Arris made the first product to support the open Wi-Fi mesh networking standard Posted: 12 Aug 2018 10:43 AM PDT Earlier this year, an industry organization which oversees Wi-Fi standards known as The Wi-Fi Alliance, introduced a new standard called EasyMesh, which will set a common standard for mesh routers to work with ones manufactured by other mesh routers from other companies. Now, the first such device that will adhere to the standard has been announced. Last week, router manufacturer Arris announced that it would release the first EasyMesh-certified router, the VAP4641 Wireless Extender. The extender uses 802.11ac wave 2 technology, and will pair with other certified devices — once they become more widely available. Arris doesn't say when the device will be available for purchase. Up until this point, consumers were essentially locked into... |
Bubble is a hilarious sci-fi spin on modern hipster culture Posted: 12 Aug 2018 10:00 AM PDT There are a ton of podcasts out there, but finding the right one can be difficult. In our new column Pod Hunters, we cover what we've been listening to that we can't stop thinking about. Imagine life in Brooklyn, Portland, or any other fast-growing, hip metropolis, where people are obsessed with things like brunch, have a side hustle, or want to extoll the merits of Die Hard as a Christmas movie. Now imagine that city under a dome on an alien planet, and the threat from alien monsters. This is the world of Bubble, a science fiction comedy podcast from podcast studio Maximum Fun. Bubble just wrapped up its first, eight-episode season, and follows an unlikely group of friends who come together thanks to an Uber-like app for hunting... |
A new app from an Assassin’s Creed dev encourages you to stay in bed Posted: 12 Aug 2018 09:00 AM PDT For the duration of #SelfCare — not quite a video game, yet full of gamified tasks — you will stay in bed. Created by Tru Luv, a studio founded by former Assassin's Creed dev Brie Code and writer Eve Thomas, #SelfCare is a series of breathing or focus exercises. One activity has you piecing together words like "unfollow" or "overslept" by dragging letter blocks; another simply asks that you pet your virtual cat by rubbing the screen. The goal isn't to win or achieve a high score, but rather reflect on your own needs and take a beat; #SelfCare is a "digital companion" meant to help you do just that. Code, speaking to The Verge via email, reflects on her time as an AI programmer and her focus on the connections between characters in games.... |
This week’s best deals include Note 9 preorder bonuses and a discounted 3DS XL SNES edition Posted: 12 Aug 2018 08:00 AM PDT A lot happened this week. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 was unveiled, The Verge glimpsed into Magic Leap's vision of the future for augmented reality, and the Google Pixel 3 XL leaked rather extensively. B&H Photo is selling preorders of the Note 9 at $999, offering the same bonuses available to anyone who places an order before August 23rd: AKG noise-canceling headphones ($299 value) or 15,000... |
Intel’s 9th generation processors rumored to launch October 1st with 8 cores Posted: 12 Aug 2018 07:00 AM PDT Intel is rumored to be introducing its 9th generation processors in October. While Intel's 10nm Cannon Lake chips have been delayed until 2019, this year's refresh will be based on improvements to the existing 14nm process. Wccftech reports that Intel will introduce new Core i9, i7, and i5 chips on October 1st that will be branded as 9th generation processors. The mainstream flagship processor, Intel's Core i9-9900K, is expected to ship with 8 cores and 16 threads. Leaked documents show that this will be the first mainstream Core i9 desktop processor, and will include 16 MB of L3 cache and Intel's UHD 620 graphics chip. Even Intel's 9th gen Core i7 processor is expected to ship with 8 cores and 8 threads (up from the current 6 cores),... |
The key to a fresh phone case is a swappable charm Posted: 12 Aug 2018 06:00 AM PDT Phone Case of the Month is a monthly series in which we live with, and subsequently review, our time with a phone case. Phone cases are one of our only ways to express individuality with our smartphones, so what do our phone case choices say about us? It's been a while since I last posted a phone case review, and I'm sorry. But I'm thrilled to report that I've discovered an incredible phone case hack. You might remember my last review, which involved cherry pom-poms. Today's review is about all the things I can do with that one case because of its back-mounted metal loop. The case originally came with those cherries that were attached with a key ring. The key ring eventually broke, and the cherries fell off, so I ultimately was stuck... |
