Posted: 06 Jun 2018 03:48 PM PDT

NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine

Today, NASA's new administrator, Jim Bridenstine, spoke candidly with a group of reporters in Washington, DC about the direction of NASA, touching on everything from deep space rockets to climate change.

During the hour-long roundtable discussion, he maintained NASA's commitment to studying the Earth from space, as well as continuing over-budget and delayed projects such as the James Webb Space Telescope and the deep-space rocket called the Space Launch System. Bridenstine also promised that NASA would not end the International Space Station program unless the agency had a viable alternative in place.

Here are five of the most interesting topics discussed during the interview:

End of the International Space Station

Apple Maps embeds have come to web browsers in beta

Posted: 06 Jun 2018 02:25 PM PDT

You may now start to see Apple Maps embeds in websites around the internet, as Apple has opened up a web-based API for developers in beta, it announced today at WWDC.

In the past, Apple has embedded maps on some of its websites like iCloud.com's Find My iPhone page or the Apple Store site. But the company has kept the ability to embed Apple Maps on web browsers internal until now, unlike its rivals, Google Maps and Microsoft's Bing Maps.

Apple Maps website embeds will work pretty much the same way as they do on iOS, letting developers select a map area and allowing users to search for specific locations within the area and get directions between two points. The map embeds will also support touchscreen gestures like pinching to zoom, or...

Android P Beta 2 includes 157 new emoji and has gender-neutral options

Posted: 06 Jun 2018 01:46 PM PDT

Today, Google announced a new beta for its upcoming Android P release that shows the new emoji updates coming later this year, including new items like a skateboard and lobster, support for redheads, and a gender-neutral option for the family and couple emojis.

These emojis already existed in the Unicode Standard, and Google is now following the guideline stating, as Emojipedia says, that "if a gender isn't mentioned, then a gender-neutral or gender-inclusive display should be used." So, the default emoji for family and couple will be gender ambiguous, and in the sub-menu for each, specific combinations of gender can be selected.

This could be an indication that Google will move toward a gender-neutral option as the default for other...

17 million people have watched a surprisingly uplifting breakup on YouTube

Posted: 06 Jun 2018 01:32 PM PDT

YouTube's top trending content at the moment isn't an advertisement, music video, or movie trailer. It is not a viral challenge video, nor is it something about Fortnite. Instead, it's a shockingly raw breakup video featuring two of YouTube's biggest comedy vloggers, Liza Koshy and David Dobrik.

Liza Koshy, 22, is best known for going to stores and causing improvisational mischief, often featuring random items that anyone can buy. David Dobrik, 21, has also made a name for himself through funny vlogs, many of which feature his relationship with Koshy. Combined, the two have over 21 million subscribers, making them one of the most visible power couples on the platform. Except that the two broke up six months ago, according to a video...

Why a DNA data breach is much worse than a credit card leak

Posted: 06 Jun 2018 12:54 PM PDT

This week, DNA testing service MyHeritage revealed that hackers had breached 92 million of its accounts. Though the hackers only accessed encrypted emails and passwords — so they never reached the actual genetic data — there's no question that this type of hack will happen more frequently as consumer genetic testing becomes more and more popular. So why would hackers want DNA information specifically? And what are the implications of a big DNA breach?

One simple reason is that hackers might want to sell DNA data back for ransom, says Giovanni Vigna, a professor of computer science at UC Santa Barbara and co-founder of cybersecurity company Lastline. Hackers could threaten to revoke access or post the sensitive information online if not...

Uber is launching its bike-share company Jump in Europe

Posted: 06 Jun 2018 12:37 PM PDT

In the two months since Uber bought bike-share startup Jump, the company's bright red bikes have already rolled out across a few US cities — and now they're coming to Europe.

Onstage at today's NOAH Conference in Berlin, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced that the company would be expanding beyond its traditional taxi rides with plans to roll out electric bike rentals in the German capital by the end of the summer, with more European cities to come.

It's a move that raises eyebrows for a few reasons. European cities are already flooded with bicycles from electronic bike-sharing services like Obike, Limebike, and Ofo; Berlin alone has over 18,000 shared bikes from eight different companies. They might be a greener alternative to...

Spotify is trying to lure artists into licensing their music directly

Posted: 06 Jun 2018 12:20 PM PDT

Spotify is reportedly offering advances and appealing business terms to independent artists in hopes of convincing them to license their music directly with the streaming music app instead of going through a third-party distribution service. Billboard reports that some of the company's deals have promised artists and their management "several hundred thousand dollars as an advance fee for agreeing to license a certain number of tracks by their independent acts directly to Spotify."

"In some cases," Billboard says Spotify is offering a 50 percent cut of per-stream royalty rates. That's less than the percentage major labels earn, but artists end up with a significantly smaller portion of those label royalties, so Spotify's proposal could...

Valve says it will allow ‘everything’ on Steam as long as it isn’t illegal or ‘trolling’

Posted: 06 Jun 2018 12:13 PM PDT

After a few weeks of controversy — which included a pulled game about school shootings and confusion over the place of sexually explicit games on the platform — Valve has decided to change its policies on what games are allowed on Steam. Its solution? Almost anything goes.

"We ended up going back to one of the principles in the forefront of our minds when we started Steam, and more recently as we worked on Steam Direct to open up the Store to many more developers: Valve shouldn't be the ones deciding this," the company explained in a blog post today.

"If you're a player, we shouldn't be choosing for you what content you can or can't buy. If you're a developer, we shouldn't be choosing what...
