Uber’s first electric scooters arrive in Santa Monica

Posted: 02 Oct 2018 09:00 PM PDT

Uber's first electric scooters are finally here. The dockless devices arrived earlier this week in Santa Monica, California, a month after the city gave Uber and four other companies the green light to operate up to 250 shared scooters each for the next 18 months.

The ride-hail company is playing catch-up in a market that's already flush with billion-dollar startups. Scooters first arrived unannounced last year in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Santa Monica. Since then, they've spread to scores of cities across the US and have begun appearing in Europe and the Middle East as well.

But rather than let them spread uninhibited, cities moved quickly to crack down on the scooters by issuing cease and desist letters or simply ordering them...

Ricin is a popular choice for attempting to poison politicians

People in protective gear screening mail at a Pentagon mail facility.

Two suspicious packages were discovered at a Pentagon mail facility Monday, the Associated Press reports. Then, this evening, the Secret Service announced that another envelope addressed to President Donald Trump was intercepted before it got inside the White House. There's no word yet about what might have been tainting the president's mail — but an unnamed federal official said that early tests detected ricin in the Pentagon packages, NBC Washington reports.

It might not be ricin — after all, it takes a day or two for the FBI to fully run its tests. But ricin is an oddly popular choice for attempting to poison presidents. A man from Mississippi and a woman from Texas, for example, were sentenced to prison for mailing ricin-filled...

Venom is a bizarre and baffling mess

Posted: 02 Oct 2018 07:00 PM PDT

The benefit of adapting any pre-existing intellectual property for the silver screen is that studios always know an audience is waiting. Whether the source material is a book, a video game, or even a line of toys, the logic is straightforward: if somebody liked a story in its original medium, they'll probably be curious enough about the movie version to buy a ticket. That's particularly true for comic books, where decades of readers' emotional investment can help serve as a filmmaking shortcut. Screenwriters just need to bake a reference to a beloved storyline into their script or add a post-credits scene with a fan-favorite villain, and more often than not, people who love the original property will respond passionately to the...

Razer’s new gaming router offers more reliable Wi-Fi and mesh networking

Posted: 02 Oct 2018 06:00 PM PDT

Razer is entering the router market with a new product it's calling Sila. Unlike most standard gaming routers on the market today, Razer says its model specializes in fast and reliable Wi-Fi. It also features mesh networking capabilities, for those who may not have an easy way to directly access their router via Ethernet.

That could be quite appealing to console gamers who keep their devices in living rooms or bedrooms and away from the main router. It's also, as Razer points out in its press materials, a benefit for mobile gamers who are increasingly playing sophisticated and competitive titles like Epic's Fortnite or Tencent's Honor of Kings on phones and tablets.

Tim Cook says Apple didn’t coordinate Alex Jones ban with other tech companies

Posted: 02 Oct 2018 05:35 PM PDT

Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed a bit more of the behind-the-scenes decision-making that resulted in conspiracy theorist and alt-right figure Alex Jones' widespread tech platform ban last month in an interview on HBO's Vice News Tonight this evening. Notably, Cook said that the decision to remove podcasts operated by Jones and his Infowars network from the official Podcasts iOS app, and later to remove the main Infowars app from the App Store, was not part of a coordinated attempt by multiple Silicon Valley companies to de-platform Jones and deny him a voice.

"We don't take a political stand. We're not leaning one way or the other. You can tell that from the stuff on the App Store and in podcasts, etc. You'll see everything from very...

A first look at the Surface Studio 2

Posted: 02 Oct 2018 05:20 PM PDT

Microsoft's second generation of the Surface Studio has been officially unveiled today. It looks very similar on the outside, with a 28-inch display at 3:2 aspect ratio and the classic Studio hinge that lets this giant all-in-one PC convert into a nearly flat drawing mode. I got a chance to get an early look at the Surface Studio 2 at Microsoft's press event in New York City today, and it's good to see Microsoft has largely focused on the internals with this refresh.

The outside looks and feels identical to the same device that shipped two years ago. Microsoft has upgraded the display to be 38 percent brighter and have 22 percent more contrast, but it's not immediately noticeable. The Surface Studio display was always stunning, and this...

First listen with Microsoft’s new Surface Headphones

Posted: 02 Oct 2018 03:45 PM PDT

Alongside three new Surface computers, Microsoft has also just announced another wearable device, the new Surface Headphones. The $349 Headphones are wireless, noise cancelling over-ear headphones with built-in Cortana access and some other unique design tricks. They'll be shipping later this year.

At first glance, the Surface headphones look rather similar to B&O Play's line of minimally designed cans, with an all grey finish and metal yokes. They have 40mm drivers, a claimed 15 hours of battery life, and the ability to automatically pause music when you take them off your head. Like many other wireless headphones, there are also touch controls on the right earcup for pausing music, skipping tracks, and answering calls.

How to preorder Microsoft’s new Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, and Surface Studio 2

Posted: 02 Oct 2018 03:44 PM PDT

Microsoft debuted its new line of Surface products at an event in New York today and most are available to pre-order now. The Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, and Surface Studio 2 all have faster processors and other improvements compared to their predecessors — and the portables now come in a sleek matte black finish. Microsoft also debuted an entirely new product today: the $350 noise-canceling Surface Headphones. (Sadly, there's no black option for those.) Here's how to pre-order everything.

Surface Pro 6

Microsoft's newest laptop/tablet hybrid will be available on October 16th but can be pre-ordered now. The Surface Pro 6 will start at $899 for the platinum colored version with an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of...

Bot makers loved The Last Jedi discourse so much they decided to politically influence it

Posted: 02 Oct 2018 03:43 PM PDT

When it arrived in theaters last year, writer-director Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi was greeted with an immediate backlash from a specific corner of its audience. As Vox's Todd VanDerWerff pointed out in December, the criticism seemed to come from a few different angles: some felt the film was too progressive, that it was too jokey, that it was not interested in the elaborate universe of fan theories that has accreted since the original trilogy's release, or that the characters' journeys weren't exactly to their liking.

None of these lines of attack are new or really surprising, especially for a beloved, 40-year-old series that many feel has defined their experience with science fiction and fan culture in general. What's new...

First look at Microsoft’s new matte black Surface Laptop 2

Posted: 02 Oct 2018 02:56 PM PDT

Microsoft has just announced the first refresh of its Surface Laptop since it was originally launched and along with all new processing components, it now comes in a matte black finish. The new Surface Laptop 2 starts at $999 and is available to order starting today, with shipments expected later this month.

The matte black finish on the Surface Laptop 2 is rather striking — it's deep, dark, and well saturated, giving the machine a stealthy finish. That is until you touch it, where like many other aluminum laptops with black finishes, it collects fingerprints with ease. Aside from the new finish, Microsoft says the keyboard is redesigned to be quieter and easier to type on, and in the brief time I spent with the machine, I found its...
