Apple is designing and shipping face shields for medical workers Posted: 05 Apr 2020 08:42 PM PDT Apple CEO Tim Cook has provided an update on the company's response to the COVID-19 crisis. In a video posted to Twitter, Cook says Apple has sourced more than 20 million masks through its global supply chain and is working with governments to donate them where they're needed. Apple has also launched "a company-wide effort bringing together product designers, engineering, operations, packaging teams, and our suppliers to design, produce and ship face shields for health workers," according to Cook, who showed off one of these shields in the video.

YouTube says it will suppress content promoting false 5G coronavirus conspiracy Posted: 05 Apr 2020 02:11 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge YouTube said it would reduce the number of videos it recommends to users on its platform which spread false claims that 5G technology is linked to the coronavirus, The Guardian reported. The company said it will remove videos that violate its policies. It may allow other conspiracy-themed content about 5G which doesn't mention the coronavirus to remain on the site as "borderline content." Those videos could be suppressed and removed from search results. At least seven cell towers have been set on fire in the past week in the UK — four in the past 24 hours— after online conspiracy theories have inaccurately claimed a link between the cell towers and the coronavirus pandemic. One of the towers set on fire wasn't even a 5G mast. A YouTube... |
Zoom CEO responds to security and privacy concerns: “We had some missteps” Posted: 05 Apr 2020 11:27 AM PDT Photo by Kena Betancur/Getty Images Appearing before a background that said "we care" over an image of a heart-shaped planet Earth, Zoom CEO Eric S. Yuan said Sunday on CNN that despite the company's recent security problems, its "intentions are good." "We moved too fast... and we had some missteps," Yuan said in an interview with CNN's Brian Stelter. "We've learned our lessons and we've taken a step back to focus on privacy and security."
Yuan earlier told the Wall Street Journal that he "really messed up as CEO" and that he felt "an obligation to win the users' trust back." Yuan's mea culpae follow a tumultuous... |
Quibi is coming, with the worst — or maybe best — timing Posted: 05 Apr 2020 07:00 AM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Quibi was never supposed to compete with Netflix or Disney Plus. The novelty was shortform video for people as they waited for coffee or the bus. The space Quibi intended to seize was the lost minutes in the day — the ones big streamers aren't competing for. But the COVID-19 pandemic has changed Quibi's plans as it launches on Monday, April 6th. The question was whether Hollywood icon Jeffrey Katzenberg and Silicon Valley giant Meg Whitman could make a streaming service designed to be enjoyed on the go. Now Quibi has to compete on the couch. It's another obstacle in Quibi's attempt to break into an already oversaturated market. This is both the best and the worst time to be launching a streaming service. People are hungry for new... |
Etsy reminds sellers making cloth face masks: Don’t suggest they prevent COVID 19 infection Posted: 05 Apr 2020 06:45 AM PDT Etsy sellers have sold hundreds of thousands of cloth face masks in the past few days, the company says, and demand is likely to outstrip supply soon now that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has shifted its guidance on wearing such masks in public. "We hope that increasing the availability of fabric, non-medical grade face masks from Etsy sellers will allow more medical and surgical masks to reach the people who need them most: front-line health care workers," Etsy CEO Josh Silverman said in a statement Friday. But while Silverman encouraged sellers to consider making the masks, a set of guidelines for sellers stresses that making medical claims about the masks is against its rules, and, advises sellers not to use... |
From The Strategist: The 10 Best Planners for 2020 Posted: 05 Apr 2020 06:00 AM PDT Instead of an app or gadget that claims to jump-start your productivity, this year, you should invest in a good paper planner. After all, there's plenty of research showing that actually writing down your to-do list and schedule for the day — rather than typing it out on a laptop or your iPhone — makes you feel more engaged in the task at hand. And though we've written about some of our favorite planners in the past, like this Japanese option, we wanted to find the best planners available. So we reached out to productivity experts, life coaches, and people who just love stationery and know how to get things done and asked them about their favorites. Below, the best life planners, day planners, and planners that will keep you on track in... |
“Reimagined” E3 2021 scheduled for next June Posted: 05 Apr 2020 05:53 AM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro The Entertainment Software Association has notified partners that E3 2021 will be held June 15th to 17th, 2021, according to GamesIndustry.biz. The ESA canceled E3 2020 last month due to concerns about the COVID-19 outbreak but is reportedly working on a "reimagined" event for 2021. There's still no word on whether North America's biggest annual gaming conference, held annually since 1995, will return in some other form in 2020. When it announced the cancellation of this year's E3, the ESA said "We are also exploring options with our members to coordinate an online experience to showcase industry announcements and news in June 2020." E3 has traditionally been one of the biggest weeks for new video game announcements, but several big... |
