Square’s Cash App details how to use its direct deposit feature to access stimulus funds Posted: 10 Apr 2020 05:39 PM PDT Payments platform Square is now suggesting users deposit their COVID-19 stimulus payments through its Cash App for faster and easier access to the funds, in the event someone doesn't have access to a traditional bank account. The app has started showing users a pop-up explaining how to go about getting the payment deposited without having to wait for a paper check in the mail, and a Square spokesperson told The Verge that the company is attempting to make its deposits feature "more accessible" by highlighting it. Much like a bank account, you can get a routing and account number directly through Cash App to receive deposits. Square released this feature back in early 2018, allowing you to set up direct deposit to receive paychecks.
Leica and Olympus are offering free virtual courses and talks for photographers Posted: 10 Apr 2020 04:42 PM PDT Camera makers Leica and Olympus have announced initiatives to offer free courses and talks for photographers amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Many companies that cater to creative fields have opened up resources for those currently stuck at home, and last week Nikon made its entire curriculum of online photography classes free until the end of April. For its part, Olympus has launched "Home With Olympus Sessions" to connect people with Olympus technical experts. Photographers can sign up for group or one-on-one sessions to ask specific questions, get feedback, and learn more about their Olympus cameras from home. The group sessions are capped at six people and are themed around particular camera models and types of photography, like...
How you’ll use Apple and Google’s coronavirus tracking tool Posted: 10 Apr 2020 03:48 PM PDT Earlier today, Apple and Google announced a Bluetooth-based COVID-19 contact tracing platform that could alert people if they've been exposed to the novel coronavirus. Contact tracing is a huge component in ending mass pandemic "stay-at-home" orders, and while phone tracking can't replace traditional methods like interviews, it can supplement them. Google and Apple are using Bluetooth LE signals for contact tracing. When two people are near each other, their phones can exchange an anonymous identification key, recording that they've had close contact. If one person is later diagnosed with COVID-19, they can share that information through an app. The system will notify other users they've been close to, so those people can self-quarantine...
Verizon’s new tracking tool tells advertisers when you’re looking at your email inbox Posted: 10 Apr 2020 02:20 PM PDT Verizon quietly introduced a new email marketing feature yesterday that it ominously calls "View Time Optimization," which is a fancy euphemism for a tracking tool that alerts advertisers to the moment you're looking at your email inbox. Why? So they can send you an ad, of course. The service is part of Verizon's suite of email and web advertising properties, which includes AOL and Yahoo, and well-known programmer David Heinemeier Hansson (the inventor of the Ruby on Rails web application framework) called out Verizon on Twitter today for what Hansson calls an "Orwellian" ad placement tool. (It should be noted Hansson is helping develop a privacy-focused email client called Hey through his company Basecamp, of which he is the...
Disney is remaking its classic 1973 Robin Hood film as a CGI Disney Plus exclusive Posted: 10 Apr 2020 01:15 PM PDT Following The Lion King, Mulan, and Aladdin, to name a few, Disney's 1973 classic animated film Robin Hood is the latest movie to get a live-action remake. This one, however, is going straight to Disney Plus. Much like The Lion King, the new version of Robin Hood will "feature the characters as anthropomorphic, this time in a live-action/CG hybrid format," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie will also be a musical. The original version famously portrayed the noble thief of Sherwood Forest as a fox, while his gang of merry men were illustrated as other animals. Little John was a black bear, the Sheriff of Nottingham was a wolf, Friar Tuck was a badger, and perhaps most memorably, Prince John was a thumb-sucking,...
You can watch Quibi’s reboot of Punk’d in Fortnite Posted: 10 Apr 2020 01:00 PM PDT The newly launched Quibi is a streaming service with shows meant to be watched in short bursts wherever you are — and, today at least, that includes inside of Fortnite. Today sees a limited time promotion where the Quibi reboot of the prank show Punk'd, hosted by Chance the Rapper, will be airing hourly at Risky Reels, the drive-in theater on Fortnite's island. (Though it doesn't appear that you can rotate the screen, a core feature of Quibi.) It's a strange bit of cross-promotion, but it's also something that's becoming common in Fortnite. Back in December, J.J. Abrams stopped by in-game to show off a clip of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and there have been other promotions for everything from Birds of Prey to Borderlands....
Xbox Live experienced issues for the third time in a month Posted: 10 Apr 2020 12:40 PM PDT Microsoft's Xbox Live service experienced issues affecting online multiplayer earlier today. "We're aware that some users may have trouble joining parties or playing online multiplayer & our teams are investigating," Microsoft said in a 2:38PM ET tweet about the issues. Down Detector indicated a spike in user-reported problems shortly before 2PM ET. Microsoft said the issues should be resolved in a 4:53PM ET tweet. It was the third time in less than a month that Xbox Live experienced notable problems. Xbox Live went down for more than two hours on March 15th and had a multihour outage on March 20th. More people than ever are relying on services like Xbox Live for entertainment and to stay in contact with friends and family while stuck...
| Call of Duty: Warzone now has more than 50 million players one month after launch Posted: 10 Apr 2020 12:31 PM PDT Call of Duty: Warzone, the new battle royale (BR) mode from developer Infinity Ward, now has more than 50 million players, publisher Activision announced on Friday. The milestone, which Warzone reached just one month after its release, makes the game one of the fastest-growing free-to-play titles in the game industry. Warzone previously hit 30 million players just under two weeks after launch. Unlike Activision's previous lackluster attempt at a battle royale title, Blackout, which was made available only within 2018's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Warzone was released as a standalone download on consoles and PC. It does not require players own any other software or pay any money to play it, which has greatly helped its popularity.

Taika Waititi gives updates on next Thor movie during Thor: Ragnarok watch party live stream Posted: 10 Apr 2020 12:12 PM PDT Celebrities, they're just like us: stuck at home and watching old movies to help pass the time while social distancing. Although, if you're Taika Waititi and you're choosing to rewatch Thor: Ragnarok with pals Mark Ruffalo and Tessa Thompson, it's a bit more elaborate. Waititi hosted an Instagram Live watch party of Ragnarok on Thursday night, intent on providing commentary about the 2017 Marvel film he directed. Instead, Waititi's stream turned into an impromptu Q&A session with tens of thousands of fans who tuned in, back-and-forth bantering with Ruffalo (Bruce Banner) and Thompson (Valkyrie), and a few updates on his upcoming Thor movie, Thor: Love and Thunder. The live stream was a typical Waititi affair, with less overall...
