How to Grow Bean Sprouts Indoors

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 01:00 AM PDT

Bean sprouts are crunchy, tasty, and nutritious, and they're grown by germinating legumes, such as soybeans and mung beans. Most grocery stores carry sprouts, which are often used in sandwiches, salads, stir fries, soups, and other dishes. But you can easily grow bean sprouts at home, and all you need are a few simple tools and some dried beans. You can actually sprout a variety of beans, peas, seeds, and legumes, and the trick is to rinse and drain the beans multiple times a day to keep them moist as they germinate.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Washing and Soaking the Beans

  1. Sterilize your jar. Mason jars are ideal for sprouting, but you can use any wide-mouthed glass or plastic jar. Wash the jar well in hot, soapy water to remove dirt, dust, and any pathogens or particles that might be hiding in the container. Dry the jar with a clean towel and set it aside.

    • Growing sprouts can also lead to the growth of unwanted bacteria and fungi, which is why it's important to use sterilized equipment.
    • Always wash your hands before handling beans that you want to sprout.[1]
  2. Rinse the beans. Measure about ½ to ⅔ cup (100 to 133 g) of beans and transfer them to a clean bowl. Cover the beans with fresh water, and use your hands to swish the beans around. Transfer the beans to a colander to drain the water, and rinse them until the water runs clear. You can use just about any whole and dried bean, legume, or seed for sprouting, including[2]

    • Chickpeas
    • Alfalfa
    • Adzuki beans
    • Mung beans
    • Lentils
    • Sunflower seeds
    • Quinoa
  3. Cover the beans with fresh water. Transfer the beans to the sanitized jar. Fill the jar the rest of the way with clean room temperature water. Place cheesecloth or a clean towel over the mouth of the jar, and secure it in place with an elastic. This will allow airflow and prevent dirt and particles from floating into the jar.

    • For beans or legumes, fill the jar a quarter of the way with the bean of your choice. For seeds like alfalfa, use about 2 tablespoons (4 g) of seeds per mason jar. This will give the sprouts plenty of space to grow and allow air to circulate between the sprouts.[3]
  4. Leave the beans to soak overnight. Set the jar aside on the counter and let the beans soak for several hours. Very small grains like quinoa only need to be soaked for about three hours. Medium legumes like lentils only need to soak for about eight hours. Larger beans like kidney beans and chickpeas should soak for 12 hours.[4]

    • As the bean soak, they'll absorb water and grow in size, and this will kick start the germination process.[5]

[Edit]Sprouting the Beans

  1. Drain and rinse the beans. When the beans have had enough time to soak and double in size, remove the cheesecloth and drain out the water. Cover the beans with fresh water and swirl them around gently to wash them. Drain the water and put the cheesecloth back over the mouth of the jar.[6]

  2. Tip the mason jar. As the sprouts grow, you want to keep the jar at a 45-degree angle with the mouth of the jar facing down. This will allow excess moisture to drain out and air to circulate. You may have to prop the jar up against something to keep it at the right angle, or store it on a wire cooling or dish rack.

    • While the beans have to remain moist to germinate, you don't want any excess water in the jar, because this could lead to mold and bacterial growth.[7]
  3. Store the jar in a shaded location. Place the jar full of beans somewhere that's room temperature and away from direct sunlight. You don't have to store the beans in the dark, but keep them out of the sun, otherwise they may start to cook.

  4. Rinse the sprouts at least twice daily. As the sprouts grow, it's important to rinse them regularly to keep pathogens at bay and to keep the sprouts moist. Remove the cheesecloth, cover the sprouts with clean water, drain the sprouts, and cover the mouth with the cheesecloth again. Tilt the jar and return the sprouts to their growing location.
Grow Bean Sprouts Indoors Step 8 Version 4.jpg
    • You can rinse the sprouts as often as you like, but make sure to do it every eight to 12 hours at least, or as the beans dry out.[8]
  5. Let the sprouts grow for several days until they reach the desired length. Different beans and legumes will require different sprouting times, but the sprouts will be ready in two to six days. You can eat the sprouts as soon as they reach the same length as the original bean. You can also continue letting the sprouts grow for up to five or six days, until they reach a few inches (several centimeters) in length.[9]

  6. Rinse the sprouts before eating. When the sprouts have reached the desired length, remove the cheesecloth and transfer the sprouts to a colander. Rinse them with clean water, and leave them to drip dry for a few minutes, or pat them dry with a clean towel.[10]

  7. Enjoy your sprouts and store leftovers in the refrigerator. There are many ways that you can eat your sprouts, including cooking them or eating them raw. Sprouts also make a delicious snack all on their own. Wrap leftover sprouts in a piece of clean paper towel and transfer them to a freezer bag or airtight container.

    • Sprouts will keep in the refrigerator for two to three days.[11]

[Edit]Using Fresh Sprouts

  1. Enjoy them raw in salads. Sprouts are delicious and packed with nutrients, and many people enjoy them raw. You can eat handfuls of sprouts on their own, or you can toss them into your favorites salads. Salads that go well with sprouts include:

    • Garden salad
    • Cobb salad
    • Bean salad
  2. Eat them on a sandwich. Cheese, vegetable, and meat sandwiches can all benefit from a layer of fresh sprouts. Certain sprouts, such as alfalfa and broccoli, are particularly popular on sandwiches.[12] For a simple sandwich or wrap with sprouts, try:

    • Mustard
    • Cheese
    • Lettuce
    • Tomato
    • Sprouts
    • Avocado
  3. Steam them. Steaming sprouts and other vegetables is a great way to cook them, because steaming preserves many of the nutrients. Smaller sprouts like lentils will be cooked in about five minutes, and larger ones like chickpeas will require about 15 minutes.

    • Avoid cooking alfalfa, as it can become mushy.[13]
  4. Add them to stir fries. Another way to cook sprouts is stir frying, and you can add sprouts to a vegetable, meat, or fish stir fry.[14] To preserve the nutrients and texture of the sprouts, add them to the stir fry in the last five to 10 minutes of cooking.

    • Red and black beans
    • Quinoa
    • Lentils
    • Chickpeas

[Edit]Warnings

  • Purchase beans from a reputable natural foods store. Beans sold in gardening packets are often chemically treated, so they should be avoided.
  • When sprouting alfalfa, place the seeds in a sunny location for a few hours. Then, rinse them in a bowl with tap water. Remove any dried hulls that float to the top.

How to Get Ketchup Out of Clothes

Posted: 27 Apr 2022 05:00 PM PDT

Ketchup is a delicious condiment that can enhance the flavor of many meals. Unfortunately, it can also spill easily. Don't worry if you get a drop of ketchup on your favorite clothes, though. With some quick, diligent cleaning, you can get the stain out without leaving any trace of your condiment mishap!

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Treating a Stain Away from Home

  1. Remove as much of the spilled ketchup as possible. Use a napkin or absorbent paper towel to blot up the ketchup. You can also scrape the ketchup off with a spoon or the back of a butter knife if you have one handy.
Get Ketchup Out of Clothes Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    • The easiest way to get rid of a ketchup stain is to treat it immediately. As soon as you notice the spill, wipe up all the excess ketchup that you can without spreading it over unstained areas of your clothes.[1]
    • Don't rub the spill because this can push the ketchup farther into the fibers of the clothes.[2]
  2. Saturate the stained area with water. As soon as possible, turn the article of clothing inside out and flush it out with cold water. You want the water to run over the stain from back to front so that you don't push the ketchup deeper into the fabric.[3]

    • If you aren't in a place where you can take off the article of clothing, saturate the stained area as much as possible while you're still wearing the clothes. If you can't get to a bathroom and running water, dip a napkin into a glass of water and blot it onto the stained area.
  3. Apply an on-the-go stain remover instead of water. If you're carrying a stain remover pen in your pocket or purse, you can use it in place of water once you've wiped the excess ketchup off your clothes. Remove the cap and press the tip of the pen onto the stain to release the stain remover.

    • Test the stain remover on a small, hidden part of your clothes first to make sure it won't discolor your fabric. It doesn't contain bleach, so it is safe to use on most colorfast, machine washable fabrics and dry-cleanable fabrics.
  4. Rub the stain remover into the fabric. Lightly saturate your clothes with the stain remover solution, then rub it gently into the entire stained area with the tip of the pen. Repeat the process of pressing and rubbing the fabric with the pen as needed until the stain lightens or disappears.

    • When you've finished using the stain remover pen, blot off any excess solution with a clean cloth or napkin.
  5. Launder your clothes as you normally would when you get home. Whether you've treated your stain with water or stain remover, clean the article of clothing again when you get home and have access to detergent and a washing machine. If the stain is still visible, follow the tips for at-home stain removal.

    • Be sure to check the garment's care tag before setting the water temperature and cycle type!

[Edit]Laundering a Stain at Home

  1. Remove all excess ketchup from the fabric. If the ketchup is fresh, blot it off with a napkin or absorbent paper towel, or use a spoon or the back of a butter knife to wipe it away. If the ketchup is dried on already, chip it off with the spoon or knife.[4]
Get Ketchup Out of Clothes Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • Take care if you're wiping up fresh ketchup not to spread it onto unstained areas of clothes.
  2. Flush the stain with cold running water from the back. Let the cold water flow through the fabric. Don't use hot water, which can set the stain. You should also avoid rinsing the stain from the front or you'll push the ketchup farther into the fabric.[5]

  3. Rub liquid detergent into the stain. Work the detergent gently into the fabric in a circular motion. Start at the outside edge of the stain and move inward to minimize the chances of the stain spreading.

    • This removes the stain's oil base.[6]
  4. Let the detergent sit for about 5 minutes and then rinse. Use cold water to rinse the detergent out of the stain. Be thorough to ensure all the detergent is removed.[7]

  5. Apply white vinegar if your garment is white or colorfast. Use a sponge to dab a small amount of white vinegar into the stain area. This acts as a bleaching agent. Then rinse well with cold water.[8]

    • If you don't have white vinegar, try using hydrogen peroxide. You can also try lemon juice, but only if your clothing is white. Lemon juice can bleach colored clothing.
    • Do a small spot test on an inconspicuous piece of fabric before using a bleaching agent.[9]
  6. Repeat this process until you can't see the stain. Hold the garment up to the light to make sure you can't see any trace of pink or red. Repeat the steps of applying detergent to the stain, rinsing it out, and then applying a bleaching agent as many times as needed until you can't see the stain anymore.[10]

  7. Apply a pre-wash stain remover. Use a store-bought stain remover, or make your own homemade stain remover in a pinch. Cover the area where the stain was and let the stain remover sit for a minimum of 5 minutes.[11]

    • To make a quick stain remover from ingredients around your house, combine of white vinegar with baking soda and of water in an empty spray bottle. Shake well to mix the ingredients together and spray onto your clothes.[12]
  8. Launder the article of clothing normally. Wash your clothes in the washing machine according to their usual care instructions. Use the same amount of laundry detergent that you'd normally use.[13]
Get Ketchup Out of Clothes Step 13 Version 2.jpg
    • Instructions for laundering the garment are found on a tag inside the clothes.
  9. Rub liquid laundry detergent into the stain if it remains after the first wash. Then soak the article of clothing in warm water for 30 minutes and rinse the fabric well. If the stain still lingers, treat it again with pre-wash stain remover and wash it again according to the clothing's care instructions.[14]
Get Ketchup Out of Clothes Step 14 Version 2.jpg
    • Only use bleach when washing your clothing in the washing machine if you've checked that it's safe according to the care instructions.
    • Never use chlorine bleach on colored fabric. Use all-fabric bleach if your clothing isn't white.
  10. Let the clothes air dry. The dryer can set a stain that hasn't been fully removed. Make sure that all trace of the stain is gone before placing items in the dryer. To be on the safe side, you may want to hang the clothes to air-dry until you're sure the stain is completely gone.[15]
