Faraday Future lays off some employees without severance while it seeks new funding Posted: 25 Oct 2018 04:29 PM PDT Faraday Future has received a small lifeline after announcing drastic measures earlier this week to keep the company afloat during a fight with its main investor. The electric car startup was given permission by the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre to seek up to $500 million in new funding from investors outside the existing $2 billion deal with China's Evergrande Group. Evergrande gets first right of refusal for any potential investors who step up, according to a filing with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Meanwhile, the 20 percent cut to salary and wages initiated earlier this week remains in place, and layoffs have already started, according to multiple people inside and close to the company. Some people have even been let go... |
It will take more than a hurricane to shake Florida’s red tide Posted: 25 Oct 2018 04:00 PM PDT Even a hurricane isn't powerful enough to dislodge a toxic algal bloom from Florida's shores. When Hurricane Michael pummeled the Florida panhandle last week, scientists wondered whether the storm would finally shake loose the red tide clinging to the state's coastline. The harmful algal bloom has been killing off fish and releasing plumes of neurotoxins for months — and even after enduring surging seas and winds of up to 155 miles per hour, it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Before Michael hit, experts speculated the bloom could play out in a few different ways: the storm could break up the bloom, make it worse, or a combination of both. Now, with Florida recovering from Hurricane Michael and the dregs of Hurricane Willa on... |
The White House demands answers about 5G in new memorandum Posted: 25 Oct 2018 03:32 PM PDT The White House issued a memorandum today asking for a strategy around 5G deployment. The memorandum asks the relevant authorities to submit a report on the "status of existing efforts" to work on the technology. Executive branch departments would need to inform the White House within 180 days about their "future spectrum requirements." The Office of Science and Technology Policy should report about how emerging tech, such as smart home gadgets, could affect demand for spectrum and how the government should allocate research and development spending to improve 5G efforts. Within 270 days, these branches and agencies would have to deliver a "long-term National Spectrum... |
Anker’s minuscule 27W USB-C brick looks like the charging future we’ve been promised Posted: 25 Oct 2018 03:03 PM PDT Anker has been a leader when it comes to cheap and reliable USB-C cables and power bricks for years, but at its press event in New York, the company may have just changed the game with the newly announced Powerport Atom PD 1 power brick. It's a 27W USB-C PD charger that's the size of the junky 5W plug that Apple gives you for free with your iPhone. Anker says that the difference with the Atom series of chargers is the use of Gallium Nitride (GaN) components over silicon, which the company says allowed for increased efficiency and the dramatically smaller size. The company also says the Atom PD 1 will be the first in a line of Atom chargers, with a 60W, two USB-C port PowerPort Atom PD 2 charger and a 100W four port (two USB-C and two USB... |
Anker announces upgraded Nebula Capsule II mini projector, now with USB-C and 720p resolution Posted: 25 Oct 2018 03:02 PM PDT Anker hosted a hardware event in New York City today, and wrapped into other announcements was news of an updated mini projector as well as the release date for one of the company's Google Assistant-equipped smart speakers. The company plans to launch its Nebula Capsule II projector on Kickstarter tomorrow with the goal of shipping it by March 2019. This second model in the Nebula Capsule line still runs Android TV, but it now features a USB-C charging port, a higher-resolution image at 720p, a brighter image at 200 lumens, a more powerful 8W speaker, and the inclusion of Google Assistant. When I reviewed the original Nebula Capsule for The Verge, my biggest gripe was that it relied on Micro USB, so I greatly appreciate the company... |
Instagram deletes Milo Yiannopoulos bomb post after struggling to enforce its own guidelines Posted: 25 Oct 2018 03:01 PM PDT Right-wing figure and Gamergate instigator Milo Yiannopoulos has repeatedly advocated for violence against journalists on social media. But users who report this type of content often hear back that it doesn't violate the platform's rules — at least until sufficient media attention and pressure is brought to bear. Today the cycle repeated, as Instagram initially claimed that a Yiannopoulos post lamenting the lack of journalist deaths attributable to a recent series of pipe bombs was acceptable content on the platform. Instagram then doubled back and removed the post. As a chorus of MAGA supporters increased its claims that the recent mail bombs sent to George Soros, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Eric Holder, John Brennan,... |
Google adds a ‘.new’ shortcut for making G Suite files Posted: 25 Oct 2018 02:58 PM PDT Google has just introduced a little time-saving trick for those who use G Suite apps. You can now instantly create things like a Google Doc or Sheet by using a keyword plus domain .new right in your browser address bar. Before, you had to navigate to the app you want to use and click on "new" to begin a fresh project. This new method lets you skip a couple steps, and works with any sort of document that is under the G Suite umbrella. Docs can be created with domains doc.new, docs.new or document.new; Sheets with sheet.new, sheets.new, or spreadsheet.new; Slides with slide.new, slides.new, deck.new, or presentation.new; Forms with form.new or forms.new; and Sites with site.new, sites.new, or website.new. These shortcuts work across any... |
Amazon is doing well in North America but still struggles overseas Posted: 25 Oct 2018 02:01 PM PDT Today, Amazon reported earnings for the third quarter of 2018, showing that its North American business remains solid, boosted by Echo device sales and cloud services. At the same time, it's still minimizing its losses in international markets. In North America, Amazon pulled in $34.3 billion, which is a 35 percent improvement from last year. Amazon Web Services continued to bolster numbers, rising 46 percent in sales. International sales trail behind and Amazon is still losing money in the category. Its losses this quarter however were only $385 million, compared to $936 million year over year. That's the narrative we're seeing as Amazon trucks along past the $1 trillion valuation number. Although the company doesn't provide a breakdown... |
Snapchat needs to fully roll out its new Android app to save itself Posted: 25 Oct 2018 01:50 PM PDT Snapchat is losing Android users rapidly, as the company continues to delay a full rollout of its long-coming updated app. In its earnings report today, the company announced that its daily active user numbers dropped from last quarter by 2 million, which CEO Evan Spiegel mainly attributes to lost Android users. It's down to 186 million from 188 million users last quarter, but it's still up from this time last year, at which point it was at 178 million. The company has always prioritized its iOS users, and only last year did it begin trying to rethink and optimize the app for Android. Spiegel says in prepared remarks that the forthcoming new app is "lightweight, modular, and... |
Alphabet’s ad business is booming, but Google controversies continue to pile up Posted: 25 Oct 2018 01:38 PM PDT As expected, Alphabet's core ad business continues to grow at a remarkable pace, with the company's third quarter earnings announcement coming in well over Wall Street analysts' expectations on profit, although slightly under sales estimates for the quarter. The company posted revenue of $33.7 billion for the quarter, up 21 percent year over year, with a profit of $9.2 billion, or earnings per share of $13.02. Much of this growth comes from its Google subsidiary's ad business — ad revenue accounted for 86 percent of all revenue this past quarter. But Google continues to invest heavily in its cloud division to compete with Amazon's AWS division and Microsoft's Azure. It also continues to invest in hardware through its Pixel phones,... |
