Mark Cuban’s hoverboard company has gone up in smoke

Posted: 26 Sep 2018 03:45 PM PDT

More than one year after launching a Kickstarter for a stylish, high-end hoverboard called Moov, Mark Cuban-backed Radical Transport has disbanded, refunds have been issued to backers, and the product is indefinitely shelved.

The reason? "Patent issues," Cuban told The Verge in an email. "Everyone wanted to sue everyone. I just didn't think it was worth it." The billionaire CEO declined to specify who he meant by "everyone," but the fight over hoverboard patents is not new, and it revolves around just a few players.

Shane Chen — founder of a company called Inventist — is listed as the inventor on the patent associated with the most popular style of hoverboard. One of the key's to Chen's patent is...

Special counsel Robert Mueller is now investigating his MacBook

Posted: 26 Sep 2018 03:03 PM PDT

Robert Mueller surfaced from the Russia investigation this afternoon to ask for help — tech support, specifically. The special counsel and former FBI director was spotted in the Georgetown Apple store today, working with a Genius bar employee to get help with a MacBook Pro. The photo was taken by Meghan Pianta, who works in communications in DC; we initially caught it via Washington Examiner reporter Kelly Cohen.

In the photo, you can see a pained, confused look on the special counsel's face. What is he looking at? We tried calling the Apple store to find out, but were stymied by endless phone trees. An investigator who went on location on behalf of The Verge said there was no sighting of either Mueller or the employee seen helping him.

Amazon is opening a new store that only sells products with 4-star ratings and above

Posted: 26 Sep 2018 02:55 PM PDT

Look, nevermind that Amazon's reviews are getting less and less trustworthy; I still often find myself scanning a thing's barcode or just pulling up its Amazon listing when I'm at a store to get a sense of whether it's a decent buy. With its latest store, Amazon isn't leaving that question up in the air anymore. The first-ever Amazon 4-star opens in New York City's Soho neighborhood tomorrow. And as the name implies, everything on its shelves has earned at least a four-star review average from Amazon's customers.

The store will also have new and "trending" items and best-sellers regardless of review score. Of course you'll find a ton of Amazon hardware, but there's plenty of third-party stuff too covering "devices, consumer electronics,...

Facebook’s former head of Messenger calls WhatsApp co-founder a “new standard of low-class”

Posted: 26 Sep 2018 01:20 PM PDT

If the sudden resignation of Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger wasn't enough to make it a tense and taxing week at Facebook headquarters, a new Forbes interview with WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton isn't going to help matters much. In the interview, Acton was critical of Facebook's monetization strategy for the app he and Jan Koum sold to the company for $16 billion. He also seemed to voice a sense of self-guilt for ever being part of the deal that made him extremely wealthy, saying "I sold my users' privacy to a larger benefit. I made a choice and a compromise. And I live with that every day." Acton exited Facebook a year before his final batch of stock options vested, a decision that ultimately cost him north of $800...

Fortnite cross-play on PS4 ushers in a new era of the console wars

Posted: 26 Sep 2018 12:58 PM PDT

Console players everywhere are rejoicing with the news that after months of bullish denials, Sony capitulated and will soon allow PS4 players to link up with people on Xbox, Switch, and mobile platforms — at least for select third-party games. While the cross-play beta for Fortnite gets most of the spotlight here, it's worth remembering that this functionality has huge implications for how people purchase and think about consoles, potentially even eroding some of the distinctions we've built up over the years about existing platforms.

Console wars are all about differences, the things you can get on one platform that you can't get on another. In the last console generation, the PS3 had a more sophisticated cadre of exclusives, the Wii U...

Amazon’s entire Fire TV lineup is on sale right now

Posted: 26 Sep 2018 12:29 PM PDT

Your search for a good set-top box under $100 just got easier, as Amazon has discounted its Fire TV Cube to $79.99, down from its regular $119.99 price. Like the $69.99 Fire TV, which is currently $39.99 for Prime subscribers, the Cube can handle broadcasting 4K HDR content through a variety of apps. But as for what to expect after paying an admittedly small premium on Amazon's Fire TV Cube, its integrated far-field microphones let you issue voice commands without a remote (though a remote is included, should you find yourself out of their range.)

Alexa in the Fire TV Cube can control your entertainment center, simplifying tasks like setting the volume and inputting commands in your cable box. Think of it as a voice-activated mediator...

Kayaker blessed by a seal, slapped in the face with an octopus

Posted: 26 Sep 2018 12:09 PM PDT

A man kayaking off the coast of New Zealand's South Island was clobbered in the face with an airborne octopus unleashed by a seal, Yahoo7 News reports. But here's the best part: the entire inter-species aquatic slap fight was caught on camera, so you can watch it as many times as you need to get through the day.

The video shows the seal rearing up out of the water with the octopus clutched in its mouth, and then flinging it at kayaker Kyle Mulinder. Mulinder's Instagram bio says he's a GoPro content creator, and he told Yahoo7 News: "My face happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time." Fellow kayaker Taiyo Masuda, who also describes himself as part of the GoPro family, says in the video's description that he shot the scuffle on...

Dish’s AirTV Player can now record two OTA channels at once with new adapter

Posted: 26 Sep 2018 11:56 AM PDT

Last week, Amazon introduced the Fire TV Recast, a box with two TV tuners and a hard drive. When plugged into an antenna, the Recast can stream (and record) live over-the-air channels — usually ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and a slew of random stuff depending on your location — and lets you watch that content on your Fire TV, Echo Show, or your smartphone. It's a nerdy, niche device squarely aimed at cord cutters, and I can't wait to try it.

Dish has offered something somewhat similar to this (minus the built-in hard disk) for a while now. Two products, actually. The $119.99 AirTV is closest to the Recast; it's a dual-tuner box that can record two shows at once and seamlessly integrate OTA channels with the Sling TV subscription service. They...

Oculus teases Star Wars: Vader Immortal, a VR experience coming in 2019

Posted: 26 Sep 2018 11:35 AM PDT

Back in 2016, Industrial Light & Magic's xLab team announced that it was working with writer David S. Goyer to create a VR experience starring Darth Vader. And at this year's Oculus Connect conference, the company showed off the first trailer for the finished product, now a three-part series called Star Wars: Vader Immortal, the first episode of which is set to launch in 2019.

While neither Oculus nor ILM is offering too many details on what Vader Immortal will entail — we know it will take place some time prior to Episode IV — but it sounds like it'll offer players the chance to take up a lightsaber and go head to head with Star War's most iconic villain in VR.

Vader Immortal will by no means be the first VR Star Wars title, either....
