How to Wrap Silverware in Paper Napkins

Posted: 16 Jun 2021 01:00 AM PDT

Whether you're preparing for a special event or just want to add some flair to a dinner at home, wrapping silverware in a paper napkin adds a nice touch to any table. You can roll your silverware securely in the napkin, or fold it into a decorative pouch. Add your choice of color and finishing touches to make your silverware presentation amazing!

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Creating a Simple Silverware Roll

  1. Obtain cutlery and a square paper napkin. You can use any silverware or paper napkins you like. You can choose to use napkins that are all white, solid colored, or patterned. Just make sure they are square shaped and large enough to hold your silverware.[1]
Wrap Silverware in Paper Napkins Step 1.jpg
    • Make sure your paper napkins are high quality and durable. You do not want them to rip while folding.
    • Avoid cocktail napkins that are only square. Use lunch or dinner napkins, which are typically square, and large enough to hold standard size silverware.[2]
  2. Place the knife on the napkin diagonally. To begin, put your napkin flat on the table. Then, place your knife on the napkin so that it lies diagonally. The point of the knife should be just slightly past the corner point, about .[3]
Wrap Silverware in Paper Napkins Step 2.jpg
    • Where you place your knife is very important, as this how far your cutlery will stick out of the napkin roll when you're finished. Make sure the knife doesn't stick out too far, or your silverware may fall out of the napkin.
  3. Stack the spoon and fork on top of the knife. Once your knife is in place, set the fork directly on top of it, and then stack the spoon on the fork. They should fit in a neat stack, with the bottoms of their handles even with eachother. Hold the silverware in place so it doesn't fall over as you move on to the next step.[4]

  4. Fold the bottom corner over the ends of the silverware. While holding the cutlery stack in place, grab the bottom corner of the napkin with your other hand and fold it over the ends of the silverware. Make sure your silverware stays in place while you do this, because you don't want them to fall over.[5]

    • If the bottom corner does not fold over, move your silverware stack up slightly.
  5. Bring a side corner over the silverware and roll the silverware in the napkin. Grab a side corner of the napkin and fold it over the handles of the silverware towards the opposite corner. Fold it so that the silverware is snug in the napkin, but don't hold it too tight. You don't want the napkin to tear. Now that your silverware is wrapped snugly in the napkin fold, roll it over until your silverware holder is complete.[6]

  6. Use a napkin band to hold the silverware in place. If you're worried about your silverware roll unraveling, hold it in place with a paper napkin band. You can find napkin bands in a variety of colors online or in stores. Most are self-adhesive, so all you need to do is place it tightly around the completed napkin roll and secure it in place.[7]
Wrap Silverware in Paper Napkins Step 6.jpg
    • If you're using napkin rolls for a wedding or other special event, you can find some online stores that allow you to customize your napkin bands.
  7. Tie a string or ribbon around the napkin for added decoration. Add your personal style to the napkin roll by tying a ribbon or string around it. You can tie the ribbon or string in a simple knot, or make a bow, depending on your personal preference. If you used a napkin band to hold the napkin in place, you can tie the string or ribbon around the center of the band.[8]
Wrap Silverware in Paper Napkins Step 7.jpg
    • Match your silverware display to the current season or occasion. For example, for a graduation party, wrap silverware in a white napkin and a red ribbon to look like a rolled diploma.
    • You can place all of your rolled silverware in a basket for a nice silverware display at a buffet.

[Edit]Making a Decorative Silverware Pouch

  1. Get a square napkin with your choice of colors and patterns. If you want to create a decorative napkin pouch for your silverware, opt for a napkin style with a decorative pattern or picture instead of just plain white. This will give your table a fun and stylish look. There are many different patterns to choose from, especially during the holidays.
Wrap Silverware in Paper Napkins Step 8.jpg
    • Some decorative paper napkins have the colors and patterns on the outside but are blank on the inside. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully to ensure your pattern is showing when your silverware pouch is completed.
    • The napkins you choose can be any size, but make sure they are square-shaped.
  2. Unfold the napkin and place it face-up on the table. Paper napkins will come already folded. To begin your pouch, completely unfold the napkin and place it on the table face-up so the color side is showing. This is important so that, when your pouch is finished, the pattern you chose will be showing with your silverware.[9]

  3. Fold the napkin in half to make a rectangle. With the napkin lying face-up on the table, grab the bottom corners and fold along the crease so you have a rectangle. The corners nearest to you should perfectly align with the corners farthest from you. When you fold it like this, the back of the napkin should be showing. In other words, the colored pattern is facing inward.[10]

  4. Fold the napkin again so you have a square. Next, fold the napkin one more time by bringing the right side over to the left, being careful to align the corners. Now, you should have a square the same size as the one you began with, before you unfolded the napkin. At this point, however, the napkin pattern should be hidden. The back of the napkin is on the outside of the square now, and the fold should be on the right side.[11]

    • Make sure you fold along the crease so the square is even and straight.
  5. Fold the top-most layer of the napkin in half diagonally. Now that you have your square with the fold on the right side, bring the top-most layer of the left napkin corner over to the bottom right corner. This will create a diagonal fold going from the top right corner to the bottom left corner. Then, press it down to make a crease. This fold will expose your napkin pattern again.[12]

  6. Turn the napkin over and fold the right and left sides inward. Now, lift the left side of the napkin and turn it over to the other side. Fold the right side toward the center of the napkin about 1/3 of the way across its width. Then, do the same thing on the left side by folding it over the right side about 1/3 of the way. Press your folds down to make a defined crease. You should now have a thin rectangle with two folds, one overlapping the other.[13]

  7. Insert the left-side corner fold into the right-side corner. Open the left fold slightly, and you should see a small diagonal pouch in the corner of the napkin. Take the corner of the top fold and insert it into the corresponding corner pouch. This will keep your silverware in place.[14]

  8. Flip the napkin over and insert utensils in the pouch. Now, turn over your napkin and you should see a snug pouch. You can put your utensils in the napkin side by side in any order you choose. Then you're finished![15]

    • Be careful not to tear the paper napkin when inserting your utensils.
    • You can decorate your finished napkin pouch by tying a colored string or ribbon around it. But keep in mind, this type of napkin pouch works well without any extra embellishments; especially when the napkin already has a decorative pattern.

[Edit]Warnings

  • To avoid damaging the napkins, always touch the napkins with clean, dry hands.

How to Recycle Nespresso Pods

Posted: 15 Jun 2021 05:00 PM PDT

Nespresso machines are convenient and easy to use. Unfortunately, you can't throw your used pods in with your regular recycling—they're too small for most recycling machines and they're made out of a unique plastic and aluminum that most recycling plants can't process. Luckily, Nespresso offers several free and easy to use methods to responsibly dispose of their products. You can take the used pods to a collection point in a special Nespresso bag, or hand the bag to a delivery driver the next time they bring you a shipment. You can also take your pods to a Nespresso boutique or UPS shop. Keep in mind, you can actually reuse Nespresso pods 2-3 times before you recycle them.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Taking Your Pods to a Collection Point

  1. Order a Nespresso recycling bag with your next shipment. Before purchasing pods online, add a recycling bag to your cart. They are free and you can order 1-2 bags with any online order. The next time your order arrives, it will include a special bag designed to store the pods after you use them.[1]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 1.jpg
    • If you pick up your Nespresso pods from a boutique, they will have the recycling bags available for free. You cannot get them from a big-box retailer though.
  2. Find a nearby collection point by using Nespresso's recycling map. Search for collection points in your area by visiting https://www.nespresso.com/us/en/how-to-recycle-coffee-capsules. Enter your address to view a map of nearby collection points. There are Nespresso collection points in most countries that sell Nespresso products. Locate a collection point that is convenient for you.[2]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 2.jpg
    • A lot of collection points are in or near Nespresso retailers. This will make it easy to drop them off the next time you go to pick up some pods.
    • You can also use the collection point search engine in the Nespresso app for Android or iOS.
  3. Fill your bag with used pods and close it when it's full. Keep the bag near your Nespresso machine and toss the used pods in every time you make espresso. The bag can hold 200 original-sized capsules or 100 VerturoLine capsules. Once filled, seal it at the top by pressing the plastic tabs together and folding it over at the top.[3]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 3.jpg
    • There is only one size of recycling bag.
    • You can include the aluminum tabs that peel off the top of the pods.
    • Do not overfill your bag or it may not fit in the collection container.
  4. Place your pods in the container or drop them off at the customer service desk. Take your used pods to the collection point in the recycling bag. Some of the collection points are public bins that are sitting out in the lobby or entryway of a store. Others are held behind a customer service desk to ensure that no foreign objects end up in the Nespresso recycling container. Drop your bag in the container or leave it with a customer service clerk to recycle your pods.[4]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 4.jpg
    • The collection points are periodically collected by a Nespresso pickup service and taken to a special plant to be recycled.

[Edit]Dropping Nespresso Pods at a Boutique or UPS Store

  1. Locate a nearby UPS or Nespresso store. Use an online search engine to find a nearby UPS store or Nespresso boutique. You can take your used pods to most Nespresso stores and UPS shipping centers to have them shipped to a recycling plant.[5]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 5.jpg
  2. Call a UPS or Nespresso store to find out if and how they collect pods. Some UPS stores may not have the proper equipment for storing and shipping Nespresso pods and some retailers may not participate in the Nespresso recycling program. Call ahead to see if a store participates in the recycling program and ask them how you should package your pods.[6]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 6.jpg
    • This is a different service than the Nespresso collection point program. The collection points require the pods to be placed in the Nespresso recycling bags. While some of the boutiques and UPS stores may require the same bag, others will not.
  3. Take your used pods to the location in the container they specified. Bring your pods with you the next time you're going to a Nespresso shop or have some outgoing mail that you need to ship. You can use the Nespresso recycling bag if you want to ensure that the store will take them.[7]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 7.jpg
  4. Drop your used pods off with an employee to get them recycled. Let the clerk behind the counter know that you have some pods to recycle. They will either accept your pods and sort them on their own or ask you to place them in a special delivery container. The pods will be shipped to Nespresso for recycling.[8]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 8.jpg
    • There is no charge for this service.

[Edit]Returning Used Pods to the Delivery Driver

  1. Order a Nespresso recycling bag with your next order. You can order a special recycling bag for free the next time that you place an online order for coffee. As you go through your pods, place the used units in the special recycling bag.[9]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 9.jpg
  2. Place another order for Nespresso pods and a recycling bag when you're running low. Once you need to place another order, purchase a second recycling bag. This will make it easy to continue the recycling pickup process the next time that you get your coffee.[10]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 10.jpg
  3. Give your recycling bag to the delivery driver when he shows up. Wait for the delivery driver to bring you your order. Once they arrive, tell them that you have a Nespresso bag filled with used pods. The delivery driver will take your bag and bring it back to the shipment center on their truck.[11]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 11.jpg
    • There is no additional charge for giving your delivery driver a recycling bag to take back with them.
    • Continue ordering recycling bags every time you buy pods to repeat this process indefinitely.

[Edit]Reusing Your Pods

  1. Remove the cap and clean a used pod by rinsing it in cold water. You can reuse your pods 2-3 times after the first time that you've used them. To start, rip the aluminum foil cap off the pod and set it aside for later recycling. Tap the pod on the rim of a garbage can to remove most of the grounds. Place the pod in the sink and run it under cold water to remove residue and hard-to-remove grounds.[12]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 12.jpg
    • After 2-3 uses, a reused pod will start to lose its shape and won't be a viable option.
    • Dry your pod with a paper towel or cloth.
  2. Use scissors to cut a circular cover out of aluminum foil. Pull out a short length of aluminum foil. Place it over your pod and use scissors to cut around it. Leave an extra of aluminum foil hanging on each side of your pod. You don't have to compact the coffee if you don't want a strong cup.[13]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 13.jpg
    • It may be easier for you to cut a square of aluminum foil and then trim the edges off to make it circular.
  3. Fill your pod with grounds and leave 1 millimeter of space at the top. Use a spoon or scooper to fill your pod with grounds. Pat the grounds down with your thumb or spoon to compact them and increase the flavor of your espresso. Leave a small amount of space on top so that your aluminum foil can be compacted into your coffee when it brews.[14]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 14.jpg
    • If you leave too much space at the top, the aluminum foil may be pushed into the cup, sending grounds all over your Nespresso machine.
  4. Place the foil over your pod and wrap it under the lip. Place the aluminum foil flat across the top of your pod so that a little bit sticks out past each side of the brim. Apply a little pressure to the brim with your nondominant hand to set the aluminum foil in place as you use your free hand to wrap the foil under the lip of the brim. When you're done, pinch the aluminum foil against the brim to fix it permanently to your pod.[15]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 15.jpg
  5. Use your refilled pod the same way that you would use a normal pod. Place your pod in your Nespresso machine and use it as you normally would. The pod will function the same way that a standard Nespresso pod does. When you're done, you can repeat the process or put the pod in a Nespresso recycling bag.[16]
    Recycle Nespresso Pods Step 16.jpg
    • If your aluminum foil falls off, you'll have to clean the inside of your machine with a wet paper towel or cloth. This can be annoying, but it won't be particularly hard to do.

How to Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission

Posted: 15 Jun 2021 09:00 AM PDT

If you're new to driving a manual transmission, or a stick shift as it's commonly referred to, it can seem scary. It can also feel uncomfortable as you learn to transition between gears and you feel the vehicle shake and the RPMs run high. But driving a manual transmission smoothly is actually really easy. You need to know how to properly use the clutch, when to shift gears, and how to use the accelerator pedal correctly. After that, it takes lots of practice to make the gear transitions feel smooth.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Using the Clutch

  1. Keep your left foot resting on the clutch at all times. The clutch is the pedal all the way on the left and is what allows you to transition between gears. Knowing how to use the clutch when you change gears is key to driving smoothly when you're operating a manual transmission. To make sure you can engage the clutch whenever you need to, keep your left foot on it without applying any pressure.[1]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 1 Version 3.jpg
    • The pedal on the left is the clutch, the pedal in the center is the brake, and the pedal on the right is the accelerator or gas pedal.
  2. Press the clutch to the floor to put the engine in neutral. The neutral gear refers to the stage where no gear is engaged. The vehicle's engine must be in neutral in order for you to transition between the gears. Push the clutch pedal to the floor in a smooth and controlled fashion to put the engine in the neutral gear.[2]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 2 Version 3.jpg
    • Don't stomp or slam on the clutch or you could damage the pedal.
    • Be careful not to press the clutch to the floor after you try to move the gear shift or you could stall the engine and cause the vehicle to jolt and shake.
  3. Release the clutch slowly when you use the gear shift to transition smoothly. The gear shift is the stick in the center console of the vehicle that allows you to choose the gear you want to transition to. When it comes time for you to change gears, press the clutch to the floor to put the engine in the neutral gear, and slowly release the clutch as you switch the gear shift into another gear.[3]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 3 Version 3.jpg
    • Practice shifting gears in an empty parking lot or a quiet road so you can get used to releasing the clutch and transitioning smoothly.
  4. Let the clutch all the way up once the gear is engaged. After you've moved the gear shift to the gear you wanted to transition to, fully disengage the clutch by releasing your left foot. Keep your left foot gently pressed against the clutch so you can engage it when you need to change gears again.[4]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 4 Version 3.jpg
    • Don't rest the full weight of your foot on the clutch or you could accidentally engage it if you suddenly stop and the engine will be put in the neutral gear.

[Edit]Shifting Gears

  1. Press the clutch to the floor when you're ready to change gears. When it comes time to shift gears, use your left foot to engage the clutch by pushing the pedal to the floor.[5] Push the pedal down smoothly rather than stomping it. This will put the engine in neutral so you can transition between gears.[6]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 5 Version 3.jpg
    • Do not engage the clutch until you're ready to change gears or you could cause the car to lurch and make for an uncomfortable ride.
  2. Move the gear shift into the neutral position. The gear shift in the middle console has a center position that allows you to put the engine in the neutral gear. You'll know you're in the neutral position when you can wiggle the stick freely from side to side.[7]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 6 Version 3.jpg
    • The clutch must be engaged in order for you to move the gear shift into neutral.
  3. Shift into the next gear when the RPM reaches 2500. RPM refers to revolutions per minute and it's a measurement of how fast your engine is operating. On your dash is a gauge that shows the RPMs. When you're driving and the RPMs reach the 2500 range, it's time for you to shift into the next higher gear. Shifting when it's the right time will make the vehicle drive smoother.[8]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 7 Version 3.jpg
    • Shifting at the correct time will also keep your engine running well and will make it last longer.
  4. Release the clutch slowly and gently press on the accelerator. After you've moved the gear shift into the gear that you want, slowly release your left foot from the clutch as you gently apply pressure to the accelerator pedal. With practice, you will feel the engine change gears smoothly.[9]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 8 Version 3.jpg
    • Every engine is a little bit different. Practice changing gears to make the transition smoother.
  5. Remove any pressure from the clutch once the gear is engaged. Once the engine has transitioned to another gear and the accelerator is pressed, you can let up on the clutch. This will fully engage the engine in the gear you've shifted to.[10]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 9 Version 3.jpg
    • Keep your foot near the clutch in case you need to change gears again.

[Edit]Pressing the Accelerator

  1. Avoid removing your foot from the accelerator suddenly, if possible. The accelerator is what controls the engine's RPMs and the speed of the vehicle. If you suddenly release all of the pressure from the pedal, the car will jolt forward and could cause the passengers to lurch forward in their seats. [11]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 10 Version 3.jpg
    • If you need to suddenly brake, you must release all of the pressure from the accelerator pedal to press the brake with your right foot.
  2. Press on the accelerator gently to smoothly increase the vehicle's speed. When the engine is in gear, to increase your speed smoothly, continue to apply pressure with your right foot to the accelerator pedal. Continue to press until the RPMs get to the 2500 range on your dashboard display.[12]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 11 Version 3.jpg
    • Don't slam on the accelerator or the vehicle will launch forward and feel uncomfortable to anyone inside of it.
  3. Release the accelerator gently when you want to change gears. Once the RPMs have reached the 2500 range, it's time to change gears. Slowly pull your right foot off of the accelerator so the engine doesn't continue to ramp up RPMs as you place it in neutral gear to transition. If the RPMs are too high when you change gears, the engine will make a rattling sound and the vehicle will shake.[13]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 12 Version 3.jpg
    • Avoid releasing all of the pressure from the accelerator at once or the car will jolt forward and will feel unpleasant to the passengers.
  4. Apply a small amount of pressure to the accelerator as you release the clutch. After you shift the gear stick into a different gear, gently apply pressure with your right foot while you release pressure with your left foot on the clutch. Finding the balance as the gear takes hold is important to make the vehicle drive smoothly.[14]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 13 Version 3.jpg

[Edit]Operating Smoothly While Driving

  1. Slow down ahead of speed bumps and turns. To keep your vehicle moving smoothly, be sure to slow down well ahead of any speed bumps, turns, or stoplights that you approach. Engage the clutch to put the gear shift into the neutral position if you need to slow down to the point where you need to put the engine in a lower gear.[15]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 14 Version 3.jpg
    • Pay attention to road signs that will tell you when a speed bump or turn is coming up.
  2. Keep the vehicle in 1st gear in slow-moving traffic. If you're in traffic that's traveling at speeds up to about per hour, keep the engine in first gear so you can move forward steadily. The vehicle won't move forward if it's in the neutral gear.[16]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 15 Version 3.jpg
    • Shift the vehicle into second gear when the traffic gets up to about per hour.
    • Be sure to keep at least 1 car length in front of you in case you need to stop suddenly.
  3. Put the gear shift in the neutral position when traffic stops or slows to a crawl. If you're moving too slow in 1st gear, the engine could stall. Engage the clutch, shift the gear shift into neutral, and release the clutch to keep the engine in neutral. Let the vehicle roll and use your breaks to slow it down or stop if you need to.[17]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 16 Version 3.jpg
    • Don't keep the clutch held partway down. That's called "riding the clutch" and can damage and wear out your clutch.
  4. Downshift while using the breaks to slow down from a higher gear. Don't put the engine into the neutral gear then coast while using your breaks to slow down or you could cause the vehicle to jerk or the gears to grind. Instead, shift back down through the successive gears until you're in the gear that's best suited to maintain the speed that traffic is moving in.[18]
Drive Smoothly with a Manual Transmission Step 17 Version 3.jpg
    • Don't skip gears. For instance, don't shift from 4th gear straight to 2nd or it can cause the gears to grind and the vehicle to shake uncomfortably.

[Edit]Tips

  • Practice driving a manual transmission in a clear area like an empty parking lot or a road that isn't frequently traveled so you can get used to it.
