The next big Star Wars book will follow a squadron of rebel pilots hunting down the Empire Posted: 05 Oct 2018 04:31 PM PDT During the Star Wars publishing panel earlier today at New York Comic Con, Random House Books announced that Alexander Freed will be writing a new novel called Alphabet Squadron, which will focus on "rebel pilots hunting down Imperials." To long-time Star Wars readers, it sounds very much like the Expanded Universe's X-Wing series. Freed isn't a stranger to the Star Wars franchise. He wrote Battlefront: Twilight Company and the novelization for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, as well as a handful of short stories for Star Wars Insider magazine and several comics. There isn't much more known beyond Random House's brief description, aside from the fact that it's set after Return of the Jedi. A temporary cover shows off the classic... |
Tesla adds Atari games and dash camera feature in new software update Posted: 05 Oct 2018 03:09 PM PDT Tesla has officially released the ninth version of its in-car software, which includes a new dash cam feature, Atari games (playable when parked), improved navigation, and more in what the company calls its "most substantial update yet." Software version 9.0, as it's called, is available to download on all Tesla cars now. Owners just have to connect their cars to a Wi-Fi hotspot to begin the update. There are no advances for Tesla's driver assistance system, Autopilot, though. CEO Elon Musk promised earlier this year that Tesla would start unlocking more of the features that he says will eventually make the company's cars completely able to drive themselves. But the first of those features, called Navigate, is now listed as "coming... |
New Google Home Hub smart display could arrive as early as October 22nd Posted: 05 Oct 2018 02:18 PM PDT Last month, newly filed FCC documents suggested that Google may release an "Interactive Video Streaming Device" called the Home Hub. Now, a photo tweeted by YouTuber Jon Prosser appears to confirm the product with additional details about its capabilities. The photo gives some broad details about what the Home Hub can do. Its basic functions are similar to a Google Home speaker: you can voice-control compatible smart home components, like lights, security cameras, TVs, and speakers. It will also have Voice Match for recognizing different people's voice commands to bring up their calendars, reminders, commute, and more on the home screen. Unlike a smart speaker, the Home Hub is supposed to deliver "visual, immersive answers" from Google... |
In You Might Be the Killer, a Twitter thread expands into a horror-comedy — barely Posted: 05 Oct 2018 12:52 PM PDT Welcome to Cheat Sheet, our brief breakdown-style reviews of festival films, VR previews, and other special event releases. This review comes from Austin's Fantastic Fest. Feature films have been inspired by an awful lot of random things — theme park rides, online fetish ads, plotless rhythm video games — but the horror-comedy You Might Be the Killer is likely the first film to directly adapt a viral Twitter thread. Back in July 2017, authors Chuck Wendig and Sam Sykes riffed out an entire narrative on Twitter where Sykes claimed he was a camp counselor dealing with a "crazed serial killer," Wendig suggested that Sykes might be the killer himself, and the two writers walked through the story together. It was a winking, knowing thread,... |

Bird scooters roll into Mexico City and Brazil Posted: 05 Oct 2018 12:24 PM PDT Bird's dockless, electric scooters are now available in Latin America. The startup announced Friday that its rolling into Mexico City, and will soon be launching in Brazil. To start out, Bird will drop 100 scooters in Mexico City's La Condesa, Nápoles, Polanco, and Reforma neighborhoods. But the scooters won't be geofenced to those neighborhoods. Like it does in its other markets, Bird's staff of independent contractors will collect all scooters each evening for charging and maintenance. Bird hasn't received explicit permission from Mexico City's local government to operate scooters, but the city is home to other dockless scooter companies like Grin. "Bird operates in accordance with all of the laws and regulations on... |

A storm is coming in American Gods’ new season 2 trailer Posted: 05 Oct 2018 10:57 AM PDT Today at New York Comic Con, Starz hosted a panel for the upcoming second season of its fantasy show American Gods, and showed off our first look at what's to come in the show when it returns in 2019. The trailer shows off the continuing story of Gaiman's novel, which looks to be picking up even more fantastic elements — and gods, old and new —as Shadow (Ricky Whittle) and Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) continue their road trip across America. Also teased is the pending clash between the old gods of mankind's past and the new gods, like Media and Technology, of the future. But mostly, American Gods seems content to just show off all the returning players from season one, which will have to suffice to tide fans over for now. Some additional... |
Jarvish’s smart motorcycle helmets will offer Alexa and Siri support and an AR display Posted: 05 Oct 2018 10:39 AM PDT Smart helmets seem like one of those great ideas that just haven't really taken off yet, but that doesn't mean that companies aren't still trying. Jarvish — the latest to try to claim the crown — has an interesting take on the idea with its upcoming Jarvish X and Jarvish X-AR motorcycle helmets (via Engadget). The Jarvish X is the more basic of the two models. It offers integrated microphones and speakers for Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa support so wearers have access things like directions, weather updates, and control music through voice control. There's also a 2K, front-facing camera built into the helmet so you can record your ride. It's set to cost $799 when it hits Kickstarter in January. The X-AR goes a step... |
