Instagram’s co-founders have reportedly resigned from Facebook Posted: 24 Sep 2018 07:21 PM PDT Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger resigned from the photo-sharing company today, and both plan to officially depart the company in the next few weeks, according to a report from The New York Times this evening. Neither executives gave a reason for why they wanted to leave the Facebook-owned company. Valued at many times the $1 billion that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg agreed to purchase it for and now counting more than 1 billion worldwide users, Instagram is arguably Facebook's most successful acquisition. Its growth since 2012 is largely a product of Systrom and Krieger's vision, the duos strategic use of Facebook resources, and the willingness to aggressively compete with Snapchat. Now, Systrom and Krieger's exit... |
Google CEO Sundar Pichai is headed to Washington this week to discuss censorship and China Posted: 24 Sep 2018 06:10 PM PDT Google CEO Sundar Pichai will be present at a private meeting with top Republican lawmakers this Friday to discuss the company's controversial plans to relaunch a search product in China and perceived liberal bias of search results, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Last month, President Donald Trump kicked off a largely unfounded controversy, based on a misleading Fox News report, over censorship of conservative viewpoints in Google Search. Republicans have since latched onto the theory as a way to increase pressure on Silicon Valley over its largely liberal workforce and what are perceived to be actions taken exclusively to punish high-profile conservatives. According to the WSJ, Attorney General Jeff Sessions plans... |
Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL leak yet again Posted: 24 Sep 2018 02:41 PM PDT Google's upcoming Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones may be among the most leaked devices in modern consumer electronics history. With just two weeks to go until the official October 9th press event, where both devices will be unveiled presumably alongside some other Google-made hardware products, we're getting yet another visual leak of the handsets, courtesy of WinFuture. This comes after a torrent of leaks revealing what the devices look like and what the specs are, in addition to a look at a test device out in the wild when it was left in the backseat of a cab. This new leak, which includes a bunch of renders of the front and back of the devices, doesn't tell us anything we don't already know or have been almost certain of for quite... |
A controversial YouTuber’s suicidal claims have fans questioning his motives Posted: 24 Sep 2018 02:03 PM PDT Content warning: the following story contains sensitive material regarding mental health, self-harm, and suicide. Two months after Yousef "FouseyTube" Erakat threw a disastrous concert in LA that ended in a bomb threat, the YouTube star says he's giving up his channel with 10 million subscribers. "It's not worth it," Erakat said in a video uploaded last week. While the confession seems heartfelt and genuine, Erakat's history of sensational dishonesty in pursuit of views has left fans wondering whether his talk of suicide is real or not. Erakat is a controversial YouTuber who is known for making prank videos and "social experiments," some of which he admits that he faked for views. In the last year, Erakat has become a source of ridicule... |
Slack buys Astro and shuts down its email app Posted: 24 Sep 2018 12:56 PM PDT Slack has purchased Astro, the maker of an email app with a built-in smart assistant that helped sort through your messages and elevate important items to your attention. It may seem curious for Slack, the giant chat app with the goal of killing email, to buy an email app — but the pairing makes a good deal of sense. Astro's focus was on business users, and it built out some smart integrations inside of Slack. With the two teams combined, Slack can use Astro's experience to build a native solution for dealing with emails right inside the chat app. There is some bad news, though: Slack is shutting down Astro's email app. The app will stop functioning on October 10th. That's unfortunate, given that good third-party email clients have... |
Bird’s electric scooters are getting more rugged to handle heavy use Posted: 24 Sep 2018 12:37 PM PDT A year ago, dockless electric scooters first appeared on the streets San Francisco and Santa Monica. The initial reaction was bewilderment, eventually giving over to annoyance and dismissal. The companies that were scattering these scooters everywhere, like Bird and Lime, seemed to epitomize tech-bro arrogance. Surely the fad would fade and the scooters would be shipped back overseas from whence they came, destined for some landfill in China. Twelve months later, the scooters are in over 100 cities across the globe, and by most accounts, immensely popular. Bird and Lime have each reported over 10 million rides since their launch. Lime is valued at $1 billion; Bird at $2 billion. Ride-hailing giants Uber and Lyft are now getting in on... |
Waze adds Apple CarPlay support just days after Google Maps Posted: 24 Sep 2018 12:33 PM PDT Waze, like its parent company's mapping product, now supports navigation through Apple CarPlay with a new update out today, via 9to5Mac. Last week, Google released an update to its iOS app to fully support CarPlay navigation, which arrived as part of iOS 12's third-party support feature. Waze said it was coming soon, and it looks like the company needed just a few extra days to get it into shape. Just like with Google Maps, you'll now be able to sync Waze directions from your iPhone to your in-car display. Unlike Google Maps, you can enjoy some of Waze's more visual elements on CarPlay. For instance, based on your preference, you can use daytime or night mode regardless of the time of day. You can also change the icon Waze uses for your... |
The co-founder of a prominent tween girl YouTube network has been arrested for molesting a minor Posted: 24 Sep 2018 12:02 PM PDT Content warning: the following story contains sensitive material regarding physical and verbal abuse. Ian Rylett, the 55-year-old British co-founder of the mega-popular YouTube empire SevenAwesomeKids, was arrested in Florida in August, BuzzFeed News reported today. All of the company's channels, however, are still up: SevenAwesomeKids, SevenSuperGirls, SevenPerfectAngels, SevenFabulousTeens, SevenCoolTweens, SevenFuntasticGirls, and SevenTwinklingTweens. It appears that none of the channels have posted a new video in the month since Rylett's arrest. Together, the channels have more than 17 million subscribers and have amassed billions of views; each features a rotating cast of more than 20 girls, all between eight and 18 years old.... |
Toyota reportedly ready to put Android Auto in its cars Posted: 24 Sep 2018 11:30 AM PDT Toyota may finally relent and allow Android Auto to work in its cars, according to Bloomberg. An official announcement reportedly could come as soon as next month. The giant Japanese carmaker was one of the last major automakers to announce CarPlay compatibility. After holding out for years, Toyota announced this past January that Apple's own in-car infotainment service would show up in its cars starting with the 2019 Avalon. However, the company has continued to eschew Android Auto, with security concerns being cited as one of the reasons for the delayed adoption. In the meantime, Toyota has spent the last few years building its in-car infotainment experience around the Ford-born SmartDeviceLink platform, which allows some iOS and... |
