‘Misogynistic’ Apple hire is out hours after employees call for investigation Posted: 12 May 2021 06:33 PM PDT Antonio García Martínez is no longer working at Apple hours after employees circulated a petition calling for an investigation into his hiring. Martínez, a former Facebook product manager on the ad targeting team, authored a controversial book about Silicon Valley where he expressed misogynistic views on women. "We are deeply concerned about the recent hiring of Antonio García Martínez," employees wrote in the petition. "His misogynistic statements in his autobiography — such as 'Most women in the Bay Area are soft and weak, cosseted and naive despite their claims of worldliness, and generally full of shit' (further quoted below this letter) — directly oppose Apple's commitment to Inclusion & Diversity." More than 2,000 employees signed... |
A security researcher found Wi-Fi vulnerabilities that have existed since the beginning Posted: 12 May 2021 05:59 PM PDT The security researcher who discovered the Krack Wi-Fi vulnerability has discovered a slew of other flaws with the wireless protocol most of us use to power our online lives (via Gizmodo). The vulnerabilities relate to how Wi-Fi handles large chunks of data, with some being related to the Wi-Fi standard itself, and some being related to how it's implemented by device manufacturers. The researcher, Mathy Vanhoef, calls the collection of vulnerabilities "FragAttacks," with the name being a mashup of "fragmentation" and "aggregation." He also says the vulnerabilities could be exploited by hackers, allowing them to intercept sensitive data, or show users fake websites, even if they're using Wi-Fi networks secured with WPA2 or even WPA3. They... |
Intel is using machine learning to make GTA V look incredibly, unsettlingly realistic Posted: 12 May 2021 05:04 PM PDT One of the more impressive aspects of Grand Theft Auto V is how closely the game's San Andreas approximates real-life Los Angeles and Southern California, but a new machine learning project from Intel Labs called "Enhancing Photorealism Enhancement" might take that realism in a unsettlingly photorealistic direction (via Gizmodo). Putting the game through the processes researchers Stephan R. Richter, Hassan Abu Alhaija, and Vladlen Kolten created produces a surprising result: a visual look that has unmistakable similarities to the kinds of photos you might casually take through the smudged front window of your car. You have to see it in motion to really appreciate it, but the combination of slightly washed-out lighting, smoother pavement,... |
The child safety problem on platforms is worse than we knew Posted: 12 May 2021 05:00 PM PDT Millions of young children are using platforms years before they turn 13 — and their presence could put many of them in danger. An alarming new study has found that minors in the US often receive abuse, harassment, or sexual solicitation from adults on tech platforms. For the most part, though, children say they are not informing parents or other trusted adults about these interactions — and are instead turning for support for tech platforms, whose limited blocking and reporting tools have failed to address the threats they face. The report from Thorn, a nonprofit organization that builds technology to defend children from sexual abuse, identifies a disturbing gap in efforts by Snap, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and others to keep... |
Biden signs executive order aiming to prevent future cybersecurity disasters Posted: 12 May 2021 04:58 PM PDT President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Wednesday implementing new policies aimed to improve national cybersecurity. The executive order comes in the wake of a number of recent cybersecurity catastrophes, such as last week's ransomware attack that took down the Colonial Pipeline, the Microsoft Exchange server vulnerabilities that may have affected north of 60,000 organizations, and the SolarWinds hack that compromised nine federal agencies late last year — each of which were specifically namedropped by the White House in a fact sheet accompanying the order. The executive order outlines a number of initiatives, including reducing barriers to information sharing between the government and the private sector, mandating the... |
Target will stop selling Pokémon cards in stores Posted: 12 May 2021 04:54 PM PDT Target has decided that it's had enough: the company has officially confirmed to Bleeding Cool that it will halt the sales of Pokémon cards throughout the US, starting Friday, May 14th. The retailer cities "an abundance of caution" for the safety of both guests and store employees and notes that it will still be selling the cards on its site. Currently, Pokémon cards (and other trading cards) are having a moment: people have swamped card grading companies, hoping to get a rating that makes their cards more valuable, and The Pokémon Company has been rushing to print enough cards to meet the demand. It seems that all the big numbers around the truly rare original cards have caused a lot of excitement around new cards as well. But Target... |
Tesla stops taking Bitcoin for vehicle purchases, citing environmental harm Posted: 12 May 2021 03:21 PM PDT Tesla has stopped accepting bitcoin as payment for its cars out of concern that it will contribute to greater consumption of fossil fuels, according to a statement CEO Elon Musk tweeted Wednesday. Tesla had only just started accepting bitcoin in late March. Musk also said that Tesla will no longer sell any more of the $1.5 billion stash of bitcoin it purchased earlier this year. Tesla sold some of that bitcoin in the first quarter of 2021, which wound up helping pad the company's quarterly profit figures. Tesla says it would resume accepting bitcoin (and would consider selling more of it) once the process of mining bitcoin "transitions to more sustainable energy," according to the statement. The company is also "looking at other... |
Proposed bill aims to toss a new wrench in NASA’s Moon lander plan Posted: 12 May 2021 02:52 PM PDT A senior lawmaker proposed a controversial piece of legislation on Wednesday that directs NASA to pick a second company to build the agency's next Moon landers — in addition to Elon Musk's SpaceX, which was awarded a $2.9 billion NASA contract to build a lander earlier this year. The bill hasn't passed the full Senate yet, but it marks a new front in an ongoing effort to overturn or rejig NASA's decision. It also sets up the first political challenge for NASA's new administrator, former Sen. Bill Nelson. NASA's choice of SpaceX last month to build the agency's first lunar lander since 1972 spawned a wave of opposition from some lawmakers and the two losing companies in the running: Jeff Bezos' space firm Blue Origin and Dynetics. Those... |
Sony has 25 PS5 games in the works, including characters you’ve never seen Posted: 12 May 2021 01:57 PM PDT Sony is apparently looking to release more than 25 PlayStation 5 games under its PlayStation Studios brand. And "nearly half" of them will not be sequels or spinoffs, according to Wired's interview with PlayStation Studio lead (and former Guerrilla Games managing director) Hermen Hulst. That could theoretically be a lot more games than the four first-party Sony titles we already know about:
Twenty-one additional games could be a huge shot in the arm for the PS5, especially considering how slowly exclusives are trickling out; Gran Turismo has already slipped to next year. Sony also may not be completely on the... |
Apple employees circulate petition demanding investigation into ‘misogynistic’ new hire Posted: 12 May 2021 01:31 PM PDT Update May 12, 9:36pm ET: Apple has confirmed Antonio García Martínez is no longer with the company. The original story is below. A group of Apple employees has written a petition asking for an investigation into the hiring of Antonio García Martínez — a former Facebook product manager and author of the book Chaos Monkeys. In the petition, the employees expressed concern about García Martínez's views on women and people of color. His hiring "calls into question parts of our system of inclusion at Apple, including hiring panels, background checks, and our process to ensure our existing culture of inclusion is strong enough to withstand individuals who don't share our inclusive values," they write. More than 2,000 employees signed the... |
