WeWork’s fall is so wild that it’s getting a second TV series, this one for Apple Posted: 27 Feb 2020 05:33 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge WeWork was 2019's soap opera of a company, and its story was so wild that it will be the focus of a second TV series, Variety reports. The second series will be developed by Apple and the showrunner of Apple TV Plus series Little America, according to Variety. (Disclosure: Little America is adapted from a series by Epic Magazine, which is owned by Vox Media, The Verge's parent company.) The series will be based on David Brown's WeCrashed podcast from the podcast network Wondery. Variety's report doesn't indicate when the series might be released. But if or when it does, WeWork's story should make for good TV. Last summer, WeWork was gearing up for massive initial public offering. Shortly after its... |
Horror story subreddit goes dark to protest Youtubers ripping off writers Posted: 27 Feb 2020 04:27 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge The popular horror story subreddit r/nosleep has set itself to private until Monday to protest YouTube creators stealing stories and turning them into videos without permission from their original creators (via Tubefilter). R/nosleep, which hosts an array of short stories and other horror-related writing, is in the top 50 most popular subreddits, with nearly 14 million subscribers, according to the website Reddit Metrics. So it draws a lot of readers for the scary stories users submit. (The term "nosleep" comes from the idea that if you read the stories, they're scary enough that they'll keep you from going to sleep.) Some YouTube creators will take those stories and make dramatic readings of them on their YouTube channels, like this... |
Unions are pushing the FTC to investigate Amazon for anti-competitive practices Posted: 27 Feb 2020 03:46 PM PST Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge A coalition of some of the largest labor unions in the US have formally petitioned the Federal Trade Commission to investigate Amazon for anticompetitive practices. The petition, filed Thursday, is a 28-page document with nearly 150 footnotes, and it asks the FTC to conduct a study exploring Amazon's effects on the economy and whether the structure of its sprawling empire gives it unfair advantages in the marketplace. The collective union members total more than 5.3 million. The groups participating include the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which includes 1.4 million truck drivers and other transportation-related workers; the Communications Workers of America, a media labor union including millions of telecommunications and... |
Clearview AI’s client list includes 2,200 organizations spanning law enforcement to universities Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:52 PM PST Illustration by James Bareham / The Verge US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Department of Justice, the FBI, Macy's, and Best Buy are among the thousands of government agencies and private companies using the software of facial recognition company Clearview AI, according to a leaked client list obtained exclusively by BuzzFeed News. The controversial company's database, which includes more than 3 billion images scraped from social media and other sites, is aimed at helping law enforcement catch persons of interest, as first reported by The New York Times last month. According to the Times investigation, Clearview AI's tools could identify people from the scraped images, revealing their names, where they lived, and other personal information. But numerous companies have... |
Apple Arcade’s latest exclusive is a new Crossy Road spinoff Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:35 PM PST Image: Hipster Whale The latest entry in Apple's mobile game subscription service, Apple Arcade, is Crossy Road Castle, a brand-new endless runner-style game from developer Hipster Whale. The studio made its name creating the Frogger-inspired endless runner Crossy Road back in 2014, which has enjoyed a fair amount of success as both a mobile game and a smart TV one available on Apple's tvOS platform. Now, Hipster Whale is back with not quite a sequel, but more a spinoff using the same art style and cast of characters. Crossy Road Castle is still an endless runner, but instead of crossing a busy street full of cars, you're traversing an endlessly high castle tower full of obstacles and enemies. The levels are procedurally generated, Hipster Whale says, and... |
OnlyFans says it wasn’t hacked after hundreds of performers’ videos leak online Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:30 PM PST Image: Alex Castro / The Verge More than 1.6TB worth of videos and images from OnlyFans has been leaked online. The data dump appears to be primarily comprised of women's accounts, specifically those who use the site to share pornographic images. OnlyFans claims it's not due to a hack, though. Steve Pym, OnlyFans' marketing chief, said on Twitter that the company has "found no evidence of any breach of our systems" and that the leaked files appear to "be curated from multiple sources, including other social media applications." The statement was first reported by Motherboard. OnlyFans did not respond to The Verge's request for comment. OnlyFans allows influencers, models, public figures, and... |
Google’s new search tools help you find the perfect pop culture GIF Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:28 PM PST Google has launched a few tools to make it a lot easier to find the right GIF for your conversation. The tools work like this: search for a celebrity or fictional character in the drop-down box, and it displays the type of emotions or reactions that are most associated with them, or vice versa. So if you are searching for a GIF of Michael Scott, you will most likely find GIFs associated with happiness. Another tool lets you search through various emotions to find the most popular celebrity or fictional character. If you are searching for a GIF associated with the word "shrug," for example, you will most likely find GIFs of Kanye West, Elmo, and Oprah Winfrey to convey that feeling of confusion or indifference. These new interactive... |
Pete Buttigieg is canvassing his Twitter followers ahead of Super Tuesday Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:12 PM PST Photo by LOGAN CYRUS/AFP via Getty Images The Pete Buttigieg campaign is deploying any army of Twitter volunteers to "digitally door-knock" likely supporters ahead of the important Super Tuesday primaries next week, two members of the Buttigieg campaign told The Verge. It's just one way that 2020 presidential campaigns are leveraging social media in new and aggressive ways ahead of the primary contest. As part of its efforts to get out the vote, the Buttigieg campaign has amassed roughly 200 total volunteers, spread across every Super Tuesday state and territory, to contact likely Pete supporters over Twitter. Those volunteers will reach out to a set of the @PeteforAmerica Twitter account's over 66,000 followers, organized by the state listed in their Twitter profile. |
Apple reportedly releasing an iPad keyboard with a trackpad later this year Posted: 27 Feb 2020 01:59 PM PST Apple is planning to release a new iPad keyboard with a built-in trackpad later this year, according to The Information. The new accessory is likely going to release alongside the next version of the iPad Pro, said The Information's source. Adding a trackpad to an iPad keyboard would be yet another move from Apple to bring functionality typically associated with a laptop to the company's popular tablet line. iPadOS already has mouse support, but it's an extension of the iPad's AssistiveTouch technology and you have to dig into the accessibility menu to turn it on. And the on-screen mouse pointer isn't the usual little black arrow you might be used to on your computer — it's a big, semi-opaque circle that has a dot in the middle. |
