Hurricanes stalling like Florence over the Carolinas may get even more common

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 06:28 PM PDT

Hurricane Florence when it made landfall on Friday September 14th, 2018.

When Hurricane Florence struck the U.S. East Coast at 7:15AM ET this morning, it popped a squat near Wilmington, North Carolina. The hurricane — now downgraded to a tropical storm — is hovering over the area, unleashing torrential rainfall, and creeping towards the west at a glacial three miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. That means the rain will continue to pound the same waterlogged ground — which, combined with storm surge, is leading to deadly flooding. So far, at least two people have died, according to Vox.

"Look at how slow this system is," NHC director Ken Graham said in a Facebook Live briefing Friday morning. (When Graham talks about the storm's speed, he means the pace at which it's traveling, not...

Meet the pilots of Star Wars Resistance in a new featurette

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 02:34 PM PDT

Disney has released a second featurette introducing some of the characters in its upcoming animated show, Star Wars Resistance: the Aces, a team of pilots who protect the base. The show will follow the inhabitants of Colossus, a massive floating base located on an ocean planet. Back in August, we got a featurette that introduced Team Fireball, a group of racing pilots, including Kaz, (voiced by Christopher Sean), who's recruited into the Resistance as a spy.

This new featurette shows off another group of pilots and a bit more of the high-stakes racing that will take place in the show. First up, there's Torra Doza (Myrna Velasco), a young, bubbly and gifted pilot, who's friends with Kaz. There's also the cocky Hype Fazon (Donald Faison),...

Google’s prototype Chinese search engine reportedly links searches to phone numbers

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 01:55 PM PDT

Google is reportedly building a prototype system that would tie Chinese users' Google searches to their personal phone numbers, as part of a new search service that would comply with the Chinese government's censorship requirements. The Intercept writes that the "Dragonfly" Android app, a secret project revealed by a whistleblower last month, could be linked to a user's phone number — making it simple to track individual users' searches.

This tracking would be in addition to Dragonfly's blacklisting of terms like "human rights," "student protest," and "Nobel Prize," which might normally pull up news about Chinese activist and Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo. Sources have also told The Intercept that it's "essentially hardcoded" to replace...

Watch the last flight of the Delta II rocket as it puts a laser-pulsing satellite into orbit

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 01:15 PM PDT

A Delta II launching from Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Tomorrow morning, a nearly 30-year-old rocket will take its final ride to space. The Delta II, a vehicle manufactured by the United Launch Alliance that first launched in 1989, will fly one last time, sending up an Earth-observing satellite into orbit for NASA. If tomorrow's mission goes well, it will serve as the 100th successful flight of the Delta II in a row, while bringing an end to a rocket that has launched rovers to Mars and spacecraft to the asteroid belt.

On board this last flight is NASA's ICESat-2, a satellite that's tasked with measuring how the land and sea ice around Earth's poles change over time. It's a follow-up mission to the original ICESat spacecraft, which observed Earth's ice transformation from 2003 to 2009. Both...

With Predator in theaters, it’s the perfect time to revisit The Monster Squad

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 12:46 PM PDT

There are so many streaming options available these days, and so many conflicting recommendations, that it's hard to see through all the crap you could be watching. Each Friday, The Verge's Cut the Crap column simplifies the choice by sorting through the overwhelming multitude of movies and TV shows on subscription services, and recommending a single perfect thing to watch this weekend.

What to watch

The Monster Squad, a 1987 film that pays loving homage to the classic Universal Studios monsters, while altering their designs just enough to avoid infringing on any copyrights. Directed by Fred Dekker, who co-wrote the script with Shane Black, it landed with a thud as the 1987 summer movie season drew to a close, but it picked up a cult...

Reminder: don’t schedule your Emmys party for Sunday

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 11:35 AM PDT

Usually, the Emmy Awards ceremony — the television industry's equivalent of the Academy Awards — happens on Sunday night. But not this year. For 2018, the biggest night in television will begin on Monday night instead, so your viewing party probably shouldn't be on the weekend per usual, unless you're planning on hosting a sleepover.

The schedule may seem annoying, but there's a good reason for the shift: broadcaster NBC wants to avoid conflicts with Sunday Night Football, an event that has historically limited viewership numbers for the Emmys. Given that awards shows in general have seen declining viewership numbers over the past five years, NBC is making a common-sense decision to control one potential influencing factor. The last time...

Google remotely changed the settings on a bunch of phones running Android 9 Pie

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 11:02 AM PDT

Yesterday a mix of people who own Google Pixel phones and other devices running Android 9 Pie noticed that the software's Battery Saver feature had been switched on — seemingly all by itself. And oddly, this was happening when the phones were near a full charge, not when the battery was low. As reported by Android Police, initially it was assumed that this was some kind of minor bug in the latest version of Android, which was only released a few weeks ago. Some users thought they might've just enabled Battery Saver without realizing.

But it was actually Google at fault.

The company posted a message on Reddit last night acknowledging "an internal experiment to test battery saving features that was mistakenly rolled out to more users than...

US lawmakers say AI deepfakes ‘have the potential to disrupt every facet of our society’

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 10:17 AM PDT

US politicians are getting increasingly worried about deepfakes — a new type of AI-assisted video editing that creates realistic results with minimal effort. Yesterday, a trio of lawmakers sent a letter to the Director of National Intelligence, Dan Coats, asking him to assess the threat posed to national security by this new form of fakery.

The letter says "hyper-realistic digital forgeries" showing "convincing depictions of individuals doing or saying things they never did" could be used for blackmail and misinformation. "As deep fake technology becomes more advanced and more accessible, it could pose a threat to United States public discourse and national security," say the letter's signatories, House representatives Adam Schiff...

Google reveals Pixel 3 colors: mint, white, and black

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 10:05 AM PDT

We're already well familiar with what the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL look like in terms of design, and now we know what colors Google's next flagship smartphones will come in.

Droid Life noticed this Google-hosted, confetti-filled "coming soon" teaser website that shows an outline of a Pixel phone with the company's G logo at the bottom. Clicking on the logo rotates between three different colors: mint, white, and black. The green hue inside the white outline is almost certainly a reference to the colored buttons on the white and mint Pixels; the black phone shows gray instead of the green.

Last year's Pixel 2 came in white, black, and a muted "kinda blue." So Google isn't deviating from its three-color...

The Dragon Prince is influenced by Avatar: The Last Airbender in the best ways

Posted: 14 Sep 2018 10:54 AM PDT

It's been nearly 10 years since the finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender aired on television, and since then, no other show has quite scratched the same itch. Even though it was designed as a children's cartoon, Avatar's mix of complex world-building and charming, multifaceted characters has been nearly unparalleled. But Netflix might be about to change that.

The Dragon Prince, which launched on Netflix on Friday, September 14th, is an original series from Wonderstorm, a new TV company helmed by gaming veterans who have worked on large franchises such as League of Legends and Uncharted. Co-written by The Last Airbender head writer Aaron Ehasz, this computer-animated show has an undeniable Avatar influence: The Dragon Prince is divided...
