Fortunately, going on this ultra-low-carb diet doesn't mean that you have to give up bread completely! You can make a variety of tasty loaves that are packed with keto-friendly ingredients, like nut flours and butter.[1] If you're in a big hurry, you can even whip up a 90-second single-serve keto bread in your microwave. [Edit]Ingredients [Edit]Easy Almond Flour Keto Bread - of unsalted, melted butter
- 1 3/4 cups (168 g) of blanched almond flour
- 2 teaspoons (9 g) of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon (3 g) of salt
- 6 large eggs, room temperature, separated
[Edit]Egg-Free Keto Bread - 2 cups (192 g) of almond flour
- 2 cups (192 g) of powdered whey protein isolate
- 1 tbsp (22 g) of xanthan gum
- 3 teaspoons (14 g) of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon (3 g) of salt
- of melted butter
- of warm water
[Edit]90-Second Microwave Keto Bread - 1 large egg
- of milk
- of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon (7 g) of coconut flour
- 1 tablespoon (6 g) of almond or hazelnut flour
- 1/4 teaspoon (1 g) of baking powder
- A pinch of salt
[Edit]Easy Almond Flour Keto Bread - Preheat your oven to . Before you start mixing up your bread, switch on your oven to .[2] Most ovens take about 15 minutes to preheat.
- Some ovens will beep to let you know when the oven has reached the desired temperature.
- Butter a loaf pan. Take a stick of cool or room-temperature butter and rub it over the inside of your loaf pan. Alternatively, soften the butter for a few seconds in the microwave, then use a pastry brush to smooth it over your pan.[3]
- If you warm up the butter in the microwave, take care not to melt it completely. Otherwise, it will separate, so you'll end up spreading more water than fat over the inside of your pan.
- Line the pan with parchment paper. Take a sheet of parchment paper and push it down into the pan. It should be long enough that of paper stick out past the edges of the pan on 2 sides.[4]
- You'll use the parchment paper to help you pull the bread out of the pan once it's cooked.
- Separate the whites and yolks from 6 eggs. Crack the eggs on your counter or tabletop, then carefully drop them into a bowl. Scoop the yolks out with your hands and put them in a separate bowl.[5] Since you're cracking a lot of eggs, use 3 bowls. After removing the yolk from an egg, pour the whites into a separate bowl from your working bowl. That way, if you accidentally break a yolk, it won't contaminate all your egg whites.
- Eggs separate more easily when they're cold, so separate your eggs first and then set them aside to warm up a little while you prepare your other ingredients.
- Ideally, your eggs should be about room temperature before you mix them in with the other ingredients.[6]
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Pour 1 3/4 cups (168 g) of blanched almond flour, 2 teaspoons (9 g) of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon (3 g) of salt into a large mixing bowl. Mix them together with a fork or wire whisk until they're well combined.[7]
- Using a whisk will help ensure that the dry ingredients are evenly mixed and distributed.[8]
- Almonds are rich in keto-friendly healthy fats.[9] Almond flour is a great alternative to carb-heavy, grain-based flour. Get it online or from your local health food store, or make your own!
- Mix the egg yolks and butter into the dry ingredients. Pour the 6 egg yolks into the bowl with the dry ingredients, along with , or 1 full-sized stick, of melted butter. Whisk the ingredients together with a fork or wire whisk.[10]
- Take care to break up the egg yolks and distribute them evenly throughout the mixture! It may help to puncture them with a fork.
- Beat the egg whites until they form soft peaks. In a separate mixing bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer on medium-high speed.[11] The whites should appear white and foamy, and they should form curled-over peaks when you lift the beater out of the egg mix.[12]
- Your egg whites may not mix properly if they're colder than room temperature or you leave any traces of yolk behind.
- Fold the egg whites into the flour mixture gradually. Take about 1/3 of the egg whites and gently stir them into the batter. Then, carefully fold in the rest of the egg whites.[13] To fold in the whites, scoop them out onto the top of the batter, then slice through them with a spatula, going deep enough to touch the bottom of the bowl. Scrape the batter up from the bottom of the bowl and fold it over the top. Turn the bowl 90° and repeat the folding action. Do this 1-2 more times until the egg whites are incorporated into the batter.[14]
- To keep the batter light and fluffy, don't stir the egg in thoroughly. It's okay if your batter appears a little streaky.
- Pour the batter into the pan and bake it for 25-30 minutes. Transfer your batter into the prepared pan and stick it in the oven. After about 25 minutes, check on your bread. If it looks golden brown on top, stick a toothpick into the center of the loaf. Your tasty keto loaf is done when the toothpick comes out clean![15]
- If it's not done yet, put it back for another 5 minutes, then check again. Keep checking at 5-minute intervals until it's just right.
- Allow the bread to cool completely before lifting it out of the pan. Once you're satisfied with your bread, set the pan on a rack to cool. After it's cool to the touch, grab the edges of the parchment paper and lift the bread out of the pan. Now it's ready to slice and serve![16]
- You can slice your bread and use it for sandwiches or toast.
- Wrap up any bread you don't use right away in cling wrap or foil.
- If you keep the bread well-wrapped, it usually keeps for about 5 days at room temperature.
[Edit]Egg-Free Keto Bread - Preheat your oven to . Switch on your oven to .[17] Let it heat up while you're mixing up the batter.
- This recipe only takes about 5 minutes to prepare, so give your oven a little extra time to heat up! Most ovens preheat in about 15 minutes.
- Line a loaf pan with parchment paper. Tear off some parchment paper and push it down into the loaf pan. This will prevent the bread from sticking to the sides of the pan.[18]
- You may find it helpful to grease the pan with a little butter or non-stick cooking spray before putting in the parchment. This will help the parchment stick to the pan.[19]
- Make your parchment paper wide enough that stick out past the sides of the pan. That way, you can grab the paper and lift the bread out of the pan when it's done cooking.
- Whisk all the dry ingredients together. Pour 2 cups (192 g) of almond flour, 2 cups (192 g) of powdered whey protein isolate, 1 tbsp (22 g) of xanthan gum, 3 teaspoons (14 g) of baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon (3 g) of salt into a large mixing bowl. Mix them together with a wire whisk or fork.[20]
- Whisking the ingredients together will help ensure that they're all evenly distributed. If you don't have a whisk, use a spatula.
- Whey protein powder is safe for most people, but it's best to avoid it if you have a dairy allergy or sensitivity. It can also interfere with certain medications, such as albendazole, alendronate, and some antibiotics.[21]
- You can get plain, unflavored whey protein powder at stores that sell vitamins and supplements. Buy xanthan gum online or in the baking section of your grocery store.
- Mix in the warm water and melted butter. Slowly pour of warm water over the flour mixture and stir it in until the ingredients are well mixed. Then, mix in of melted butter.[22] Gently stir the ingredients together with a spatula or spoon to mix them.
- Bake the bread in your prepared pan for 20-25 minutes. Pour the batter into the lined loaf pan, then stick it in the preheated oven. After about 20 minutes, check on your loaf. If it's done, it will look golden-brown on top and a toothpick inserted into the middle of the loaf will come out clean.[23]
- Let the loaf cool in the pan on a rack, then use the parchment paper to lift it out.
- Top off a slice with butter for a keto-friendly snack, or use it to make a tasty sandwich!
- Wrap up any bread you don't use right away in foil or plastic wrap. It will keep for about a week in the fridge.
[Edit]90-Second Microwave Keto Bread - Whisk the egg, oil, milk, flours, baking powder, and salt together. Pour 1 large egg, of milk, of olive oil, 1 tablespoon (7 g) of coconut flour, 1 tablespoon (6 g) of almond or hazelnut flour, 1/4 teaspoon (1 g) of baking powder, and a pinch of salt into a small mixing bowl. Whisk them together with a wire whisk or a fork.[24]
- If you want a little extra flavor, mix in 1/4 cup (28 g) of grated cheese or a spoonful of minced scallions or herbs.
- Coconut flour is a tasty alternative to almond flour. You can buy it at any store that sells organic baking ingredients.
- Pour the batter into a microwave-safe mug. Use a tall mug so that there's a little room for the bread to rise or bubble up in the microwave. Tap the bottom of the mug on a hard countertop a few times to encourage any air bubbles to rise to the surface.[25]
- If you have trouble with the bread sticking to the mug, swirl some melted butter or olive oil in it before adding in the batter.[26]
- Microwave the batter on high for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Stick your mug in the microwave and zap it for 90 seconds. Take it out and enjoy your tiny, tasty personal keto loaf![27]
- Let your bread cool for a couple minutes, then upend the mug over a cutting board. Slice the bread and toast it or eat it as-is.
- Not only is almond flour lower in carbs than wheat-based flour, but it's also full of healthy fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals.[28] Almond flour bread is both keto friendly and nutrient rich!

How to Fertilize an Apple Tree Posted: 30 Apr 2021 05:00 PM PDT Do you want to grow apples at home? Harvesting your very own apple crop is a rewarding, delicious way to get the most out of your yard. If you aren't totally sure how to start fertilizing your tree, we've got you covered. Keep reading to get all the answers to your frequently-asked questions. You're one step closer to tasty, hand-picked apples! [Edit]Do I have to fertilize my apple tree? - If your tree is thriving on it's own, you really don't need to fertilize it. Each year, your apple tree should grow an extra . You don't need to fertilize your apple tree if it's already growing at least a year. However, if your tree isn't growing that much, it probably needs fertilizer.[1]
- Fertilizing too much can actually stunt the growth of apple trees, so it's important to evaluate growth first.
[Edit]When should I fertilize my apple tree? - Nourish 1-to-2-year old trees twice a year—in the spring and summer. Experts recommend fertilizing your apple tree right after you plant it, and then a second time in early summer. During the second year, experts suggest fertilizing once in early spring, and a second time in early summer.[2]
- Fertilize mature apple trees once a year during the spring. Unlike other fruits, apple trees don't need to be fertilized multiple times each year. If your tree is more than 2 years old, you only need to apply fertilizer once in the springtime to kickstart growth.[3]
[Edit]What fertilizer should I use? - Do a soil test to see what your soil's needs are. Unfortunately, there isn't a one-size-fits-all fertilizer for apple trees. Instead, it really depends on where you live and the current soil conditions. A soil test will help you pinpoint which nutrients your soil needs so you can choose the right fertilizer.[4][5]
- Buy soil test kits online or at your local home improvement store.
- Pick a fertilizer based on your soil test results. Your test results will list a recommended NPK ratio—this is the percentage of nitrogen, phosphate, and potash that your soil needs. Write down this specific ratio, and head to a garden supply store. Then, buy a fertilizer with the same NPK ratio as your test results.[6]
- For instance, if your test results recommend a fertilizer with 15-5-10 NPK, buy fertilizer with a 15-5-10, 3-1-2, 9-3-6, or 12-4-8 ratio.
- If the nutrients in the soil are pretty even, some experts suggest going with a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer.[7][8]
[Edit]What other fertilizers can I use? - Try applying a nitrogen-rich fertilizer for mature trees. Apply of pure nitrogen for every year of your tree's age. Once your tree is at least 8 years old, cap off the nitrogen fertilizer at .[9]
- The rule applies to pure nitrogen. You can also use a 21-0-0 or 16-16-16 fertilizer, or a more organic fertilizer, like rabbit or steer manure. However, compared to the pure nitrogen, you'll need to use 5 times as much 21-0-0 fertilizer, 7 times as much 16-16-16 fertilizer, 35 times as much rabbit manure, and 70 times as much steer manure.
[Edit]How much fertilizer do I need for each application? - Apply of fertilizer for newly planted trees. After you first plant your apple tree, wait 3 weeks for the soil to settle. Then, spread of fertilizer around the tree to kickstart growth.
- Use of fertilizer for every of trunk width after that. In the following years, apply an extra of fertilizer for every of tree trunk. Cap off the fertilizer once you're using every year.[10]
- Some experts suggest adding an extra of fertilizer for each year of life. For instance, a newly planted tree gets a of fertilizer, a 2-year old tree gets , a 3-year old tree gets , and so on.[11] Pay attention to your tree's growth and adjust, as needed.
[Edit]How do I apply the fertilizer? - Spread the fertilizer on the ground beneath the tree. Don't place the fertilizer in a mound or put in on the actual tree trunk, or else your apple tree might get damaged. Instead, scatter the fertilizer evenly around the tree trunk.[12]
- You can water the soil after spreading the fertilizer.
[Edit]Why is my apple tree not fruiting? - You pruned or fertilized your tree too much. When you over-fertilize and over-prune, your apple tree spends more time growing its wood, and the tree doesn't yield any flowers or fruit. This can happen when you fertilize the grass near your apple tree, and your tree ends up absorbing some of the extra nitrogen.[13]
- Frost might be the culprit if you live in a cold area. If temperatures drop below while the tree is flowering, your apple tree might not produce fruit. To prevent this, plant your apple tree pretty close to your home, or on a more elevated section of land in your yard.[14]
- Pollen might be a factor. If your apple tree isn't pollinated very well, it might not produce any fruit. Experts recommend cross-pollinating apples and pears together. You could also plant crabapples and ornamental Bradford pears near your apples, as well.[15]
- If you live in the northeastern United States, consider applying 0.5 oz (13 g) of borax to each apple tree every 3 years. In this area, the soil is notoriously low on boron.[16]
- If your apple tree isn't getting enough zinc, spray it with a mixture of 1 tbsp (52 g) of zinc sulfate and of water. In the fall, spray the zinc all over your tree until it's dripping wet.[17]
