Apple Maps now shows COVID-19 testing sites Posted: 28 Apr 2020 05:12 PM PDT Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Apple Maps will now show COVID-19 testing sites in all 50 states and Puerto Rico (via TechCrunch). When you search using terms like "COVID-19 test" or "coronavirus test," places that offer COVID-19 tests will be marked on your map. If you start typing COVID-19 into the search bar, you'll also see the "COVID-19 Testing" search term appear at the top of your search bar, like what you'd see if you started typing something like "groceries" or "coffee shops." Apple's information cards for the testing sites include the site's hours, address, and phone number, as well as a warning that "COVID-19 testing may require a doctor's referral and an appointment at the testing center" and a link to the website of the healthcare provider offering the... |
AMC Theaters will no longer play Universal movies after Trolls World Tour’s on-demand success Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:44 PM PDT AMC Theatres will no longer play Universal films effective immediately after "unacceptable" comments were made from NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell on its decision to bypass a traditional theatrical release for Trolls World Tour and make it a digital exclusive, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In a new interview with the Wall Street Journal, Jeff Shell noted that Trolls World Tour succeeded their expectations, pulling in nearly $100 million in revenue through digital sales alone and more than five million copies sold. As a result, Shell noted that as "soon as theaters reopen, we expect to release movies on both formats," meaning some movies would continue with theatrical releases while others would go directly to digital retailers or... |
Overwatch’s biggest star is moving to Valorant Posted: 28 Apr 2020 04:36 PM PDT Photo by Robert Paul / Blizzard Entertainment Overwatch's top professional player is moving on to a new game. Today, Jay "Sinatraa" Won left the Overwatch League's San Francisco Shock, and ESPN reported that it's so he can switch to a different title: Riot's new team shooter Valorant, which is currently in closed beta. Won will compete for esports organization Sentinels, the team announced today. Sentinels is also home to Fortnite World Cup champion Kyle "Bugha" Giersdorf. Earlier, Won confirmed his departure from the Shock and that he's moving to Valorant. In a post on Twitlonger, Won said he retired from Overwatch because he "straight up just lost passion" for the game. Won made headlines last year with a dominating season. His team won... |
Jay Z is using copyright strikes to remove deepfaked audio of himself from YouTube Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:38 PM PDT Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images for The Recording Academy Hip-hop mogul Jay-Z has become an unlikely source of inspiration within the budding community of artificial intelligence-powered impersonation, known colloquially as deepfakes, and the rap icon's record label has taken notice and issued copyright strikes to shut some of it down. It's not that Jay-Z is being maligned without his consent, as a majority of deepfakes tend to do by pasting the head of female celebrities and other women onto the bodies of adult film actresses. Rather, this is the world of safe-for-work, audio-only deepfakes that dabble mostly in parody, as well as putting on display the awe-inspiring technical sophistication the field has produced in just a few short years time. |
Google’s Meet teleconferencing service now adding about 3 million users per day Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:08 PM PDT Illustration: Alex Castro / The Verge Google's Meet teleconferencing service is now adding about 3 million users per day, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced on the company's first quarter earnings call. That's up quite a bit from earlier this month — Google had said that more than 2 million new users were were connecting on the service every day as of April 9th. Meet's significant growth is likely driven by increased usage of the service as schools and workplaces have had to host classes and meetings online while at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Last week, we surpassed a significant milestone," said Pichai on today's earnings call. "We are now adding roughly 3 million new users each day and have seen a thirty-fold increase in usage since January. There are now over... |
Uber’s CTO steps down as company reportedly mulls 20 percent layoffs Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:47 PM PDT Photo By Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile via Getty Images Thuan Pham, Uber's chief technology officer, is stepping down, the ride-hailing company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission Tuesday. Pham was the longest serving top executive at the company, having joined Uber in 2013. The news of his departure was first reported by The Information, which also is reporting that executives at Uber are actively discussing a cost-cutting plan that could involve layoffs of up to 20 percent of the company's employees. The layoffs haven't been finalized, but could be announced in stages over several weeks, The Information added. If the company goes through with the plan, an estimated 5,400 employees could lose their jobs. An Uber spokesperson declined to comment on the prospect of... |
Next year’s Oscars will allow streaming-only movies to qualify, but with heavy restrictions Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:34 PM PDT Matt Petit - Handout/A.M.P.A.S. via Getty Images The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science will allow some movies released on streaming platforms and via digital release to qualify for the 2021 Oscars because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This doesn't mean that every movie on every streaming service is suddenly going to be eligible to be nominated for Best Picture, though. The board of governors have decided that a movie which winds up on a streaming service must have a previously planned theatrical release. This is closer to the usual qualifications movies must meet to be eligible, a list of requirements that typically include running for seven days theatrically in a commercial theater in Los Angeles County. But the change does mean that a movie like Trolls World Tour — which was... |
AMD’s quarterly profits sink, and it expects weakened demand throughout 2020 Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:17 PM PDT AMD posted its Q1 2020 financial results, and quarter-to-quarter revenue is down by 16 percent. Its quarterly operating income also took a dive, as revenue slowed and R&D costs went up. On the bright side, it shared that its $1.79 billion year-to-year revenue is up 40 percent compared to this time in 2020. It attributes this big jump to its computing and graphics segments, including its Ryzen processors and Radeon graphics cards — both of which have gotten major updates recently. The company didn't initially come right out and say that the COVID-19 pandemic was the culprit to its less-than-favorable financial results, but it did during the investor call. AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su cited that reduced supply chains and a downturn of retail in... |
Epic Games is requiring customers to enable two-factor authentication to redeem free games Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:50 PM PDT Image: Epic Games Epic Games will occasionally require users to enable two-factor authentication before redeeming free games on its digital storefront between now and May 21st. The goal is to encourage "players to take steps to strengthen their Epic account security," the company wrote in a blog post. To enable two-factor authentication, users have to log into the Epic Games Store and head into their account settings. Two-factor authentication typically requires users to confirm their identities while logging into an account using a PIN sent to their email address or phone number. Having two-factor authentication activated provides an extra security measure to prevent your account from being compromised if your password is stolen. In January 2019, a... |
Alphabet weathers first quarter after the novel coronavirus, but the worst is yet to come Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:38 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Google parent company Alphabet managed to weather the storm caused by COVID-19 in its first quarterly earnings that take into account the society-altering shifts of the global pandemic. But this past quarter included barely two months of time since many countries instituted shelter-in-place orders that have all but eliminated global travel and other industries that spend big on web advertising. That means the worst is yet to come for Alphabet's business, and CEO Sundar Pichai and finance chief Ruth Porat appear to be trying to prepare the company accordingly. "Performance was strong during the first two months of the quarter, but then in March we experienced a... |
