How to Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet

Posted: 04 Jun 2022 01:00 AM PDT

Most cat owners will catch their kitty scratching at a patch of carpet sooner or later, but did you know that it's a natural and healthy part of feline behavior? If you want to save your carpet and keep your cat happy, we've got you covered. There are many ways to easily lure a cat away from the carpet! In this article, we'll show you how to redirect your cat's behavior by giving them more appealing options to scratch, while also making the rug less tempting.

This article is based on an interview with our certified feline training and behavior specialist and certified cat behavior consultant, Molly DeVoss, founder of Cat Behavior Solutions.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Set up scratching a post.

  1. Cats need to scratch for their health, so give them a place to do it. Accept that your cat will always instinctively scratch to groom their claws. However, they won't scratch the carpet if you give them an alternative, such as designated scratching posts in each room with carpeting. To reinforce good behavior, give your cat a treat when you see them using the scratcher correctly.[1]
Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet Step 1.jpg
    • Pick a scratching post that is sturdy and tall enough for your cat to stretch out when using it, as they often enjoy a full back stretch.
    • Place the scratcher either next to the cat's bed or next to areas of the carpet that they normally scratch to redirect their attention and make sure it's accessible. Your cat may just be scratching the rug for convenience!

[Edit]Provide a variety of scratchers.

  1. Try differently shaped and sized scratchers to see what your cat likes. Often, if a cat isn't interested in a post, horizontal scratchers are an appealing alternative. They can also double as beds, and some are designed for cats to rest on after scratching. You could also try a hanging cat scratcher, or an unusually-shaped post that looks more interesting than a regular scratcher.[2]
Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet Step 2.jpg
    • Try different materials, too. Scratchers can be made using cardboard, carpet, sisal, upholstery, and more. You never know what your cat will prefer when given a choice.

[Edit]Rub catnip into the scratcher.

  1. Catnip-scented scratchers attract cats so they don't scratch the rug. If simply placing a scratcher in a convenient location isn't redirecting your cat's attention enough, consider sprinkling some catnip on the scratcher. [3] This will make the scratcher more appealing and lure your cat into using that instead of the carpet.
Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet Step 3.jpg
    • Alternatively, you could try Feliscratch, a product that mimics cat pheromones to attract cats over to the scratching post.[4]
    • Hanging toys on the scratcher can also draw cats over.

[Edit]Keep your cat's claws trimmed.

  1. Cats scratch to keep their claws short, so a trim is helpful for them. Gently hold your cat's paw when you trim their nails and give them a treat after each successful clip. Take care not to cut the quick, which is the solid pink park of the claw where nerves and blood are; stick to the nail's white, partially clear area.[5]
Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet Step 4.jpg
    • It's easiest to clip your cat's nails when they're relaxed and sleepy and get them used to the sound of the nail clippers beforehand.
    • If you don't feel confident clipping your cat's nails, a veterinarian or groomer can easily do it for a small fee.
    • Declawing your cat is ultimately painful and unnecessary, as it involves removing the tip of your cat's finger. Steer clear of this procedure and remember that there are better ways to stop a cat from scratching![6]

[Edit]Cover up the carpet.

  1. Place obstacles or furniture over the spot your cat likes to scratch. If they ignore the scratching posts you put up, deter your cat from scratching by simply making sure they can't. Often, cats will pick a particular spot on the rug and scratch there; cover it with a chair or couch, or even a horizontal scratcher, so your cat has no choice but to use it.[7]
Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet Step 5.jpg

[Edit]Spray the carpet with a citrus scent.

  1. Cats don't like citrus, so a spray can make them avoid the rug. They have powerful noses that are very sensitive to odors—and luckily, cats dislike a few enjoyable scents for humans. Use a citrus spray or another scented spray that will smell bad to your cat, and spray it over the carpet. There are even some specifically-designed cat deterrent sprays you can invest in.[8]
Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet Step 6.jpg
    • Other scents cats dislike include lavender, peppermint, and lemongrass.
    • You probably won't smell much (and it'll dissipate fast if you do), but your cat will smell it for days.

[Edit]Redirect the cat with fake pheromones.

  1. Apply a product that mimics pheromones to problem areas of the rug. Pheromones can also fool your cat into thinking another cat has already laid claim to the rug, causing them to retreat. You can also use plug in diffusers that imitate hormones to generally calm your cat down, making them less likely to scratch.[9]
Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet Step 7.jpg
    • Don't worry about smells; humans' weaker noses can't smell the pheromone spray.

[Edit]Clean the carpets.

  1. A cat might return to scent-marked carpets, so wash them regularly. This also applies to visible marks, which cats can spot and return when they want to scratch. You don't have to do anything too intense for this: just wash spots with clean, cool water and soap. If necessary, you can use a pet odor neutralizer when you're done to make sure it doesn't still smell like your cat.[10]
Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet Step 8.jpg
    • Cleaning chemicals like ammonia and vinegar might motivate your cat to mark the area with their scent again, so avoid using them.

[Edit]Keep your cat calm and happy.

  1. Give your cat toys, affection, and stimulation to reduce their anxiety. Make sure your cat is content by playing with them daily, ensuring that there's enough food and water to go around, and showering them with love and attention when they behave. This will stop them from being destructive out of boredom or anxiety, which can happen when your cat wants more time with you.
Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet Step 9.jpg
    • Get toys that encourage your cat's hunting drive, such as a toy on a string.[11]
    • Aside from the basics, cats get stressed when introduced to a new feline member of the household. Introduce them slowly to help your cat acclimate with as little anxiety as possible.

[Edit]Make sure each cat has their own space.

  1. Provide a scratching post for each cat you have. Position each cat's scratch close to their favorite napping spot for easy access; this way, your cat can wake up and use the scratcher to stretch out. Cats like to be solitary and should each have a designated spot to go take care of their claws. If your cat has to compete, they may wander over to the carpet for a scratch instead.
Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet Step 10.jpg

[Edit]Train new kittens to use scratching posts.

  1. Kittens won't learn to scratch the rug if you give them a place to do it. Cats learn through experience, so a young kitten can be taught to use a scratching post before the carpets become an issue.[12] Have scratchers available when you bring your kitten home for the first time, and use either treats or a little catnip to provide incentive right off the bat.
Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet Step 11.jpg
    • Even if your kitten seems relatively calm, remember: all cats need to scratch, so it's not a question of "if," but rather where you want them to do it.

[Edit]Get nail caps for your cat's claws.

  1. Nail caps are a harmless and painless way to blunt your cat's claws. Use nail cap glue to bind these soft vinyl caps to each claw and let your cat scratch away! Your cat won't leave behind any marks with nail caps, and they can still extend and retract claws as usual. Replace the caps every 4 to 6 weeks when they start to lose effectiveness.[13]
Stop Your Cat from Scratching the Carpet Step 12.jpg
    • If you don't feel confident applying the nail caps, a veterinarian or groomer can do this for you.
    • Keep in mind that nail caps aren't ideal for cats that spend time outdoors, as they take away the cat's main defense mechanism.
    • Though nail caps don't harm cats at all, not every cat reacts the same. Some may fuss over them for the first couple of applications, while others adjust effortlessly. Be patient and give your cat a few days to warm up to them.

How to What to Text Instead of Whats Up

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 05:00 PM PDT

Are you looking for an original, clever way to ask someone, "what's up?" Whether you're chatting with a friend, crush, family member, or partner, switching up your language is an easy way to keep your text exchanges engaging and memorable. Keep reading for a comprehensive list of things to say in place of "what's up," and learn how to level up your texting skills!

This article is based on an interview with our dating and relationship coach, Suzanna Mathews, founder of The Date Maven.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]"What's shakin', bacon?"

  1. Use a funny or cheeky version of the usual "what's up?" Shake it up if you just want to check in with your texting partner (but you're tired of the same old conversation starter). There are plenty of phrases along the lines of "what's up" that are still more entertaining. Have fun with it, and try a goofy question like:
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 1.jpg
    • "Hey! What's cooking?"
    • "Hey, Einstein! Still cracking the old theory?"
    • "How's life been sailing lately? ⛵️"
    • "What's the word, hummingbird?! 😊"

[Edit]"Thought this might make you laugh!"

  1. Send them a funny meme or video to grab their attention.[1] You can instantly brighten anyone's day (and get an exchange going) by texting them something funny. Find a meme, video, or funny social media post you think your texting partner would like. If you don't know their sense of humor well yet, send them something that made you laugh.
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 2.jpg
    • "I can't stop laughing at this puppy video! 😂🐶 What do you think?"
    • "You like Lord of the Rings, right? These Tumblr memes are killing me!"

[Edit]"Look at my view today!"

  1. Snap an intriguing picture and send it to them.[2] Give your texting partner little snapshots into your daily life. Whether you take a photo of the view outside your window or your pet being particularly cute, you can wordlessly show the other person what you're up to and prompt them to talk about their day.
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 3.jpg
    • "Check out this insane coffee art! ☕️ Where's your fave place to get coffee??"
    • "Found the coolest little park on my run! Have you ever been here?"
    • "OMG, my cat is being too cute this morning. I hope your morning has been just as delightful! 😊"

[Edit]"Check out this awesome song!"

  1. Share little things that show the other person who you are.[3] Songs and music are a great way to help someone get to know you, but you could also mention a tv show, book, or another fun activity. Ask them what they think of each cool song or movie you text them about, and for a recommendation in return. Over time, you'll learn more about one another's tastes.
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 4.jpg
    • "I heard this on the radio, and I thought you might like it. Thoughts?"
    • "WHOA. The new BTS music video is 🔥, check it out!!"
    • "Just finished watching The Batman, and I feel like it's your kind of movie. Have you checked it out yet?"

[Edit]"Tell me about your day using only emojis. 🤯"

  1. Emojis can perk up a boring text message and make it visually interesting. They can also add extra emotion and depth to your message; "What's up? 😊" feels much more inviting than "What's up?" with the only difference being one simple emoji.[4] Add emojis to your opening text, or take it a step further and send a text with only emojis—giving the other person a fun message to decipher.
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 5.jpg
    • "You'll NEVER guess what happened today! 🍿🤏😯"
    • "Good morning, ☀️! What do you have planned today? 😉🧡"
    • "❓⬆️" and "❓👆" can both mean "what's up?" in emoji-speak.

[Edit]"Check out this GIF! 😂"

  1. Use a GIF to say hello and entertain your texting buddy. Like emojis, GIFs add color and whimsy to an otherwise plain text message. Rather than texting "what's up," text the other person a GIF to get their attention. Select a GIF you think they'd laugh at or a GIF relating to one of your mutual interests (a TV show or movie, for example.)
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 6.jpg
    • Alternatively, there are tons of GIFs with "what's up" text pasted over a goofy video clip. Pick one of those and send it to someone so they know you want to chat!
    • If you want to be a little flirty and funny, send the classic Friends GIF of Joey saying, "How you doin'?"

[Edit]"What's your opinion on cats versus dogs?"

  1. Engage your texting partner by asking for their opinion. Getting their opinion is a great way to show someone that you're interested in what they have to say and value their thoughts. If you're still building a friendship, it helps you get to know them better. Start off a text exchange with a quick question about their preferences, which can get them talking even easier than "what's up?" [5]
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 7.jpg
    • "I can't decide what to have for dinner! Should I make pasta or tacos?"
    • "Important question! Pineapple on pizza: yes or no?"
    • "Idk what to wear for this work event! Can I get your opinion?"

[Edit]"What was the highlight of your day?"

  1. Ask subtle questions that let you learn as much information as possible. For example, when you ask about the highlights of their day, you're also quietly asking the other person about the things they're most passionate about.[6] Rather than a simple "what's up," ask them more specific questions about their daily life to prompt a more detailed response.
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 8.jpg
    • "Working on anything exciting at the moment?"
    • "Hey there! Any juice news you wanna talk about? 😉"
    • "How did work go today? Did you get that presentation done?"

[Edit]"Where would you go if you could travel anywhere?"

  1. Pose a creative, open-ended question to keep the conversation flowing. Open-ended questions are any query that requires a longer answer than "yes" or "no." Once you get the other person talking, it's easy to have a lengthy and entertaining exchange.[7]
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 9.jpg
    • "If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?"
    • "What are you interested in that most people aren't?"
    • "If you could have a superpower, which one would you choose and why?"

[Edit]"Our favorite YouTuber just dropped a new video!"

  1. Bring up a shared interest between the two of you. When you discuss a common interest, it's easier for the other person to text you back—and because they're passionate about it, they'll probably text you back as soon as possible. You're also showing them that you remember the things you've learned about them, which would make anyone feel good about themselves.
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 10.jpg
    • "Hey! Are you watching the Packers game this weekend?"
    • "Did you see the news? There's gonna be another season of Criminal Minds! We've got to watch it together 😆"
    • "We should hit up an amusement park soon! You're the only person I know as passionate about roller coasters as I am. 😍"

[Edit]"I have a random question! Ready?"

  1. Text them to share all your spontaneous thoughts. You could send an obscure fact you learned or ask them an unconventional yet entertaining question to make them smile. So long as you begin your text with "random idea" or "random fun fact," your texting partner won't be taken aback by the sudden shift in subject.[8]
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 11.jpg
    • "Random question! Aliens: are they real or not?? 👽"
    • "Fun fact! I was today years old when I found out that a group of porcupines is called a prickle. 🥺"
    • "Did you know that the entire world's population could fit inside Los Angeles? 😵‍ Wild!"

[Edit]"Riddle me this! 😉"

  1. Send a puzzle or riddle to get your texting partner's mind racing. If the person you're texting is a fan of brain-teasers, capture their interest with a thought-provoking text. It's more engaging than a simple "what's up," and it's also a fun distraction for your texting partner to think over as they go about their day.
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 12.jpg
    • "What word is spelled incorrectly in every single dictionary?" (The answer is "incorrectly.")
    • "What kind of coat is always wet when you put it on?" (The answer is "a coat of paint.")
    • "Today's Wordle has me STUMPED. Any suggestions?"

[Edit]"Want to grab lunch this week?"

  1. If your goal is to hang out in person, ask them to do something with you. This should be easy enough for friends and family—just make a lighthearted suggestion. If you're texting a crush, keep your request simple and see if they're interested in engaging with you.[9] Politely and sincerely propose a date idea you think might be fun!
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 13.jpg
    • "I can't believe we haven't hung out in 2 weeks! Let's hit up the arcade tomorrow. 😊"
    • "I miss you! Wanna grab a coffee this week and catch up?"
    • "I've been really looking forward to meeting in person. Can I take you to a movie on Friday?"

[Edit]"What's your favorite pick-up line?"

  1. If you're texting a crush, ask them flirty questions. Share a few cheesy pick-up lines of your own, too! At the very least, you can make your crush smile and kick off the texting exchange on a much more interesting note. And if you play your cards right, you might even score a date out of the deal.
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 14.jpg
    • "I've never minded a little cheese myself. On an unrelated note, do you ever feel tired after running through my thoughts all day?"
    • "Do you like cheesy pick-up lines? Because if you were words on a page, you'd be fine print!"

[Edit]"Hey, how are you today?"

  1. Keep it simple and show them you're available for an in-depth chat.[10] Try using a thoughtful and sincere alternative to "what's up" that shows your texting partner you're genuinely curious about how they're doing at the moment. Ask them about their day, how they're feeling, or even ask them if they have time for a longer chat on the phone.
What to Text Instead of Whats Up Step 15.jpg
    • "Got time to talk? Let's catch up!"
    • "How are you holding up?"
    • "What have you been doing since we last talked?"
    • "How's every little thing in your life? 😊"

How to Find a Stud in a Plaster Wall

Posted: 03 Jun 2022 09:00 AM PDT

Are you trying to hang something up on a plaster wall, but want to make sure it stays put? While you can attach lighter objects to the wooden slats, heavy TVs or decor need a sturdy stud for a base. Even though plaster walls are a little too thick for standard stud finders to work, there are still other easy ways to locate a stud in your wall. Keep reading for everything you need to know about finding a stud so you can hang your items securely!

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Listen for a deep thud when you knock on your wall.

  1. A change in pitch when you're knocking signals there's a stud. Lightly tap along your wall with your knuckles and listen to the sound. If you hear an echoey hollow sound, it means there's nothing behind the wall where you're tapping. Move across your wall and keep tapping until you hear a solid thunk, which means there's a stud behind the plaster.[1]
Find a Stud in a Plaster Wall Step 1.jpg
    • Listen very carefully when you do a knock test since the horizontal wooden slats behind the plaster could make a similar noise.

[Edit]Look for where baseboards are nailed to your wall.

  1. Baseboards are almost always nailed into the studs. Check the baseboards along the floor to see if you can find nail heads or divots in the wood. Keep your eyes peeled since the nail holes are usually painted over or filled in when they're finished. If you find a spot where the baseboard is nailed in, knock on the wall to see if it makes a solid thunk to make sure there's a stud there.[2]
Find a Stud in a Plaster Wall Step 2.jpg
    • If the wall sounds hollow when you tap on it, then try to find another nail in the baseboards.

[Edit]Run a metal detector over your wall.

  1. Metal detectors find where slats are nailed into studs. Use a small handheld metal detector and place the edge flush against your wall. Slowly run the detector across your wall in long sweeping motions. When you hear the metal detector beep, run it over the wall even slower to zero in on the position of the nails. Mark the stud's location with a pencil so you don't forget it.[3]
Find a Stud in a Plaster Wall Step 3.jpg
    • You may get inaccurate readings if your plaster wall has a wire mesh support.

[Edit]Hold a strong magnet against your wall.

  1. The magnet will stick to the hardware already in your studs. Use a heavy-duty magnet rather than a small flimsy one on your fridge. Tie a piece of string around the magnet and hold it against your wall. Walk slowly along the wall, dragging the magnet across the surface to see if it sticks. If it ever gets stuck, it could mean that there's a stud behind the plaster.[4]
Find a Stud in a Plaster Wall Step 4.jpg
    • The magnet picks up where the horizontal wooden slats are nailed into the studs.
    • If you have metal slats or supports behind your plaster, then a magnet won't give you conclusive results and you'll need to try another test.

[Edit]Use a magnetic stud finder.

  1. Magnetic stud finders stick to where your studs are nailed to the wall frame. A magnetic stud finder is a small cube- or bar-shaped tool that's attracted to nails and screws. Hold the magnetic stud finder against the wall about from the floor or ceiling. Slowly walk the magnet across your wall until you meet resistance, which means you've hit a stud.[5]
Find a Stud in a Plaster Wall Step 5.jpg
    • Magnetic stud finders won't work if you have metal supports instead of wood behind the plaster.

[Edit]Find a stud attached to an outlet or switch.

  1. Electrical boxes are attached to studs that you can use as references. If you have a wall outlet, switch, or any other type of electrical box on the wall, there's a stud running along either the left or right side.[6] Take the faceplate off of the outlet or switch and position a screwdriver in the bottom corner between the electrical box and the plaster. Push the screwdriver in gently, and if it meets resistance, then the stud is on that side of the box.[7]
Find a Stud in a Plaster Wall Step 6.jpg

[Edit]Measure from known studs.

  1. Studs are the same distance apart throughout your entire wall. If you know the location of one stud but you want to find another in your wall, you can easily measure them. Since the centers of studs are usually apart, just stretch a tape measure across your wall starting on the known stud. Mark your measurement on the wall so you know where the other studs are located.[8]
Find a Stud in a Plaster Wall Step 7.jpg
    • Studs run vertically up the wall, so any that you find will span from the floor to the ceiling.

[Edit]Drill into the wall where you think there's a stud.

  1. You'll feel resistance the entire time if you hit a stud. Use the smallest drill bit made for wood that came with an electric drill. If you think you found a stud in your wall, position the drill right above your baseboards and slowly drill a hole into the wall. If the drill bit has some resistance before easily slipping through the wall, then you missed the stud.[9]
Find a Stud in a Plaster Wall Step 8.jpg
    • You can easily patch the hole in your wall if you missed the stud.
    • Avoid using a hammer and nail on plaster walls since you could easily crack or chip the finish.

[Edit]Tips

  • If you can't find any studs to use to hang up lighter objects, like pictures or art, then you can use wall anchors instead.

[Edit]Ingredients

[Edit]Pan-Fried Cauliflower Florets

  • 1 small cauliflower
  • 2 eggs
  • of milk
  • of all purpose flour
  • of salt
  • of ground pepper
  • pinch of ground cayenne pepper to taste (optional)
  • of olive oil

Yields 4 Servings

[Edit]Deep-Fried Cauliflower

  • 1 small head of cauliflower
  • of flour
  • of cornstarch
  • of baking powder
  • of salt
  • of water
  • of hot sauce
  • of seasoned breadcrumbs
  • of oil for frying, safflower or other

Yields 6 Servings

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Pan-Fried Cauliflower Florets

  1. Boil the whole cauliflower head. Bring a pot of water to a boil and submerge the entire cauliflower head. Let it boil for about 7-10 minutes, depending on how cooked you like your vegetables to be.[1]

  2. Rinse the cauliflower in cool water and chop it into florets. Use a knife to cut up the cauliflower head into pieces, or roughly bite-size. Try to keep them all a similar size so that they'll fry evenly. The more flat sides your florets have, the easier you'll find it to fry them.[2]

  3. Prepare 2 mixtures for the batter. In one small container, whisk together 2 eggs and of milk. In another small container, combine of flour, each of salt and black pepper, and a pinch of ground cayenne pepper if you want a bit of extra spice.[3]

  4. Dip each cauliflower floret into the egg mixture. Use tongs or a fork to place one floret at a time into the mixture. Turn and swish the floret around to cover it generously with the egg batter.[4]

  5. Coat the florets in the flour mixture. After dipping a floret into the egg mixture, use the tongs to move it to the container with the flour mixture. Turn the floret in the flour until it's well covered. Set the battered florets aside on a plate until you're ready to fry them.[5]

  6. Heat up the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Heat about of olive oil in a large skillet. Be sure to use enough to thinly coat the bottom of the skillet!

    • You'll know the oil is hot enough when it begins to shimmer.
  7. Add the florets to the skillet and fry the first side for 3 minutes. Put the florets down in the hot oil without crowding them. Place the florets flat-side down if there is a flat side. Fry the first side for about 3 minutes without moving the florets around.[6]

    • The undersides of the florets should be golden brown.
    • You can probably fit 8-10 florets into the skillet at a time without overcrowding.
  8. Flip the florets with tongs and fry until all sides are nicely browned. Some pieces won't have 2 flat sides to fry. Cook oddly-shaped florets on at least 3 sides to make them as crispy as possible. Flip whenever the part of the floret touching the hot oil is golden-brown.[7]

    • If the oil starts to look low after the initial batch, add a little more to the skillet and let it heat it up again before continuing.
  9. Remove fried florets from the skillet onto a paper towel to drain. After one batch is fried, use the tongs to transfer the cauliflower pieces to a paper towel while you fry the next batch. The paper towel will soak up any excess oil.[8]

  10. Serve the fried cauliflower warm. Try dipping the florets into sour cream or Greek yoghurt sauce.[9] Garnish with fresh chopped parsley if you want.
Make Fried Cauliflower Step 10 Version 4.jpg
    • You can refrigerate leftover cauliflower for 3-5 days in an airtight container. Make sure you refrigerate any leftovers within 2 hours of cooking.[10]
    • Fried cauliflower tastes best fresh and hot. Reheat any leftovers in an oven at for about 10 minutes. Avoid microwaving the cauliflower, or it will become mushy.

[Edit]Deep-Fried Cauliflower

  1. Chop up your head of cauliflower. Use a knife to cut it into rough, small florets. Try to keep them all about the same size so that they deep-fry evenly. You don't need to boil the cauliflower first, though you can if you prefer it to be more tender.[11]

  2. Prepare the batter. Combine of flour, of baking powder, of cornstarch, and of salt in a large bowl. Add of water and of hot sauce. Mix all the ingredients into a smooth batter. In a separate bowl, put out of breadcrumbs.

    • Leave out the hot sauce if you want your dish to be less spicy.[12]
  3. Dip the cauliflower florets into the batter. Use tongs to lower each piece into the mixture and turn to coat it evenly. Lift out the floret and hold it over the bowl with the tongs, allowing the excess batter to drip back into the bowl.[13]

  4. Roll the cauliflower florets in the breadcrumbs. Use the tongs to place the batter-covered florets into the bowl of breadcrumbs. Roll and turn the cauliflower pieces to make sure that they're thoroughly coated in breadcrumbs.[14]

    • Once you've battered the florets, you can set them aside on a plate.
  5. Pour in the oil and heat the deep fryer. You can use safflower, vegetable, or peanut oil for this with great results. Wait until the deep fryer reaches before proceeding.[15]

    • If you don't have a deep fryer, fill a skillet with of oil and heat it on the stove.
  6. Deep fry the florets for 4-6 minutes until they're golden brown. Use tongs to lower the florets into the deep fryer in batches. Don't overcrowd the basket. Keep checking the batter for a golden brown color for the best indication of doneness.[16]

    • Once the florets are in the oil, you don't need to move them around or do anything else to coax them along.
  7. Remove the florets with tongs and drain them on paper towels. Line a plate with a few layers of paper towels. Transfer the fried florets to the plate and let the paper towels absorb any excess oil.[17]

    • Keep the paper towel on a plate rather than the counter for easier clean-up.
  8. Serve the cauliflower warm. Fried cauliflower tastes best when it's freshly cooked, so serve it while it's still hot. You can taste it first and season it with more salt, if you want to. Try garnishing with fresh parsley for a nicer presentation![18]
    Make Fried Cauliflower Step 18.jpg
    • Refrigerate any leftovers for 3-5 days in an airtight container, or tightly wrapped in aluminum foil or plastic wrap.[19]

How to Make a Paper Butterfly

Posted: 02 Jun 2022 05:00 PM PDT

Paper butterflies are not only dainty and chic, they're also fun to make. Try your hand at origami to create one or, if you're more of a crafting beginner, fold a simpler version with pretty pleats. When you're finished, use your butterflies as decor or give them to friends and family as gifts.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Folding an Origami Butterfly

  1. Fold the paper in half, then open it and fold it in half the other way. Make sure to crease both of the folds. Line up the edges when you're folding to ensure the crease is directly in the center.[1]

    • If your paper is the same color or pattern on both sides, it doesn't matter which side you start on. However, if one side is white, or the "backside," begin with that side facing up.
  2. Fold the paper in half diagonally, open it, and fold on the other diagonal. Bring 2 opposite corners together to create the folds. Press down firmly to create defined creases. Repeat on both diagonals. Open the paper to lie flat after you fold it.[2]

    • Your 4 folds should intersect in the exact center of the paper.
  3. Bring the right and left creases together, creating a triangle. With the paper laying flat in front of you, press the right horizontal crease to the left one. As you do this, the paper should collapse onto itself in a triangle shape along the diagonal creases you made.[3]

    • Press down on the triangle to crease the paper once it's collapsed.
    • If the paper isn't folding properly, go back over your original creases again. If they aren't defined enough, the paper will have trouble falling into the shape.
  4. Fold the 2 top corners into the center. When you created the triangle shape, it made 2 layers. Grab the corners on the top layer and line up their edges with the crease in the middle of the triangle.[4]

    • Try to align the corners with the crease perfectly so they aren't overlapping or so there isn't a large gap between the edges in the center.
  5. Flip the triangle over and fold the bottom up, leaving a small tip showing. You aren't folding it completely half. Instead you're folding it about 1/3 up from the base of the triangle. Hold the fold in place gently with your hand.[5]

    • Don't crease the fold.
  6. Bend the top layer of the tip over the base. There are 2 layers at the tip of the triangle. Peel the top 1 forward, folding it over the wide triangle bottom you're currently holding in place. The tip will be the head of the butterfly.[6]

    • Crease the fold that you make with the tip. This will help secure the body of the butterfly in place and prevent it from unraveling.
  7. Pull down the pieces from the bottom layer to create the lower wings. With the top layer folded over, bring the bottom layer of the tip in the opposite direction. The points of the 2 triangular pieces should be facing down, away from the folded head.[7]

    • It may help to hold the folded tip with your thumb while you pull the other pieces down so that the butterfly doesn't come apart.
    • Re-crease the folded tip after you arrange the bottom pieces if necessary.
    • Trim the edges of the wings if you want a smaller butterfly.

[Edit]Making a Pleated Paper Butterfly

  1. Fold the square piece of paper in half, creasing it. Line up the edges of the paper when you fold it to make sure you're creating a line directly down the middle. Press firmly with your fingernail to form the crease.[8]

    • Use any type of paper you'd like, whether it's origami paper, colorful cardstock, or even pretty gift wrap.
    • The size of your paper doesn't matter, as long as it's square. If you have a rectangular piece, simply trim it down so all of the edges are the same length.
  2. Unfold the paper and cut along the crease line. Use your scissors to cut the piece of paper in half. The groove of the crease should help guide your scissors in a straight line through the paper.[9]

    • Make sure your scissors are sharp so they don't tear or crinkle the paper.
    • If you have trouble cutting in a line, hold your scissors against a straight edge, like a ruler, while you cut.
  3. Make accordion folds with one of the pieces of the paper. Fold a small piece lengthwise, then flip the paper over to fold it back onto itself. Continue flipping the paper from side to side as you fold along the entire length of the paper. Think of this motion as similar to making a pleat or a fan.[10]

    • You can make the folds as thick or as thin as you'd like.
    • Keep the folds all the same thickness, no matter what size you choose.
  4. Take the other piece of paper you cut and fold it in half lengthwise. Place the 2 longer edges on top of each other. Then create a crease by pressing down along the fold.[11]

    • Try to make the crease as straight and even as possible so it splits the paper directly in half.
  5. Open it up and fold the 4 corners in toward the center crease line. Line up the edges straight along the crease. Your paper will now be in the shape of a hexagon, with 2 pointed ends formed by the folded corners.[12]

    • Leave the corners folded. If they won't stay in place, use a piece of double-sided tape or a little bit of glue under the flap.
  6. Flip the paper over and make accordion folds on each side of the crease. Fold one half the paper in towards the center. Then repeat on the other side. This will be the top half of the butterfly's wings.[13]

    • Make the folds as large or as small as you'd like, depending on the size of your paper.
  7. Bend both pieces of pleated paper in half. Press the pleats together and hold the paper between your thumb and forefinger. Carefully fold one end onto the other, creasing it firmly.[14]

    • The paper won't stay folded, but that's okay. You just want to make a crease, so the paper is in a V-shape.
  8. Place 1 piece above the other and tie them together at the center. Arrange the 2 pieces so that they form a butterfly shape. Pinch them together while you tie string or cord around both pieces.[15]

    • To secure the 2 pieces together better, you can add a dab of craft glue or hot glue in the middle.
    • Having a friend hold the pieces together while you tie the string makes it easier to get a tight knot.
    • You can also use ribbon or a pipe cleaner instead of string.
  9. Pull out the pleats to open up the wings. Scrunched-up folds don't exactly resemble a beautiful butterfly. Gently pull the pleats apart so that the 2 pieces of paper look like 1 large wing on each side instead of 2 disjointed ones.[16]

    • Be careful not to rip the paper when you're arranging the pleats.

How to Hang a Skateboard on a Wall

Posted: 02 Jun 2022 09:00 AM PDT

Skateboards can be fun to ride but they can also be used as unique wall decoration. Whether you want to hang up a retired skateboard or one that you use regularly, there are ways that you can do so attractively, creatively, and conveniently.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Hanging a Skateboard Deck with Fishing Line

  1. Remove your skateboard's trucks. Turn your skateboard on its side. Use a pair of pliers to hold 1 of the bolts on 1 of your trucks in place. Insert the tip of a screwdriver into the corresponding screw on the top side of the board. Twist the screwdriver until the screw is completely out. Repeat this 3 more times to remove 1 truck, and then remove the other truck using the same method.[1]
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 1 Version 2.jpg
  2. Feed a piece of fishing line through the holes in your deck. Locate the 2 screw holes closest to 1 end of the skateboard deck. Then, cut off or so of fishing line with a pair of scissors. Hold the deck with the underside facing you and feed 1 end of the fishing line through 1 hole. Then, feed it back towards you through the other hole.[2]
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    • The screw holes in your deck are there because they previously allowed screws to hold the deck and trucks together.
  3. Tie a knot with the ends of the fishing line. Fishing line can be slippery, so make sure to tie a knot that will hold, such as a granny knot. Don't tie it too close to the holes in the deck, but instead provide a little slack between the knot and the deck to make hanging it easier.[3]
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 3 Version 2.jpg
  4. Hammer a nail into the wall and hook the fishing line on it. Hold a nail against a point on your wall where you'd like the top of the deck to be located. Then, use a hammer to carefully hammer the nail into the wall.[4] Stop once the head of the nail is almost, but not quite, flush against the wall. Hang the fishing line on the nail between the nail head and the wall.
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • If you're hanging multiple skateboard decks, you may want to use measuring tape and a pencil to find out where on the wall the boards should be hung in order to be evenly spaced out.
  5. Hang the fishing line from wall hooks to avoid making holes. Instead of hammering a nail into the wall after you've tied a knot in the fishing line, use a pencil to draw a horizontal line on the wall that's level with the floor where you'd like your skateboard to be hung. Press a command hook, or something similar, onto the center of the line. Then, hang your fishing line on the hook.[5]
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • If you can't make holes in your walls, this may be a great alternative.

[Edit]Using Wall Mounts to Display Skateboard Decks

  1. Drill a hole in the wall and insert a wall anchor. Use a drill to drill a hole in the wall where you'd like your deck to be hung. Then, insert a plastic wall anchor into the hole to ensure that it effectively holds the weight of the deck.[6]
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 6 Version 2.jpg
  2. Secure your deck display to the wall with a screw. Your deck display should come with a screw. Hold the display against the wall and line up the hole at the center with the hole you drilled in the wall. Use a drill or screwdriver to screw the screw into the wall through the hole in the display.[7]
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 7 Version 2.jpg
  3. Twist the bolts towards the wall and slide your board onto the display. Once the display is secured to the wall, twist the 2 bolts that came with the display on each of the posts sticking out from the display. Then, align the 2 screw holes nearest to the end of your deck with the posts and slide it on.[8]
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 8 Version 2.jpg
  4. Twist the T nuts onto the display. Twist the 2 T nuts that came with the display onto either post until they're snug against the deck. This should securely hold the deck in place and keep any part of it from touching the wall.[9]
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 9 Version 2.jpg

[Edit]Using a Rope to Store a Skateboard on a Wall

  1. Cut a piece of thick rope. Get a strong, durable rope that won't break over time under the weight of your skateboard. Opt for a rope that's at least in diameter for best results. Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure about and use a sharp knife to cut the rope at this point.[10]
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 10 Version 2.jpg
  2. Tie a knot on each end of the rope and burn them. Tie a simple knot each end of your piece of rope and pull the ends tight. Carefully hold a lighter just under 1 end for a couple of seconds to burn it, and then repeat this process of the other end. This should help to keep the ends of the rope from fraying.[11]
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 11 Version 2.jpg
  3. Mark where you want to hang the skateboard on your wall. Use a pencil and a ruler to mark 2 horizontal lines on your wall. These lines should be equal in height but about apart.[12]
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 12 Version 2.jpg
  4. Push screws through the knots and screw them into the wall. Push a screw through the center of 1 of the knots and screw it into 1 of your marked spots with a screwdriver. Repeat this on the other side. Then, you can hang up your board vertically on the rope by 1 of its trucks.[13]
Hang a Skateboard on a Wall Step 13 Version 2.jpg

[Edit]Warnings

  • You may hurt yourself if you aren't familiar with working with tools. Be careful, and make sure to ask for someone's help if you need to.
  • Take safety precautions when handling fire to prevent injuries and other fire-related accidents.

How to Freeze Apples

Posted: 02 Jun 2022 01:00 AM PDT

If you want to freeze your apples to use later on, there's a super easy way to store them. Apples are generally peeled, sliced, and cored before being frozen, and they should be preserved using either lemon juice, salt water, or fruit preserver. By placing your apples in a freezer-safe container, your slices will stay tasty for up to a year.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Peeling and Slicing the Apples

  1. Wash the apples under clean running water. Turn on the faucet and place the apple underneath, using your fingers to scrub the apple gently to remove any surface dirt. Once the apple is clean, dry it off with a paper towel or clean cloth.

    • Remove any produce stickers from the apple as well.
  2. Peel the apples using a vegetable peeler. Be careful when using the peeler and go slowly, starting at the stem and working your way around the apple in a circle. Remove all of the skin so that the apple is ready to be sliced. Repeat this process for however many apples you're using.[1]

    • If you don't have a vegetable peeler, you can use a paring knife.
  3. Remove the core with a sharp cutting knife. Cut the apples in fourths with the cuts going lengthwise at the stem. Use the knife to carefully cut out the core of each slice so that there aren't any seeds left.[2]

    • Core the apples on a cutting board to make the process easier.
  4. Slice the apple sections into smaller pieces perfect for freezing. How many slices you have depends on personal preference, but cutting the apple into 8-12 slices is a good size. You can slice them using an apple slicer (which also removes the core), or you can use a knife and cut the apple into slices yourself.[3]

    • Place the apple sections on a cutting board when you're slicing them.
    • Cut the apple into thin slices perfect for an apple pie, or cut them into square chunks to put in smoothies.

[Edit]Preserving the Apples

  1. Preserve the apples as soon as you peel and slice them. This prevents the apples from browning too quickly. Choose which way you want to preserve the apples, whether it's using lemon juice, soaking them in salt water, or using a fruit preserver.

  2. Use lemon juice to keep the apple slices from browning. Combine of water with of lemon juice in a bowl, stirring it thoroughly with a spoon. Put the apple slices in the bowl and let them sit in the lemon juice and water for 5 minutes.[4]

    • Make sure all of the slices are submerged in the lemon juice mixture at some point.
    • Soaking the apples in the lemon juice and water mixture shouldn't alter the taste very much.
    • The ascorbic acid is what helps the lemon juice prevent browning.
  3. Soak the apples in salt water to keep the apples fresh. Pour of room temperature or warm water into a bowl along with of salt (table salt is fine). Stir the mixture until the salt dissolves, and then add the apple slices. Let the apples sit in the salt water for a few minutes before taking them out.

    • Make sure to evenly coat each slice with the salt water to ensure they stay fresh.
    • The salt acts as a preservative, prolonging the amount of time you can store the apple slices without them going bad or getting freezer burn.
    • Once the apples are thawed, they may have a slightly salty taste. Rinsing the apples under clean running water may help with the salty flavor.
  4. Sprinkle the slices with a fruit preserver to ensure they store well. Purchase a fruit preserver from a grocery store and follow the directions on the container to cover the apples. These most often come in a powder form, so apply the fruit preserver in an even coat making sure to cover both sides of every slice.[5]
Freeze Apples Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    • Fruit preservers should not alter the taste of the apples.

[Edit]Freezing the Apple Slices

  1. Drain the apple slices in a colander if you soaked them. If the apple slices were put in a liquid to sit for a few minutes, pour the bowl of apples into a colander to drain out the liquid. Shake the colander lightly to ensure all of the liquid gets strained.[6]

    • Don't rinse the slices after they've been treated, as you don't want to remove the lemon juice, salt water, or fruit preserver.
  2. Spread the slices out on a baking sheet. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the slices from sticking to the pan. Place each apple slice on the parchment paper so that they're lying flat and are evenly spaced out.[7]

    • It's important that the apple slices aren't touching each other on the baking sheet, or they'll stick together when frozen.
  3. Put the baking sheet in the freezer for 1-3 hours. Make sure the baking tray is put into the freezer lying flat so that the apple slices don't slide off. Leave the slices in the freezer for a little over an hour if the slices are super thin, or for about 3 hours for thicker slices.[8]

    • Freezing the slices separately helps prevent them from sticking together when you put them in a bag in the freezer.
  4. Remove the apples from the tray and put them in a sealed container. Once the slices are frozen individually, place them in a freezer-safe plastic bag or in a hard plastic container. Make sure you remove as much air as possible from the plastic bag or container to help prevent freezer burn.[9]

    • Write the date on the container before putting it in the freezer, as well as something like "Apple slices" so you remember what the food is.
    • Remove the apple slices from the parchment paper using your fingers or a spatula.
  5. Store the apple slices in a freezer for up to a year. With your apple slices sealed off in a freezer-safe container, they should last several months to a year. Try to use the apple slices before freezer burn starts to form for the best taste.[10]

    • To defrost the apples, place the sealed container in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours, or put them in a bowl of water for 1 hour or less.
    • If you're only planning on using a portion of the apples, remove only that portion from the freezer so you're not thawing and refreezing them.

[Edit]Video

[Edit]Tips

  • Avoid freezing apples with lots of bruises or rotten sections in them.
  • The texture and taste of an apple will change when you freeze it, but some varieties hold up better than others. Sweet apples, like Fuji and Gala varieties, maintain their taste better than tart apples while pie apples, like Golden Delicious and Granny Smith, maintain their texture better than mealy apples, like the Red Delicious.
  • Frozen apples are perfect for making things like smoothies, apple pie, or muffins.

How to Fold a Shirt for Travel

Posted: 01 Jun 2022 05:00 PM PDT

There are many ways to fold a shirt, and when you are traveling, you may want to reduce wrinkles or save space. Try folding your shirts together to reduce wrinkles or rolling up your shirts to save space. You'll be ready for your vacation or business trip in no time!

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Folding Your Dress Shirts

  1. Find a flat surface and lay out your dress shirt. Use a surface like a table, chair seat, or bed. Smooth out the back of your shirt, so there are no wrinkles.[1]
Fold a Shirt for Travel Step 1 Version 4.jpg
  2. Button up your shirt. You can button all of the buttons, or just do the top, bottom, and center button. Either choice will keep your shirts straight and cut down on wrinkles as you pack.[2]

  3. Grasp one of your sleeves and fold it towards the center of your shirt. Make sure your shirt is face down before you make this fold. Your fold line will be just before your shirt's collar, starting at the center of the shoulder. Your shirt should have about ⅓ of the front folded over top of the back.[3]

    • You can start with either the left or right sleeve.
  4. Fold your other sleeve towards the center, just like the first one. Mirror your movements for the first sleeve. Fold the other sleeve towards the center so your fold is made near the shoulder.[4]

  5. Fold your sleeve forward, creating another fold. After your sleeve is positioned on the back of your shirt, pinch the top and the bottom of your sleeve. Fold your sleeve on top of the rest of your sleeve. Make this fold at an angle, forming a broad "V" shape with your fold.[5]

    • Your sleeve's folds should meet right around the shirt's collar, laying flat at the seam.
    • Do this for both the left and right sleeves.
  6. Hold the tail of your shirt with 2 hands and fold the shirt lengthwise. You can make 1 or 2 folds, based on the length of your shirt. For shorter shirts, make your fold from the bottom up, so the bottom edge rests below the collar. For longer shirts, make 2 folds from the bottom, so your folds are stacked on top of each other.[6]

  7. Flip over your folded shirt so it faces the front, and store in your bag. Repeat this for all of your dress shirts, and you'll be ready to travel.[7]

[Edit]Avoiding Wrinkles By Folding Shirts Together

  1. Lay one of your shirts flat, with the back facing you. Use a flat surface, like a table. If you are using a dress shirt with buttons, you should button them up.[8]
Fold a Shirt for Travel Step 8 Version 4.jpg
    • You can use both dress and T-shirts.
  2. Place your finger at the neckline of your shirt and fold your sleeves. This will form a straight line down the edge of your shirt. You can do this for either short-sleeved or long-sleeved shirts.[9]

  3. Move the left sleeve to the fold line you created. This will fold your sleeve on top of the back of your shirt.[10]

    • If you are folding a short-sleeved shirt, your sleeve will fold onto the top third of your shirt.
    • For longer sleeves, your sleeves will line the length of your shirt.
  4. Fold in your right sleeve like you folded the left, so it lays flat. Now both of your sleeves should be lying flat on top of the back of your shirt.[11]

    • You can smooth out the surface of your shirt, so the shirt is perfectly flat and wrinkle-free.
  5. Place your second folded shirt on top of your first shirt. Place your shirt towards the bottom of your first shirt, though leave a 3-5 inches at the tail of your shirt.[12]

    • Make sure you fold your second shirt before you fold it into the first shirt.
  6. Sandwich your second shirt in between both halves of your first shirt. Fold your first shirt around your second shirt. Your second shirt should now be in between the top and bottom half of your first shirt.[13]

  7. Flip your shirts over so they face the front. Now you can pack your shirts into your suitcase. This technique cuts down on wrinkles, so you won't have to worry about an iron while traveling.[14]
Fold a Shirt for Travel Step 14 Version 4.jpg
    • It is helpful to still hang up or lay out your clothes after you reach your destination. Folding your shirts with this method will prevent wrinkles, but they can still form from the few folds you do make.

[Edit]Saving Space by Rolling Your Clothes

  1. Lay your shirt flat and face up. You want a flat surface so you can make tight, neat rolls.[15]
Fold a Shirt for Travel Step 15 Version 4.jpg
  2. Take the bottom of your shirt and fold it about up. This will create a "pocket" which you will tuck the body of your shirt into.[16]

    • You can also roll your shirts without creating a fold from the bottom.
  3. Fold your shirt into thirds. Pinch your sleeve and shirt bottom, and fold it into the center. Do this for both the left and the right sleeve, dividing your shirt into thirds.[17]

    • You can start with either the left or right sleeve, whichever you prefer.
  4. Fold your sleeves over the center of your shirt. This will tuck in your sleeves, and your shirt will look like one, thin rectangle.[18]

    • Try to make these folds as flat and secure as possible, to help you roll up the shirt.
  5. Roll up your shirt neatly and tightly, starting at the collar. Hold the sides of your rectangle, fold the edge on top of the shirt, and roll the body of your shirt over top. Leave minimal space in between your rolls to keep them tight.[19]

    • It is okay if you have to roll your shirt over again to make sure it is neat. You want your shirts to roll up into a small, compact bundle.
  6. Tuck the edge of your rolled shirt into your bottom fold. Roll your shirt up to the bottom, and place the bottom fold over top of your rolled up shirt, tucking it in. This will keep your shirt from unrolling as you pack.[20]

    • You can also roll up your shirts without tucking them into the bottom of your shirt. The tuck helps keep the shirt securely rolled, but it is optional.
  7. Place all of your rolled shirts at the bottom of your suitcase. This will create an even, level base. Pack the rest of your clothes over top your rolled shirts.
Fold a Shirt for Travel Step 21 Version 2.jpg
    • You can also roll up your other clothing, like your pants and sweaters.

[Edit]Video

[Edit]Tips

  • Try using the permanent press cycle when drying your clothes to avoid wrinkles.
  • Starch and iron your shirts before you fold, to keep your shirts from wrinkling after you fold them.

How to Clean a Laptop

Posted: 01 Jun 2022 09:00 AM PDT

All computers get dirty over time. However, laptops tend to need cleaning more often because of how they are handled. Particularly if you frequently travel with your laptop, you probably want to clean it at least once a month. A buildup of dirt and grime, particularly on the screen and the keys, can impair your laptop's functioning. Always make sure you shut down your laptop and disconnect it from any power source before you start cleaning it. If possible, you should also remove the battery.[1]

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Wiping the Screen

  1. Clear surface dust with a microfiber cloth. Fold the cloth and rub it gently across the full width of your screen, back and forth. You may want to brace the screen with your other hand so it doesn't move while you're cleaning it.[2]
    Clean a Laptop Step 1 Version 4.jpg
    • Don't press hard into the screen or try to scratch off stubborn spots – you could damage your screen. Use only the lightest pressure to wipe off surface dust.
  2. Use a damp sponge for dirt and grime. Wet a clean sponge, then squeeze it out until it is almost dry. Use purified or distilled water rather than tap water, which can leave mineral streaks on your screen. Wipe your screen gently, using light pressure – do not scrub.[3]
    Clean a Laptop Step 2 Version 4.jpg
    • You can also use a pre-moistened cleaning wipe. Just make sure it doesn't contain harsh cleansing agents such as ammonia or bleach, which may damage your screen.
    • Water can drip into your laptop and damage internal components, so make extra sure you've squeezed all excess liquid out.
    • For particularly stubborn spots, add just a drop of gentle dish soap to the water. If you have a touchscreen, consult your owner's manual or the manufacturer's website to determine what cleaning agents are safe for the finish.
  3. Invest in a screen-cleaning kit for dirtier screens. You can buy screen-cleaning kits online or at any store that sells electronics. These kits include a cleaner specially designed for laptop screens and usually come with their own microfiber cloth. If you have a touchscreen, check to make sure the kit is listed as safe for touchscreens.[4]
    Clean a Laptop Step 3 Version 4.jpg
    • Do not use regular glass cleaners, particularly those that contain ammonia, on any laptop screen. They can damage the screen.
  4. Polish in a circular motion to remove streaks. After you're done cleaning, take your microfiber cloth and gently rub your screen in a circular motion. This will eliminate any streaks or particles the sponge left behind.[5]
    Clean a Laptop Step 4 Version 4.jpg
    • Start at a top corner and proceed in tight circles across the top of your screen, then back and forth until you get to the bottom.

[Edit]Cleaning the Keyboard

  1. Shake the loose dust out of your keyboard. Get a good grip on the sides of your laptop and turn it upside down with the screen open. Shake the machine gently to dislodge crumbs and larger particles. You may also want to tilt it to one side, then another, to free debris stuck under keys.[6]
    Clean a Laptop Step 5 Version 4.jpg
    • If you haven't cleaned your laptop in a while, or if you regularly eat while using your laptop, shake it over a trashcan to avoid making more of a mess.
    • If you've already cleaned your screen, you may want to give it another wipe-down with your microfiber cloth after you do this. Dust from the keyboard may end up on the screen.
  2. Vacuum loose dust and hair from the keyboard. If you have a small handheld vacuum, use the smallest attachment to vacuum the debris from your keyboard without harming your laptop. Move the attachment slowly across the keyboard, going over each row from the top of the keyboard to the bottom.[7]
    Clean a Laptop Step 6 Version 4.jpg
    • You can also use a can of compressed air. However, if you do, tilt your keyboard at an angle so that you're forcing the dust out of your keyboard. If you blow the compressed air directly into the keyboard, you'll just blow the dust and debris further inside. This is especially true for MacBook keyboards, which are open to the inside of the machine.[8]
  3. Use a pencil eraser to remove grime from the keycaps. If you look at the keys from an angle, you will be able to see where grime has built up on the keycaps from your fingers. Take your pencil eraser and gently rub to get rid of this build-up.[9]
    Clean a Laptop Step 7 Version 4.jpg
    • After you use the pencil eraser, you may want to run the vacuum over the keys again, just to get rid of the stubble the eraser left behind.
  4. Get between keys with a cotton swab. You may find that grime has built up between the keys as well. A cotton swab is small enough to clean these areas. If your keyboard is particularly grimy, dip the cotton swab in rubbing alcohol.[10]
    Clean a Laptop Step 8 Version 4.jpg
    • Take care not to get the cotton swab too wet. Don't press down too hard when you clean – you don't want the alcohol dripping underneath the keys into your machine.
    • A cotton swab dipped in alcohol also works for cleaning the tops of the keys, particularly if you have sticky grime that the eraser couldn't get.
  5. Wipe down the keys with a slightly damp cloth. Use a microfiber cloth dampened with distilled water, or with a disinfecting mixture of equal parts water and rubbing alcohol. Thoroughly squeeze out all excess liquid before using the cloth on your keyboard. Rub lightly over the tops of the keys – do not press them in.[11]
    Clean a Laptop Step 9 Version 4.jpg
    • After you've used a slightly damp cloth, wipe the keys again with a completely dry cloth to remove all moisture.
  6. Remove keys only if you know how to put them back on. Taking off the keycaps may be the only way to remove all grime captured beneath the keys. This is likely true if you've never cleaned your laptop, or if you frequently eat while using your laptop. However, keycaps can be tricky to remove and replace, depending on the design of your machine.[12]
    Clean a Laptop Step 10 Version 4.jpg
    • You may want to take a picture of your keyboard before you take the keys off, just so you have a reference for where to put them back on. Once all the keys are off, you may forget the order, especially for function keys.

[Edit]Shining the Case

  1. Mix a gentle cleansing solution. Use purified or distilled water and a few drops of gentle dish soap. You can also use a mix of equal parts rubbing alcohol and purified or distilled water. Do not use regular household cleaners for your case, or any harsh chemicals such as bleach or ammonia.[13]
    Clean a Laptop Step 11 Version 4.jpg
    • If you use rubbing alcohol, take care not to get any on your laptop's screen. It can damage the anti-glare and scratch-resistant coatings on the screen.
  2. Dip a sponge into your cleansing solution. Take a clean sponge and soak it in the cleansing solution, then wring it out until it is nearly completely dry. Make sure it no longer drips, even when you squeeze it. Rub the sponge gently over the outside surface of your laptop.[14]
    Clean a Laptop Step 12 Version 3.jpg
    • You can use the same sponge and cleansing solution to clean your laptop's touchpad.
    • Don't clean inside ports or vents with the sponge – you risk getting moisture inside your laptop and damaging its components.
  3. Use cotton swabs to clean the gunk out of crevices. If your laptop case has seams and crevices, they may collect dirt and grime. A cotton swab dipped in your cleansing solution can get into these small areas.[15]
    Clean a Laptop Step 13 Version 3.jpg
    • As with the sponge, make sure the cotton swab is not too wet. Use light pressure to avoid squeezing moisture into the machine.
  4. Dig out grime with a toothpick if necessary. If narrow crevices, ports, or vents are clogged up with dirt, use a toothpick to gently scrape the case and pull the grime out. Move the toothpick in an outward sweeping motion to avoid shoving grime further up into your machine.[16]
    Clean a Laptop Step 14 Version 3.jpg
    • Be gentle with the toothpick to avoid scratching the surface of your case. Hold it at an angle, like you would hold a pencil, rather than bearing down with the point.
  5. Blow debris from ports with compressed air. Angle a can of compressed air so that it is blowing into and out of the port or vent you want to clear. Turn your laptop and blow from multiple angles to make sure you've cleaned thoroughly.[17]
    Clean a Laptop Step 15 Version 3.jpg
    • Never blow the compressed air directly into the port or vent. This will loosen the debris and send it deep inside your machine, where it could damage components.
  6. Use rubbing alcohol for sticky residue. If you have particularly sticky or grimy spots on your case that can't be removed with gentle cleaning, use a cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol directly on the spot.[18] Make sure the cotton ball isn't too wet – you don't want rubbing alcohol running into your machine.[19]
    Clean a Laptop Step 16 Version 3.jpg
    • Use moderate pressure, rubbing repeatedly until the spot is gone.
    • If you previously had stickers on your laptop case, you may have more luck with an oil-based cleansing product, such as Goo Gone.
  7. Polish the surface with a microfiber cloth. Once your case is clean, take your microfiber cloth and wipe the entire case, using a circular motion. This will remove any moisture as well as any streaks your cleaning may have left on the finish of your case.[20]
    Clean a Laptop Step 17 Version 3.jpg
    • Once your laptop case is clean, you may notice spots of grime that you didn't see before. Use a cotton swab or cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol to finish these last spots.

[Edit]Video

[Edit]Tips

  • Use a hand sanitizer before touching your laptop to decrease the dirt and grime on the keyboard.[21]

[Edit]Warnings

  • Never spray cleaners directly onto any part of your computer. Spray a cloth or sponge first, then use that to gently clean your computer.[22]
  • Moisture and electronics do not mix. After cleaning your laptop, make sure every part of it is completely dry before plugging it into a power source or turning it on.[23]

How to Grow Coneflowers

Posted: 01 Jun 2022 01:00 AM PDT

Colorful, striking, and extremely hardy, coneflowers (Echinacea) are the perfect summer perennial for your garden. They're easy to care for regardless of your experience level and attract helpful pollinators like bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. If you're wondering how to grow this vibrant wildflower in your garden, you've come to the right place! Our complete guide will show you everything you need to know about coneflower planting, growth, and care.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Creating the Right Conditions for Coneflowers

  1. Plant your coneflowers in the spring.[1] It's safe to plant coneflowers once the danger of frost has fully passed, but they can be cultivated throughout the rest of spring and early summer as well.[2] Coneflowers enjoy a long flowering season, typically blooming from mid-summer into the fall.
    Grow Coneflowers Step 1.jpg
    • Seeds can be started inside the house 6 to 8 weeks before the last spring frost or outside once the soil has warmed to around (usually in the spring).[3]
    • If you're dividing or transplanting existing coneflowers in your garden, do it in the spring or fall.
  2. Pick a spot that offers full sun. Coneflowers are happiest when they have access to direct sunlight for 6 to 8 hours each day. Because they're heat resistant, you won't have to worry about them getting damaged or dried out in the sun. However, coneflowers can also tolerate light shade if necessary.[4]
    Grow Coneflowers Step 2.jpg
    • If they get too much shade, your coneflowers will be vulnerable to powdery mildew, and you'll notice they have droopy stems.
  3. Make sure the garden has well-drained soil and compost. Coneflowers do best with well-drained (not overly wet) soil rich in organic matter. Once you've picked an ideal spot, loosen the soil with a garden fork and mix in a to layer of compost so your coneflowers have plenty of nutrients.[5]
    Grow Coneflowers Step 3.jpg
    • To check your soil's drainage, dig a hole that's about wide and deep. Fill it with water and let it drain completely before filling the hole again. Monitor the water level this time: if your soil is well-drained, the water level will drop by every hour.
    • Coneflowers are hardy flowers that can flourish in a wide range of conditions, so it's okay if your soil isn't perfect. Plus, adding compost improves your soil's drainage.
  4. Select a type of coneflower to grow. Purple coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea) are the traditional purple blooms you probably picture when you think of coneflowers. However, hybridized versions of purpurea also come in vibrant red, orange, and pink shades. These large flowers can grow to be tall and wide.[6] Other varieties include:
Grow Coneflowers Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    • Yellow coneflowers (Echinacea paradoxa) are bright blooms that can be grown next to other types of coneflower or grown separately. They grow in multi-stemmed clumps that can be up to tall and wide.
    • Narrow-leaved coneflowers (Echinacea angustifolia) work well in small spots. This compact coneflower stays between - tall and wide. Its pink petals are paler than those of the purple coneflower.
  5. Place coneflowers next to other perennials. You can create a healthy and colorful garden by pairing coneflowers with plants that attract pollinators and have similar needs. Coneflowers are perennials, which are plants that grow back year after year, so other perennials are easy to grow in the same space.
Grow Coneflowers Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    • Meadow perennials like bee balm, black-eyed susans, lavender, asters, lupines, and larkspur are all great choices to pair with coneflowers.[7]

[Edit]Planting Coneflowers

  1. Space out the coneflowers to be to apart. Since full-grown coneflower plants will grow quite a bit—anywhere from to wide, and up to , it's important to give them space to grow. Make sure there's enough room in your garden for all of the coneflowers that you want to plant.[8]
Grow Coneflowers Step 6 Version 3.jpg
    • If space gets tight, consider growing a more compact variety like narrow-leaved coneflowers.
  2. Bury coneflower plants to the top of their roots and water them. Dig a hole big enough for the plant; if the coneflower came in a pot, the hole's width should be twice the pot's diameter. Then, place the plant in the hole, so its root ball is even with the soil surface. Fill in the rest of the soil. When you're done, water the coneflower generously to encourage deep roots.[9]
Grow Coneflowers Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    • Digging such a wide hole is helpful because it gives the coneflower's roots space to spread and grow.
    • Immediately after planting and watering the coneflowers, apply a thin layer of mulch and compost over the soil's surface to prevent weeds.
  3. Sow coneflower seeds as an alternative to buying small plants. Place seeds less than underground—as seeds, coneflowers don't need to be far below the soil's surface. However, seeds need plenty of space to grow, so plant them roughly apart from one other.
    Grow Coneflowers Step 4.jpg
    • Growing coneflowers as plants bought from a nursery is most common, but coneflower seeds are also easy to care for. You can buy them, or collect them from coneflower plants in bloom.
    • Remember that seeds collected from coneflower plants will take 2 years of growth before flowering.[10]
  4. Grow coneflowers inside with a to pot. That may seem big for a pot, but your coneflowers will need room to grow! First, spread crushed gravel across the bottom of the pot for drainage. Then, fill the pot about halfway full with potting soil. Place your coneflower inside the pot so that its roots are an inch below the pot's rim, and then fill it in with soil.[11]
Grow Coneflowers Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    • Once you're done planting, water the coneflower just like you would if it was in the ground.
    • Make sure that any pot you pick has drainage holes since coneflowers like to live in drier soil.
    • The container's material doesn't matter as much as its size. Coneflowers can handle heat, so even metal is fine.

[Edit]Caring for Coneflowers

  1. Give your coneflowers of water per week. You likely won't have to water the plants manually during weeks of rain. Keep up with weekly watering during dry spells, applying water directly to the base of the coneflower; top-down watering onto its leaves can cause fungal growth.[12]
    Grow Coneflowers Step 8.jpg
    • Because they're drought-resistant, coneflowers don't need to be constantly watered.[13] In fact, they may be damaged if their roots get too soaked.
    • Hybrid species of coneflowers may need more frequent watering to live healthy lives.
  2. Keep the soil free of weeds. Coneflowers don't compete well for nutrients in the soil, so make sure that weeds aren't growing around your flowers and stealing their food. Check your garden regularly throughout the spring and summer, pulling up weeds by their roots as they grow.[14]
Grow Coneflowers Step 11 Version 2.jpg
    • Apply a thin layer of mulch and compost each spring. This retains moisture and discourages weeds from growing in the area, which will make it easier for you to monitor your coneflowers in the summer.
  3. Spray coneflowers with neem oil to remove pests. Even though coneflowers' spiny stems protect them from deer and other large animals, insects like aphids can still cause problems. Lightly spread neem oil, which can be bought as a spray, onto the surface of your coneflowers. It's an effective and natural insecticide, so it won't hurt your garden.
    Grow Coneflowers Step 9.jpg
  4. Deadhead your coneflowers throughout summer and fall. "Deadheading" is snipping a flower that has already bloomed, so it doesn't devote energy to setting seeds—and instead, the plant produces more flowers. When you see flowers start to wither after blooming during the growing season, remove them from the plant.[15] This will prolong the amount of time your coneflower spends flowering as a whole![16]
    Grow Coneflowers Step 13.jpg
  5. Prune back coneflowers to the ground in late fall or early spring. Once the growing season is finished, either before or after winter, trim back your coneflowers all the way to the ground. Use trimmers to cut it at its base, just above the first leaf.[17] Regardless of when you prune them, your coneflowers will spring right back up when the next growing season comes around!

How to Turn Off Silent Mode on iPhone

Posted: 31 May 2022 05:00 PM PDT

Do you need to turn off Silent mode on your iPhone? There are two ways you can do this including using the physical buttons on your phone and creating an AssistiveTouch function. This wikiHow article teaches you how to turn off Silent mode on any iPhone, including iPhone X, 11, 12, and 13.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Using Physical Buttons

  1. Flip the switch so the orange isn't showing. You'll find this switch above your volume keys. As long as you don't see orange, Silent mode is off and your phone will ring like normal.[1]
Turn Off Silent Mode on iPhone Step 1.jpg
    • If you see the orange part of the switch, Silent mode is on and your phone won't ring.
  2. Change the behavior of Silent mode. Go to Settings > Sound & Haptics" or Settings > Sound to change if your phone vibrates while in Silent mode.[2]
Turn Off Silent Mode on iPhone Step 2.jpg
  3. Enable or disable "Change with Buttons" to change your ringtone and alert sound levels. If, for example, you don't have a ringtone selected, turning off Silent mode will not make your phone ring.
Turn Off Silent Mode on iPhone Step 3.jpg
    • You can also set ringtones, vibrations, and other sounds in Settings > Sounds & Haptics or Settings > Sounds.

[Edit]Using AssistiveTouch

  1. Open Settings. This app icon features gears on a light grey background.
Turn Off Silent Mode on iPhone Step 4.jpg
  2. Tap . You may need to scroll down the menu to see this option next to an icon of a person inside a circle.
Turn Off Silent Mode on iPhone Step 5.jpg
  3. Tap . It's under the "Physical And Motor" header next to an icon of a finger.
Turn Off Silent Mode on iPhone Step 6.jpg
  4. Tap and tap the switch to toggle it on . A green switch will indicate that the feature is enabled. When you turn on AssistiveTouch, a grey dot will appear on your screen that you will be able to tap for more options, like turning on or off Silent mode.
Turn Off Silent Mode on iPhone Step 7.jpg
    • Alternatively, you can say "Hey Siri, turn on AssistiveTouch" and skip a few steps that go through menus.
  5. Tap the grey dot on your screen. This will open up the AssistiveTouch menu.
Turn Off Silent Mode on iPhone Step 8.jpg
  6. Tap . It's the icon that looks like your iPhone.
Turn Off Silent Mode on iPhone Step 9.jpg
  7. Tap . This is next to a bell icon that either has a line through it or not, depending on if your phone is currently muted. You should see a "Silent Mode Off/On" notification at the top of your screen that confirms your choice in the AssistiveTouch menu.
Turn Off Silent Mode on iPhone Step 10.jpg
    • Since the AssistiveTouch menu option overrides the physical button, your phone can get confused if you use both. If you're in doubt, restart your phone.
    • If you're using at least iOS 14, you can set AssistiveTouch so you can tap the back of your phone to turn off Silent mode. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap to do so.
    • Older iPhones (those not running iOS 14) can instead enable a tap, a double-tap, or a long press on the AssistiveTouch icon to enable and disable Silent mode. To set this up, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch and select either "Single-tap", "Double-tap", or "Long Press." Finally, select Mute to indicate that the shortcut should silence your phone.

How to Get Started with Honkai Impact

Posted: 31 May 2022 09:00 AM PDT

Honkai Impact 3rd (崩坏3) is a role-playing game by miHoYo and an older game than Genshin Impact. A hack-and-slash game, Honkai Impact shares many of the same mechanics as other games of the genre, and some of the features from Honkai Impact have made it into Genshin Impact as well. While the games may be vastly different, the core mechanics are oddly similar. This wikiHow will show you how to get started with Honkai Impact.

[Edit]Steps

[Edit]Getting Started

  1. Download Honkai Impact. The game is available worldwide to all users. You can download this game on Windows, iOS, or Android. The game currently does not work on Mac or any console platform.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 1.jpg
    • The download process continues after launching the game, during which the latest update preview trailer will loop. This can be turned off and the game can be moved to the background to let the download quietly proceed.
  2. Create an account. You can log in with your email address, Apple, Google, Facebook, or Twitter. If you played any miHoYo game before, including Genshin Impact and Tears of Themis, you already have a miHoYo account. Enter your credentials into the login screen, or follow the prompts to create an account for the game.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 2.jpg
    • If you are seeing "Abnormal game environment" then you need to make sure Honkai Impact is running as an administrator or disable memory integrity.
  3. Tap the screen to start. After all the resources are downloaded and you are logged in, you can start. Chapter I Act I serves as a tutorial for the game's fundamental controls.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 3.jpg

[Edit]Basic Controls

  1. Use WASD or the joystick to move around. Like many games, you can use WASD on your keyboard or the digital joystick onscreen to move.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 4.jpg
  2. Use QENM or drag the screen to change the field of view. This will allow you to see behind you, ahead of you, and to the side of you.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 5.jpg
    • The game can be played using only a keyboard, in addition to touch and controller, making it a good game for laptops and other handheld devices.
  3. Press J (or tap the bottom right button) to attack. This will activate the current character's current weapon. Valkyries may deal Physical, Fire, Lightning, or Ice damage, depending on her damage type and her battlesuit.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 6.jpg
  4. Press K (or tap the bottom left button) to trigger evade skills. A successful evade will both nullify incoming damage on trigger and use the evade skill. This may range anything from skills that slow down time (referred to as time fracture) to skills that provide attack bonuses and heal characters.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 7.jpg
  5. Press U (or tap the top left button) to trigger a secondary skill. This will consume a set number of skill points (SP) to perform an attack. Secondary skills often deal physical damage, but some deal Fire, Ice, or Lightning damage. Certain enemies may be weaker to one of the four types of damage, making it more effective.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 8.jpg
  6. Press I (or tap the top right button) to trigger the Valkyrie's ultimate. This will consume a larger number of skill points (SP) to perform an attack. Ultimates deal far more damage than physical damage, but some may also trigger other passive effects like time fracture or time stop.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 9.jpg
  7. Press the number keys to switch your character. Note that you cannot switch characters while taking or dealing damage. You can also switch characters by tapping on the character to switch to.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 10.jpg
    • If a Valkyrie's icon is blinking, it means she has a QTE (quick time event) ready. Switching to her may increase the cooldown of switching back, but will perform some other passive effect like a follow-up attack.
  8. Press the escape key or the pause button to pause. This will bring up the pause menu. Not all gameplay is pauseable. The pause menu allows for adjustment of controls as well as viewing of currently active missions.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 11.jpg

[Edit]Other Important Information

  1. Note the bar on the bottom of the screen is your Valkyrie's health. This can be replenished by picking up health tokens. If that bar reaches zero, then that character dies. You can revive by spending crystals, although this is undesirable since crystals are also used for pulling on the gacha.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 12.jpg
    • Ways to lose health in a stage include debuffs (such as bleed, common in the Quantum Singularis (QS) challenges) that drain health and take damage.
    • Ways to gain health include picking up health tokens and Valkyrie skills that can heal the party.
    • If all your characters die, then you will be presented with the "Defeat" screen. You will have to restart the challenge over, or you will be removed from the open world and will have to wait for your characters to revive.
  2. Understand the different Valkyrie/enemy types. In the game, depending on the type of the Valkyrie and enemy, you may gain an attack boost or an attack reduction when casting certain skills.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 13.jpg
    • The three most common enemy types in much of the start of the game are Biologic (BIO), Mecha (MECH), and Psychic (PSY).
      • Attacks from BIO are strong against PSY but weak against MECH.
      • Attacks from PSY are strong against MECH but weak against BIO.
      • Attacks from MECH are strong against BIO but weak against PSY.
    • The other two enemy types are Quantum (QUA) and Imaginary (IMG).
      • Attacks from QUA are strong against QUA but weak against IMG.
      • Attacks from IMG are strong against IMG but weak against QUA.
    • Weak attacks gain a 30% attack reduction, and strong attacks gain a 30% attack boost. Neutral attacks have no reduction or boost in attack strength.
    • When making character parties, the maximum number of characters you can have is three, so you should try to include characters from BIO, PSY, and MECH to be ready to counter the most common types.
  3. Note the bar on the top of the screen is the selected enemy's health. This will also list status effects active on the enemy. The words "UP" or "DOWN" also show how effective your attacks against the enemy will be based on your Valkyrie's type.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 14.jpg
  4. Forget elemental reactions if coming from Genshin Impact. Honkai does not have any elemental reactions in the main storyline, but may have similar systems in other challenges. Elemental damage also cannot score critical hits in Honkai Impact in most cases. Spamming K or the spacebar to unfreeze also does not work, either.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 15.jpg
    • If an elemental gauge is filled up it will apply some status effect such as freezing a character/enemy or dealing damage over time.
  5. Know how to level up. Leveling up is the only way to unlock more content in the game. You can level up your captain level, your Valkyries, and your weapons.
Get Started with Honkai Impact Step 16.jpg
    • Captain level: Complete stages and daily tasks (listed on the "Dailies" section from the left menu on the home screen).
    • Valkyries/Battlesuits: Select the "Valkyria" button from the main screen. Select the character to level up, then select "Level up". The character's max level is the same as your captain level.
    • Weapons/Stigmata: Select the "Equipment" button then select the weapon or stigmata from your inventory. Click on the weapon, then "Enhance" to enhance the weapon or stigmata, and "Upgrade" to upgrade the weapon or stigmata after reaching the level cap.

[Edit]Tips

  • You can unlock additional battlesuits beyond "White Comet", "Crimson Impulse", and "Valkyrie Chariot" by using the "Supply" menu. Note that you may not always get what you want, and additional supply cards may require an in-app purchase to acquire.
    • Note that a lot of Valkyries appear more than once; this is because each instance is a different battlesuit.

How to Play Sudoku for Kids

Sudoku helps kids sharpen their math and critical thinking skills, so if you're looking to teach a child to solve these exciting puzzles, that's amazing! For beginners and kids as young as 5 years old, 4x4 puzzles can be a great way to make Sudoku more accessible. Plus, when your little one is ready for more of a challenge, the same principles apply to the 6x6 and 9x9 Sudoku puzzles. For all the very best tips on how to teach a kid to play Sudoku, read on.

[Edit]4x4 Sudoku Basic Rules

  1. Solve 4x4 Sudoku puzzles using only the numbers 1-4. In a 4x4 Sudoku puzzle, answer every square with a whole number between 1 and 4. Examine the "clues" (or, the numbers provided by the puzzle). The clues will also always be a whole number between 1 and 4.[1]

    • For the 9x9 Sudoku puzzle, answers will be any number between 1 and 9.
  2. Use each number just once in a single row. To solve a 4x4 puzzle, arrange the numbers so no number repeats itself in the same row. At the same time, ensure that every number is used at least once in each row.[2]

    • So for example, a row filled in with the sequence (1, 3, 1, 4) is incorrect—because it excludes 2 and repeats 1.
    • The sequence (1, 3, 2, 4), though, works for a single row.
  3. Use each number once in a single column. Arrange numbers 1-4 in a single column to solve a 4x4 Sudoku puzzle. Ensure that in each column, every number is featured once. Double-check that no numbers repeat themselves in the same column.[3]

    • So, a possible row (4, 3, 1, 2) could intersect with a possible column (1, 3, 2, 4).
  4. Use each number just once in a single square. In addition to rows and columns, there are also four boxes with four squares total in each. Within these squares, arrange the numbers 1-4 so that no number appears twice in the same box. Ensure that each number appears once in each box.[4]

    • So, if a box already contains three numbers (1, 3, 4), then the last square in the box has to be 2.
  5. Solve the empty squares using the provided clues. Don't attempt to move or change the provided clues. Instead, use these numbers to solve for the puzzle's remaining squares.[5]

  6. Fill in every square to solve the puzzle. Every box, row, and column needs to be filled in completely. To ensure you have the correct solution, double-check that no numbers repeat themselves in a single box, row, or column.[6]

[Edit]Tips for Solving a 4x4 Sudoku

  1. Use a pencil. Using a pencil instead of a pen allows you to simply erase any mistakes and try again.[7]

  2. Use the process of elimination. To find a square's answer, determine that it's the only number that could possibly fit in that square. To do this, eliminate all of the other possible squares that a certain number could be placed in. Examine the number's position in other columns, rows, and boxes to shed light on which columns, rows, and boxes this number can't be included in again (without repeating itself).[8]

  3. Write possible answers in small letters in the squares' upper corners. This step is optional, but moving on after narrowing down a number's location to a few spaces can feel unsatisfying. So, feel free to leave yourself a note. If you determine that 4 has to fit in one of two squares in a given box, write the "4" in the top of both squares.[9]

    • This way, when you find out another number fits into one of the two boxes, you'll know that 4 has to solve for the remaining square.
    • Not only will this help you solve the puzzle faster, but it's likely to make the puzzle feel less frustrating, too.
  4. Work through the entire puzzle systematically. There are tons of ways to solve a Sudoku puzzle, but you might appreciate an organized strategy. To ensure you're always making progress and avoiding going in circles, work through the puzzle one number at a time. Investigate all of the provided clues for a given number before moving on to another. [10]

    • For instance, go through every clue provided for the number 2. If you find any surefire answers, fill them in.
    • Run through this process once or twice. When you've filled in a good number of squares, more obvious answers will start to crop up (like, for instance, the last remaining square in a box, column, or row).
  5. Fill in numbers only when you know they're correct. Avoid guessing, because this could definitely cause problems down the line. Instead, hold off on filling in an answer until you're entirely sure.[11]

  6. Keep working at it. At the beginning, kids may get frustrated when they feel like they've hit a dead end. Keep in mind that every puzzle has a solution, and there's always a clue that you haven't caught just yet. The challenge is what makes the puzzle so fun to solve! Keep your chin up, keep searching, and get creative. [12]
