Twitter's voter suppression rules, don't tweet a fake election date, for instance, and don't tweet that one group of voters can vote online or on a different day. And definitely don't... |
You can now own a life-sized, screen-accurate Baby Yoda figure... for $350 Posted: 30 Jan 2020 02:04 PM PST Photo: Sideshow Collectibles The picture at the top of this post isn't a screenshot of The Child (aka, Baby Yoda) from Disney+'s The Mandalorian; rather, it's an incredibly detailed, 1:1 life-sized replica of the iconic character from Sideshow Collectibles, and it could be yours... for the low, low price of $350. Preorders for the figure open today, but it's not expected to arrive until August to October later this year. If that massive price tag didn't give it away: this isn't a stuffed toy or action figure, like the official plushies that Disney is selling later this year (or the far cuter but unofficial Etsy iterations that Disney is fighting against). It's a collectible figurine that mostly just stands around on your desk or counter, with what looks like few... |
Amazon now has more than 150 million Prime members after huge holiday season Posted: 30 Jan 2020 01:51 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Amazon released its fourth quarter earnings for 2019 today, and the company is touting big Prime subscriber numbers as one of the main contributors to a very successful holiday season. The company says it now has over 150 million Prime subscribers, and that more people joined Prime during the fourth quarter of last year than any other quarter in the company's history. Since its last milestone of 100 million subscribers in 2018, more than 50 million people have joined. It's no secret that people subscribe to Prime, at least its monthly version instead of its annual one, more during the holiday season than at other times in the year, to ensure that gifts arrive for the holidays. But Amazon also attributes its particularly big swell of new... |
