Posted: 13 Sep 2018 05:51 PM PDT

SpaceX has signed its first customer to fly on the company's huge new rocket, the BFR, the company says. The passenger will fly on the monster ship around the Moon, though there are no details yet regarding when the trip will happen. SpaceX says it will announce who is flying — and why — on Monday, September 17th.

The BFR, or the Big Falcon Rocket, is the giant rocket that SpaceX is currently developing to send humans to the Moon and Mars. The BFR design, presentated by CEO Elon Musk last year, consists of a combined rocket and spaceship, called the BFS for Big Falcon Spaceship. The main rocket will have 31 main Raptor engines and be capable of sending up 150 tons to low Earth orbit, according to that presentation.

Posted: 13 Sep 2018 04:10 PM PDT

You can stop feeling guilty about abandoning your 3DS Animal Crossing town: Isabelle the Shih Tzu is coming to kick your ass. Today's Nintendo Direct revealed the addition of everyone's favorite mayoral assistant to the Smash Bros. Ultimate roster.

As you can imagine, Isabelle's repertoire of moves are cutesy — the pup uses things like fishing lines and pom pomps to fight her enemies. I'm sure it'll be infuriating to lose against her, just like it is annoying to fight against the adorable villager.

This terrifying graphic from The Weather Channel shows the power and danger of Hurricane Florence

Posted: 13 Sep 2018 03:46 PM PDT

A new video from The Weather Channel shows in real time the danger of flood waters already rising in parts of the Carolinas as Hurricane Florence starts battering the coast. The storm is moving slowly and is anticipated to bring deadly storm surges to the region as well as torrential rains. "That's a recipe for a flooding disaster," meteorologist Marshall Shepherd told The Verge in an interview on Monday.

The National Hurricane Center is predicting storm surges anywhere from two to more than 11 feet high. But it's hard to visualize what those numbers actually mean for someone near the water. The National Hurricane Center tried to make it clear with a cartoon graphic that shows rainbow colored water levels rising over the heads of a...

Nintendo took the wraps off a new title for its Switch console today: Luigi's Mansion 3. The third installment in the series about Mario's not-so-heroic brother vacuuming up poltergeists in a quest to find his brother is coming sometime next year. Nintendo showed off a very short series of gameplay snippets in the opening moment's of today's Nintendo Direct announcement.

The original Luigi's Mansion, which came out in 2001 for the GameCube, wasn't a super groundbreaking title, but it was the very first game in the Mario universe to star a playable Luigi since the enigmatic MS-DOS education title Mario is Missing from way back in 1993.

Nintendo developed a proper Luigi's Mansion sequel more than a decade later, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon,...

Apple’s new iPhones use eSIM technology, but only nine countries in the world support it

Posted: 13 Sep 2018 01:20 PM PDT

The new iPhone XS and XS Max will have dual SIM capabilities, with a special edition for the Chinese market that contains a SIM tray which holds two physical cards. For users outside China, however, the new iPhone devices will support eSIM. While there are many benefits to eSIM, the nascent technology hasn't seen wide adoption yet.

Only nine countries offer eSIM support right now: Austria, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, India, Spain, the UK, and the US. Sprint and smaller carriers in the US don't offer eSIM support, meaning that customers will need to switch over to T-Mobile, Verizon, or AT&T in order to enjoy that feature.

Boring Company gets approval to build a tunnel connecting a garage to a hyperloop

Posted: 13 Sep 2018 12:25 PM PDT

Elon Musk's Boring Company continues to gain validation from city governments. In June, the company was selected to build a multibillion-dollar rapid transit link between downtown Chicago to O'Hare International Airport, and just this week, it got approval from the Hawthorne City Council in California to start building a prototype garage that would transport cars to an underground hyperloop.

The garage will be built on a private residence near SpaceX's headquarters, which will be rented by the company. The Mercury News reports that, as part of the conditions of the approval, the test elevator will be closed to the public, and no cars will be able to move from the garage to the street in order to keep the project from...
