Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition is coming to Nintendo Switch, out now on PS4 and Xbox One Posted: 06 Sep 2018 08:08 PM PDT Final Fantasy XV's cut-down mobile version has been announced for release on the Nintendo Switch as Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD, marking the series' first appearance on the platform. It's also coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, despite both the existence of regular Final Fantasy XV and the difficulty of fitting either system in your pocket, and has in fact gone live on both stores already. The Switch version isn't available yet, however — it may have been planned for announcement on the Nintendo Direct broadcast that was scheduled for today but got postponed due to the powerful earthquake that hit Hokkaido, Japan this week. The game is priced at $29.99 on PS4 and Xbox, with a 40-percent launch sale bringing it down to... |
CDC investigates two more flights that landed with coughing passengers Posted: 06 Sep 2018 04:10 PM PDT Some of the passengers who fell sick on an Emirates flight that landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday probably had the flu or another common respiratory infection, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said today based on early test results. The patients were treated with the flu vaccine and antivirals, reported the CDC in a statement. But the event yesterday started the spread of a different kind of contagion: worry. Today, two more international flights were evaluated by public health officials because people on board were coughing and had sore throats. Both of today's flights were on American Airlines: one from Munich and another... |
Google’s Pixel 3 event will take place on October 9th Posted: 06 Sep 2018 02:28 PM PDT Google has sent out invites for an October 9th event that will almost certainly be the official announcement of the thoroughly leaked Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones. There's not much to go by from the invite in terms of clues — just a simple "I <3 NY" phrase, which subtly hints at the Pixel 3 with the numeral in the heart emojicon, but given the leaked devices already out there, Google probably doesn't need to do much more to promote the announcement. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are the third generation of the Google-branded Pixel line that was first introduced in 2016. In the past few weeks, hardware units of both devices have made their way into the world, giving us a very good idea of what to expect from the announcement. Both... |
Huawei caught cheating benchmark test for P20 Posted: 06 Sep 2018 02:14 PM PDT Huawei has been caught optimizing some of its top smartphones to over-perform on benchmark tests. On Tuesday, AnandTech discovered that Huawei's P20 had been programmed to maximize performance specifically when running 3DMark, a popular benchmarking app. Today, the company behind 3DMark followed up with a statement saying that it had confirmed the findings and would delist the P20, as well as three other Huawei phones with similar behavior, from its benchmark leaderboards. The delisted phones include the P20, P20 Pro, Nova 3, and Honor Play. Huawei admitted to this behavior in a statement given to Android Authority, saying that its phones are designed to adjust their performance based on the app that's running. |
Twitter permanently suspends Infowars and Alex Jones Posted: 06 Sep 2018 01:55 PM PDT Twitter just permanently suspended Infowars and Alex Jones, a full month after companies like Apple, Facebook, and YouTube removed the conspiracy theorist and his blog from their platforms. Twitter said that the Infowars creator had violated its "abusive behavior" rules. Twitter at last deemed Jones went too far after he tweeted a video of himself confronting a CNN reporter, calling him an equivalent of "the Hitler Youth" and using other disturbing imagery to disparage him. Over the past month, Twitter has hesitated with what to do about Jones. In contrast, on August 6th, Apple banned Jones' podcasts (although it kept the Infowars app in the App Store), YouTube deleted his channel, and F... |
Academy realizes it probably should have workshopped its Popular Oscar idea Posted: 06 Sep 2018 01:50 PM PDT Following widespread backlash to its introduction of a new "Outstanding Popular Film" category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that it will pull back on the decision to include the category in the 91st Academy Awards ceremony in 2019. It will be holding off from implementing it in the future, pending further input and examination. Citing "challenges for films that have already been released" and "a wide range of reactions" to last month's announcement, the Academy acknowledged in a press release that implementing a new award mere months before the 2019 nominations are announced in January was probably not the best plan. Its Board of Governors "continues to be actively engaged in discussions, and will... |
Best Buy’s sold out Nintendo Switch bundle is back Posted: 06 Sep 2018 01:16 PM PDT Nintendo has yet to offer a real discount on the Nintendo Switch, so if you're looking to snag one, now is as good a time as any short of waiting until the holiday season. Namely, Best Buy's popular bundle, which includes a 50 percent discount on your choice of one of the system's best games, is back after selling out in July. For $329.99, you can pick either the Switch's grey or neon blue / red color schemes and choose between The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. You'd most likely want to pick up one of those games with a Switch purchase anyway, so this bundle will save you about $30. Game bundles are still the few options out there if you're looking for a deal on the... |
You can now pause your YouTube TV membership for up to six months Posted: 06 Sep 2018 12:36 PM PDT YouTube now lets you pause your YouTube TV membership instead of outright canceling it, as spotted by Android Police. The new policy, outlined in YouTube TV's support documents, lets a subscription be on hiatus with access to YouTube TV through the end of the payment period. A YouTube TV membership can be paused from four weeks to six months, and if you want to reinstate membership, the date you start things up again becomes your new monthly billing date. Pausing memberships isn't a common option with subscription services, but could be handy in the event that you'd like to take a break without losing recordings that you've saved. If you'd like to pause your YouTube TV membership,... |
Watch the first trailer for Call of Duty’s Blackout battle royale game mode Posted: 06 Sep 2018 12:31 PM PDT Developer Treyarch has been tight-lipped about the new Call of Duty game's battle royale variant for months now, letting small details trickle out since its big May reveal. The mode is called Blackout, and it exists as a free element of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. It was confirmed ahead of E3 this year to involve land, air, and sea vehicles and the biggest map the franchise has ever delivered. Beyond that, we've haven't seen much, and the public has subsisted mostly on a recent Game Informer feature detailing some key details like player counts and a reveal of the overhead map image just yesterday. Today, however, publisher Activision and Treyarch have dropped the very first Blackout trailer. Plainly put, it's a bit of sensory overload,... |
