The Boring Company shows off a new way to operate its machines: an Xbox controller Posted: 09 Sep 2018 12:49 PM PDT Elon Musk's The Boring Company showed off a new method for operating one of its massive boring machines: an Xbox controller. The company posted a short video on Twitter showing off an operator controlling a section of the machine with the device. The company began its work in April 2017 by digging a trench at SpaceX's Hawthorne, CA headquarters and was given approval to extend that tunnel for two miles under the city later that summer. It also began projects under LA's Highway 405, and was given approval to dig under Washington DC, and Chicago. On Twitter, Musk noted that the video shows off one of the company's new machines.

Apple acquired a documentary and an animated film for its streaming service Posted: 09 Sep 2018 12:11 PM PDT Apple has made a pair of new acquisitions as it prepares for its forthcoming video streaming service: a documentary about a elephant matriarch that leads her herd to a new home, and an animated film set in Ireland, according to Deadline. Directed by filmmakers Victoria Stone and Mark Deeble and narrated by Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave), The Elephant Queen made its premiere this weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival. The story follows an elephant named Athena who leads her herd to a new watering hole during a drought, risking their youngest calves as they do so. Wolfwalkers, directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, follows a young woman and her father as they arrive in Ireland to hunt down the last pack of wolves in... |
CBS chief Les Moonves has resigned following new allegations of sexual misconduct Posted: 09 Sep 2018 11:39 AM PDT CBS CEO and chairman Les Moonves has stepped down from his post following a new report from Ronan Farrow in The New Yorker, which brought new allegations of sexual misconduct. CBS's board made the announcement on Sunday evening, following a report from CNN that broke word of his departure. CBS says that its board of directors and its parent company National Amusements announced that they reached a settlement this evening that would see Moonves step down immediately. CBS will also donate $20 million to organizations that support the #MeToo movement, the amount of which will be "deducted from any severance benefits that may be due Moonves following the Board's ongoing independent investigation." Moonves will not receive any payout at this... |
Watch SpaceX launch a communications satellite tonight Posted: 09 Sep 2018 11:00 AM PDT After more than a month away from spaceflight, SpaceX is back to launching rockets again with a new mission set for this evening from Florida. Late Sunday night, SpaceX plans to launch a communications satellite into orbit from its launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, within a four-hour launch window that begins at 11:28 PM ET. The company will also attempt to land the rocket's first stage on one of its drone ships in the Atlantic Ocean. Tonight's cargo is a Telstar 18 VANTAGE satellite jointly operated by Canadian telecommunications company Telesat and Hong Kong's APT Satellite Co., which will provide communications coverage over Asia. The satellite will be deployed around 32 minutes after the launch. Around 10... |
Dear Spider-Man, we need to talk about your backpack hoarding Posted: 09 Sep 2018 10:00 AM PDT Spider-Man, we need to talk about your backpack collectibles. There are simply far too many in your new PlayStation 4 adventure. Scattering random objects around the city to force players to explore an open world is nothing new. In fact, you actually handle the system well, clearly and openly telling players exactly where they can find each and every backpack, and inciting the exploration by rewarding players with fun suits and cool upgrades. Plus, there's fun lore contained in each bag. But I have to ask: why on earth do you, Peter Parker, have 55 backpacks? And how did you manage to lose them across the entire city for almost a decade? As the game exposits early on when introducing the bag scavenger hunt, you put an RFID tracker in... |
New leak suggests that Apple’s entry-level phone will be called the iPhone XC Posted: 09 Sep 2018 09:08 AM PDT Apple's 'Gather Round' event is coming up this week, in which we're expecting to see what the company has in store for its products this fall. Among the reveals we're expecting to see are three new iPhones: an updated version of the iPhone X, a larger version, and a cheaper, 6.1-inch LCD version, which a new leak suggests will be called the iPhone XC. As this week's event has come ever closer, we've seen reports that suggested that the successor to the iPhone X would be called the iPhone XS, while the larger iPhone X model will be called the unwieldy iPhone XS Max, A slide purported to be from a Chinese carrier's marketing presentation has been circulating on the Chinese social media site Weibo (via Macotakara and 9to5Mac), suggests... |
Ford’s big electric push will start with this Mustang-style crossover Posted: 09 Sep 2018 09:00 AM PDT This week, Ford showed off the first teaser image (seen above) of an all-electric performance SUV codenamed "Mach 1." The drawing comes almost nine months to the day after the company announced the Mach 1 at the Detroit Auto Show, alongside the news that it was upping its investment into electric vehicle technology to $11 billion. And just like any other official teaser image issued by a big company, we only see what Ford wants us to see, which is that this car is clearly styled like a Mustang, at least to a certain degree. So while this new car is all about what's next for Ford, the company is also leaning on a product with a proven heritage. In other words, Ford is leveraging a little nostalgia as it points its customers toward the... |
Inside Jaws is a Steven Spielberg biopic in podcast form Posted: 09 Sep 2018 08:00 AM PDT There are a ton of podcasts out there, but finding the right one can be difficult. In our column Pod Hunters, we cover what we've been listening to that we can't stop thinking about. Steven Spielberg's 1975 film Jaws is a cinematic classic, a film that set the mold for the modern blockbuster. This summer, Wondery debuted a new podcast from Mark Ramsey, the podcaster who was responsible for two earlier series, Inside Psycho and Inside the Exorcist. Inside Jaws opens with an infamous incident that occurred in July 1916: 25-year old Charles Epting Vansant takes a swim at in New Jersey with his dog, and became the first victim of a series of shark attacks that summer in the area. It was an incident that cemented the image of a killer shark... |
This beautiful map shows everything that powers an Amazon Echo, from data mines to lakes of lithium Posted: 09 Sep 2018 07:00 AM PDT That the modern world is a complex place will not have escaped your notice. We are all dimly, unsettlingly aware that our lives are enmeshed in systems we can't fully comprehend. The last meal you ate probably contained produce grown in another country that was harvested, processed, packaged, shipped, then sold to you. The phone in your hand is the end-product of an even more convoluted chain; one that relies on human labor from mines in Africa, assembly lines in China, and standing desks in San Francisco. Explaining how these systems connect and the effect they have on the world is not an easy task. But it's what professors Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler have attempted to do in a new artwork and essay, unveiled last Friday at the... |
Instagram adds emoji shortcuts for quicker comments Posted: 09 Sep 2018 06:00 AM PDT Instagram has added personalized emoji shortcuts to its app, placing your most used emoji above your keyboard when you begin to comment on a post. The new feature was widely rolled out on Thursday, but it has been in public testing since May on both Android and iOS.
The new emoji bar won't show up in other areas that the keyboard is used, like responding to a story or captioning your own posts. But given the huge number of people that comment with emoji, this should help cut down on the time it takes to post a comment. The new personalized emoji shortcuts are now available in the latest Instagram... |
