Wyze will try pay-what-you-want model for its AI-powered person detection Posted: 20 Jul 2020 04:34 PM PDT Image: Wyze Smart home company Wyze is experimenting with a rather unconventional method for providing customers with artificial intelligence-powered person detection for its smart security cameras: a pay-what-you-want business model. On Monday, the company said it would provide the feature for free as initially promised, after it had to disable it due to an abrupt end to its licensing deal with fellow Seattle-based company Xnor.ai, which was acquired by Apple in November of last year. But Wyze, taking a page out of the old Radiohead playbook, is hoping some customers might be willing to chip in to help it cover the costs. AI-powered person detection uses machine learning models to train an algorithm to differentiate between the movement of an... |
Facebook suspends anti-mask group for spreading COVID-19 misinformation Posted: 20 Jul 2020 04:16 PM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Facebook has removed one of the largest anti-mask groups on its platform for violating its policies against spreading misinformation about COVID-19. The About section of the public group Unmasking America! — which had more than 9,600 members — described it as "here to spread the TRUTH about masks!" It made several claims which have been widely debunked about masks obstructing oxygen flow and having a negative psychological impact. "It is a psychological anchor for suppression, enslavement and cognitive obedience. When you wear a mask you are complicit in declaring all humans as dangerous, infectious and threats," the post stated. It is one of dozens of such groups easily found in a search for "unmasking" on Facebook. Some of the groups... |
Whistleblower Reality Winner has tested positive for COVID-19 in prison Posted: 20 Jul 2020 02:56 PM PDT Photo by Sean Rayford / Getty Images Former intelligence contractor and whistleblower Reality Winner has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. Winner's sister, Brittany Winner, tweeted her diagnosis earlier today. Winner is currently incarcerated in a federal medical prison in Fort Worth, Texas, where an outbreak has sickened hundreds of inmates and killed at least two. Winner is seeking compassionate release during the coronavirus pandemic, citing underlying medical conditions. An early petition for release from her imprisonment at FMC Carswell was denied in April. Shortly afterward, Carswell reported its first coronavirus death: Andrea Circle Bear, who died after giving birth on a ventilator. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported last week that 130 people had... |
Wemo’s new WiFi Smart Plug is smaller, cheaper, and available now Posted: 20 Jul 2020 01:53 PM PDT Wemo's new miniaturized WiFi Smart Plug — which the company announced at CES earlier this year — is now available to actually buy. The new Wemo WiFi Smart Plug is functionally the same as the previous model, but it's 45 percent smaller than the old (and now somewhat inaccurately named) Wemo Mini model that preceded it. Like the last version, it supports Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and the Wemo app for your various smart home integrations. The new plug is actually a fraction of a inch taller than the Wemo Mini, but it makes up for that by being far less wide than the old model. The WiFi Smart Plug now takes up just slightly more space than a three-prong plug, which should make it easier to discreetly... |
HBO Max and Peacock are losing some of their biggest titles just after launching Posted: 20 Jul 2020 01:46 PM PDT When HBO Max launched, one of WarnerMedia's big selling points was having the entire Harry Potter collection available to stream. Three months later, that's no longer the case. An email detailing what's coming to and leaving HBO Max in August points out that all eight movies, from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, will leave the service on August 25th. It's unclear where the films will wind up, but speculation is already circulating over whether the films will move to NBCUniversal's new streaming service, Peacock. That's because years prior to HBO Max's launch, WarnerMedia signed a deal with NBCUniversal that gave the latter company exclusive rights to the Harry Potter series through... |

The brain behind the Google Pixel camera is building a universal camera app for Adobe Posted: 20 Jul 2020 11:42 AM PDT Image: Google Marc Levoy, the researcher who used software to turn Google's Pixel camera into a powerhouse, has joined Adobe to build a universal camera app, Adobe announced today. Levoy headed up the team that developed the impressive computational photography technology used in Google's Pixel smartphones, including features like Night Sight, Portrait Mode, and HDR+. His work also helped Pixels take great photos without requiring as much hardware as competing phones — the Pixel line famously only needed a single camera to stay competitive with Apple's iPhones, until a desire for sharper zoom images pushed Google to add a second, telephoto lens with last year's Pixel 4. (The first iPhone with a second lens, the iPhone 7 Plus, came out in 2016.) |
Mark Zuckerberg says there’s ‘no deal of any kind’ with Donald Trump Posted: 20 Jul 2020 11:14 AM PDT Photo by Tobias Hase / Picture Alliance via Getty Images Has Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg cut a secret deal with President Donald Trump, turning a blind eye to his lies and incendiary posts in the hope that the social media giant won't become the president's next target? Rumors of this sort have been swirling for months, but Zuckerberg himself has now denied it, telling Axios that no such deal exists. "I've heard this speculation, too, so let me be clear: There's no deal of any kind," said Zuckerberg. "Actually, the whole idea of a deal is pretty ridiculous." The comments come in response to mounting concern over Zuckerberg's relationship with the president, which has remained cordial despite worries about the... |
Coinbase says it halted more than $280,000 in bitcoin transactions during Twitter hack Posted: 20 Jul 2020 11:08 AM PDT Illustration by Alex Castro The cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase said that it stopped around 1,100 customers from sending bitcoin to hackers who gained access to high-profile Twitter accounts last week. Last Wednesday, over 100 Twitter accounts, some belonging to major companies like Apple and high-profile people like Vice President Joe Biden and Bill Gates, were hacked as part of a massive coordinated bitcoin scam. According to Twitter, the hackers were able to convince some of the company's employees to use internal systems and tools to access the accounts and help the hackers defraud users into sending them bitcoin. According to Forbes, Coinbase and other cryptocurrency exchanges were able to stop some customers from sending bitcoin to the hackers by... |
Aurora will test its fleet of self-driving cars and semi trucks in Texas Posted: 20 Jul 2020 11:06 AM PDT Aurora, the startup founded by former lead engineer for Google's self-driving project Chris Urmson, is bringing its fleet of test vehicles to Texas. It's the latest company to shift resources to the Lone Star State, which has quickly become a hotbed of autonomous vehicle testing. Aurora says it is bringing a "small" fleet of vehicles to the Dallas-Fort Worth area within the next few weeks. The company tests out its autonomous vehicle hardware and software in both Chrysler Pacifica minivans — also popular with Urmson's former employers at Waymo (née Google) — and Class 8 tractor trailers. Aurora says its first commercial service will be in trucking "where the market is largest today, the unit economics are best, and the level of service... |
